Russell and Ericka Thomas of Soldotna announce the birth of their daughter, Lia Marie Thomas, at 3:24 a.m. June 14, 2013, at Woman’s Way Midwifery in Soldotna. She weighed 9 pounds, 15 ounces and measured 22 1/2 inches. She joins siblings Ian and Mya. Her grandparents are Ozzie and Marcie Thomas, Patty Thomas, David Hunt and Bonnie Martinson.

Derrick and Becky Stanton of Nikiski announce the birth of their daughter, Hannah Elaine Stanton, at 9:43 p.m. on June 13, 2013 at Women’s Way Midwifery in Soldotna. She weighed 6 pounds, 10 ounces. She joins siblings Hope, Adonijah, Eden and Elisha.

Hally Gillis of Sterling has been named to the Spring Semester Dean’s List at Bemidji State University in Bemidji, Minn. Bemidji State students carrying 12 or more semester hours during any one term and earning at least 3.25 (B-plus) grade point average are listed on the Dean’s List.

Mary Elizabeth Williamson of Kasilof recently graduated from Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kan. Williamson was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing.

Samantha Rae Johnson graduated from University of Alaska Fairbanks on May 12. Samantha earned her M.Ed., Counseling, with her Secondary B.S. from UAF in 2011 in psychology and criminal justice. Samantha is a 2006 Kenai Central High School graduate and the daughter of Clyde (Shorty) and Gwen Johnson.

Not so Golden Globes

Meryl Streep has played many roles in her long career and holds the record for the most Academy Award nominations of any actor. Among her portrayals was British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. At the Golden Globe Awards Sunday night, Streep behaved as if she actually had been elected to high office, entitling her to mount a high horse.

What is the Sesquicentennial?

Sesquicentennial is a jawbreaker word, too big even for Scrabble, but it does have a noble ring to it. Its meaning is far simpler: 150th anniversary. Any anniversary worth such a big name also is worth a good party, and this time the party is for Alaska: 2017 marks 150 years since the United States purchased this Great Land from Russia. Read more
