Ernst wins P.E.O. scholarship

The prestigious P.E.O. STAR Scholarship for the 2013-2014 academic year was presented to Annaleah Ernst, a Nikiski Middle-High School graduate by Nancy Cranston and Bonnie West, P.E.O. Chapter M representatives.

Annaleah is the daughter of Robert and Gretchen Ernst. She will attend Harvard University. The P.E.O. STAR Scholarship is $2,500 based on excellence in leadership, extracurricular activities, community service, academics and potential for future success.

Not so Golden Globes

Meryl Streep has played many roles in her long career and holds the record for the most Academy Award nominations of any actor. Among her portrayals was British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. At the Golden Globe Awards Sunday night, Streep behaved as if she actually had been elected to high office, entitling her to mount a high horse.

Sesquicentennial is a jawbreaker word, too big even for Scrabble, but it does have a noble ring to it. Its meaning is far simpler: 150th anniversary.
