The Sterling Community Center hosted a Triathlon on August 17! It was a fun success! The participants had to be in teams of two as the course was made for partners. It included a 1.7-mile run, a 1/2-mile canoe on the Moose River and a 5.6-mile bike! We were excited to have a Iditarod champion Mitch Seavey and his oldest son on a team. We will be sponsoring this fun event next year as well. The first place team was the “Stick People” (Conway and Tekla Seavey) finishing the course at 37 minutes, 19 seconds. The second place team was “The cousins” (Matthew Daugherty & Caleb Streiff) finishing it in 39 minutes, 4 seconds. Finishing in third place were team “We-No-Nah” (Briana and Ryan Brumley) right on the heels of team cousins with a total time of 39 minutes, 17 seconds!

Runners up included Team “Detrow-Mental,” Team “Wrecking Crew,” “Granny’s Rock,” Team “Rudstrom,” Team “Overdogs.” And the winning team that added a fourth event, swimming was team “Putting Pierces” when they flipped their canoe!

Sesquicentennial is a jawbreaker word, too big even for Scrabble, but it does have a noble ring to it. Its meaning is far simpler: 150th anniversary. Any anniversary worth such a big name also is worth a good party, and this time the party is for Alaska: 2017 marks 150 years since the United States purchased this Great Land from Russia. Read more
