Catholic Churches plan open houses


Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Soldotna will an open house to answer questions about the inquiry process that leads to reception into the Catholic Church. This process is called the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults or RCIA. On Sept. 11 at 6:30 p.m. there will be a gathering to explain the process and answer questions you may have about the Church. Also Our Lady of the Angels in Kenai will hold an open house on Sept. 9 at 5:30 p.m. If you have questions, please call Kevin at 283-4555.

Sterling church hosts AWANA program

Sterling Baptist Church is starting an AWANA program this year, every Wednesday starting Sept. 4 from 6-8 p.m. The club will meet at Sterling Baptist Church. Children 3 years old through sixth grade are welcome. Call Sterling Baptist for more information at 262-4711.

Food Bank to benefit from Thrivent Financial sponsorship of annual Soup Supper & Auction

Members from Christ Lutheran, Funny River Lutheran and Star of the North Lutheran Chapters of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans are co-hosting a fundraiser to help Kenai Peninsula Food Bank raise funds to feed hungry people. The Soup Supper & Auction will be Sept. 7 at 5:30 p.m. at Kenai Central High School.

During the fundraiser, each ticket holder enjoys delicious soup and receives a hand thrown bowl by local potters. The keepsake bowls are donated by members of the Kenai Potters’ Guild and local artists. The soups are complemented with breads and desserts including a chocolate fountain. The fundraiser features a silent and live auction including a Norman Lowell print framed by Frames and Things, gift certificates for services and many other items.

Catholic Churches to hold RCIA classes for Inquirers

Classes for anyone interested in the Catholic Church will be held each Wednesday evening at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Soldotna starting Sept. 25. The classes will be held in O’Neill Hall, 238 W. Redoubt Avenue at 6:30 p.m. each Wednesday of the school year. During the year those attending will learn about the teachings of the Church based on the teachings of Jesus Christ to His disciples. Kenai United Methodist Church provides food pantry

The Kenai United Methodist Church provides a food pantry for those in need every Monday from noon to 3:00 p.m. The Methodist Church is located on the Kenai Spur Highway next to the Boys and Girls Club. The entrance to the Food Pantry is through the side door. The Pantry closes for holidays. For more information contact the church office at 283-7868 or email

Clothes 4 U program resumes

First Baptist Church Soldotna, located at 159 S. Binkley Street, is re-opening its Clothes 4 U program. Beginning Aug. 24, it will be open on the second and fourth Saturday of each month from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. All clothing and shoes are free to the public.

Food Pantry open at Soldotna church

The Soldotna United Methodist Church, at 158 South Binkley St., offers a Food Pantry for residents in the community who are experiencing food shortages. The Food Pantry is open every Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for anyone in the area who may need extra help.

To support those efforts, the church is accepting non-perishable food donations, which may be dropped off at the church any Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. or Sunday from 9 a.m. to noon. The Way Cafe serving dinner

The Way Cafe, is located at the Merit Inn, 260 South Willow St. in Kenai, will continue serving free meals to youth 18 and younger from 5:30-8 p.m. Monday to Friday. Meals for adults are $3.

Clothes Quarters open weekly

Clothes Quarters at Our Lady of the Angels Church is open every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the first Saturday of every month from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
