Kenai Senior Center activities

What’s happening at the Kenai Senior Center for the month of September 2013 (all activities are held at the Kenai Senior Center unless otherwise stated):

■ September 4th-5th — Road Trip to Talkeetna & Train Ride to Hurricane Gulch (sold out)

■ September 13th — KCHS Football, leaving KSC at 5:30 p.m. returning anytime after halftime ($3)

■ September 16th — Caregiver’s Class “Stopping a Stroke: Limiting the Damage Done” at 1 p.m.

■ September 17th — No-Host Dinner at PJ’s (Kenai Airport) ($3 van ride) Leaving KSC at 5 p.m.

■ September 18th — Birthday Luncheon, 11:30 a.m. ($6)

■ Wednesday, September 25th — The KSC Pet Parade at 10:30a (Call KSC to inquire about entering your pet.)

■ Thursday, September 19th — Movie Time “The Pirate” a 1948 film starring Judy Garland & Gene Kelly ($1) at 3 p.m.

■ Upcoming Trips:

— October 11th — Day Trip to the Oktoberfest in Girdwood, Leave KSC at 2 p.m. , $12 van ride, return around 8 p.m. , No-Host Dinner, Must RSVP and prepay at KSC.

■ General Exercise: Monday / Wednesday / Friday — 9 a.m.

■ Growing Strong Strength Training Class: Monday / Wednesday / Friday — 10 a.m.

■ Line Dancing: Monday / Thursday — 10 a.m. - at the Kenai Recreation Center (Please stop by the KSC to sign up for Beginning Line Dancing)

■ Spanish Class, Monday’s at 1p; facilitated by Lateshia Tsosi

■ Tai-Chi: Tuesday / Thursday — 10 a.m.

■ Zumba Gold: Tuesday / Thursday — 2 p.m. — donation suggested

■ Stretch, Bend & Breath: Tuesday/Thursday — 6 p.m. — donations suggested

■ Massage Therapy — Wednesdays (by appointment only) — $40 a session — sign up at KSC

■ Tuesday Classes: 3rd – Kumihimo ($3) (Japanese Braiding) / 10th - Health Class with Nurse Coleene / 17th Medicare Class “Changes to Medicare & the new Health Care Law with Kathy / 27th - TBA

■ Open Quilting — 1 p.m. Tuesdays

■ Knitting — 1 p.m. Fridays

■ September 4th & 18th — Social Security virtual office: 9 a.m. -Noon (The Kenai Senior is the venue to talk to the Anchorage Social Security Office via video conferencing. This is a first come first serve service. A signup sheet will be available when you arrive at the KSC. No appointments and no age limits)

■ Bluegrass —September 12th, 19th & 26th — 6:30-10 p.m. — Toe-tappin’ fun for the whole family!

■ Council on Aging — September 12th

■ Kenai Senior Connection Board Meeting — September 20th

Congregate Meals are served Monday – Friday from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. unless otherwise noted. Our mission at the Kenai Senior Center is to serve as a community focal point for senior services where adults 60-plus come together to engage in opportunities for dignity and personal growth. Not so Golden Globes

Meryl Streep has played many roles in her long career and holds the record for the most Academy Award nominations of any actor. Among her portrayals was British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. At the Golden Globe Awards Sunday night, Streep behaved as if she actually had been elected to high office, entitling her to mount a high horse.

What is the Sesquicentennial?

Sesquicentennial is a jawbreaker word, too big even for Scrabble, but it does have a noble ring to it. Its meaning is far simpler: 150th anniversary. Any anniversary worth such a big name also is worth a good party, and this time the party is for Alaska: 2017 marks 150 years since the United States purchased this Great Land from Russia. Read more
