What’s happening at the Kenai Senior Center for the month of February 2014 (all activities are held at the Kenai Senior Center unless otherwise stated):

■ Every Friday in February are Waffle Fridays, 8-10 a.m., $3 per person

■ February 6 — Unocal Retires Lunch, 11:30 a.m.

■ February 6 — Brown Bears Game, leave KSC at 6:30 p.m., $5 van ride

■ February 11 — Health Class with Nurse Coleene

■ February 13 — MS Support Group, 1 p.m.

■ February 14 — Valentine’s Day Luncheon, noon-2 p.m. Dinner & Dancing- $6

■ February 17 — Closed for President’s Day

■ February 18-22 — Area Wide Senior Olympics (call KSC for additional information)

■ February 18 — Computer Class “Navigating the Internet” with Jan

■ February 19 — Birthday Lunch

■ February 24 — No-Host Dinner to Odies in Kenai, 5 p.m.

■ February 25 — Hand Built Ceramics Class, 1 p.m., learn to build your own creations using clay.

■ February 27 — Movie Time “North to Alaska” starring John Wayne

■ General Exercise: Monday/Wednesday/Friday, 9 a.m.

■ Growing Strong Strength Training Class: Monday/Wednesday/Friday, 10 a.m.

■ February 19th & 21st This class will be participating in the Senior Olympics Walk-a-Thon at the Soldotna Mall

■ Line Dancing: Monday/Thursday, 10 a.m. - at the Kenai Recreation Center (Please stop by the KSC to sign up for Beginning Line Dancing)

■ Spanish Class, Mondays, 1 p.m., donation suggested

■ Tai-Chi: Tuesday/Thursday, 10 a.m.

■ Zumba Gold: Tuesday/Thursday, 2 p.m., donation suggested

■ Knitting, 1 p.m. Fridays

■ All-in-1 Craft Time, February 4 — Tie-Dye Infinity Scarves (Bring a large white t-shirt to cut and $3)

■ February 5 and 19 — Social Security virtual officen 9 a.m.-noon. (The Kenai Senior is the venue to talk to the Anchorage Social Security Office via video conferencing. This is a first come first serve service. A signup sheet will be available when you arrive at the KSC. No appointments and no age limits.)

■ Council on Aging, February 13, 4:30 p.m.

■ Kenai Senior Connection Board Meeting, February 28, 9:30 a.m.

Community Meals are served Monday – Friday from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. unless otherwise noted. Our mission at the Kenai Senior Center is to serve as a community focal point for senior services where adults 60-plus come together to engage in opportunities for dignity and personal growth.

Not so Golden Globes

Meryl Streep has played many roles in her long career and holds the record for the most Academy Award nominations of any actor. Among her portrayals was British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. At the Golden Globe Awards Sunday night, Streep behaved as if she actually had been elected to high office, entitling her to mount a high horse.

What is the Sesquicentennial?

Sesquicentennial is a jawbreaker word, too big even for Scrabble, but it does have a noble ring to it. Its meaning is far simpler: 150th anniversary. Any anniversary worth such a big name also is worth a good party, and this time the party is for Alaska: 2017 marks 150 years since the United States purchased this Great Land from Russia. Read more
