Russell and Crystal Wilson of Kenai announce the birth of their son, James Russell (Ighsakuun) Wilson, at 10:30 a.m. on April 22, 2014. He weighed 10 pounds, 3 ounces and measured 20 inches. He joins a brother, Jake. His grandparents are Russell Wilson Sr., the late Constance Wilson, Patty Olender, Mike Olender, and Jeff Dent.


The Kenai Peninsula students earned a GPA of 3.5 or higher to earn dean’s list honors at George Fox University in Newburg, Oregon, during the 2014 spring semester. They inlcude:

■ Brandi Wagoner of Kenai, who is academically considered a sophomore based on credits earned;

■ Megan Arnoldy of Moose Pass, who is academically considered a senior based on credits earned;

■ Delissa Severson of Soldotna, who is academically considered a senior based on credits earned.

Kristi Isaak of Soldotna has earned her Bachelor of Arts and Jennifer Scott of Soldotna was awarded her Master of Arts from Northwestern State University of Louisiana in Natchitoches, Louisiana at its Spring Commencement Exercises Friday, May 9 in Prather Coliseum.

Kati Dutcher of Soldotna has been named to the Dean’s List at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, for the spring 2014 semester. To be selected, students must have at least a 3.6 grade point average on a 4.0 scale with at least 12 graded hours and be in good standing with the university.

Five Kenai Peninsula Borough School District high school seniors were awarded $36,000 worth of scholarships from BP Alaska. Three KPBS students were awarded $4,000 scholarships each and were among 25 Alaska winners of the BP Principals and Commissioner Scholarship program state wide. In addition, two seniors were each awarded a $12,000 BP scholarship to pursue degrees in process technology through the University of Alaska. Since 1985, BP has awarded nearly $3.5 million to more than 750 Alaska students who have excelled in academics and community service.

2014 BP Principals and Commissioner scholarship winners:

■ Caleb Lyons, Cook Inlet Academy;

■ Tiffany Allen, Skyview High School;

■ Mary Valenzuela, Soldotna High School

2014 BP Alaska Process Technology scholarship winners:

■ Hanah Hoff, Kenai High School;

■ Lisha Oftedal; Skyview High School.

Two central Kenai Peninsula students are among 20 Alaska high school seniors have been awarded ConocoPhillips scholarships.

Each student will receive $5,000. The scholarships were awarded in consideration of a variety of factors including service to their community, the applicant’s desire to make a future contribution to Alaska, school activities, achievements and academics. Some 160 graduating seniors across Alaska applied for the scholarships. The winners include:

■ Seth Carstens, Nikiski Middle High School; and

■ Kathryn Knackstedt, Kenai Central High School.
