Carolyn Kiefer of Kenai, a sophomore in the College of Nursing, and Samantha Navarre of Kenai, a freshman in the College of Nursing, have been named to the Dean’s List for the 2014 spring semester at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. Full-time students who earn a 3.5 grade-point average or better on a 4.0 scale are eligible for the Dean’s Honor Roll.

William Jordan Brown graduated from Boise State University in Boise, Idaho, with a degree in Health Science on May 17.

Eli Butler of Kenai has received a University of Alaska 4-H Scholarship. She will receive one year of tuition at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Butler, who graduated from the Connections homeschool and correspondence program of the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District, plans to study veterinary medicine. She has been active in 4-H for eight years and is also a UA Scholar.

Olivia Tice of Soldotna has been placed on the Dean’s List of the College of Arts and Sciences for Excellence in Scholarship for the Spring 2014 semester at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.

Megan Arnoldy of Moose Pass was among a record 725 graduates who participated in commencement ceremonies at George Fox University in Newberg, Oregon, in early May. Arnoldy earned a bachelor of science in mathematics.

Stan Westerman graduated magna cum laude from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Arizona on May 3. He majored in Aeronautical Science with a minor in Meteorology and Psychology. He has earned private and commercial pilot licenses, completed flight instrument training, and is a Certified Flight Instructor. He has accepted a position as a flight instructor at Embry-Riddle. Stan graduated from Soldotna High School in 2010. He is the son of Terri Tobias and David Westerman of Cooper Landing.

At the Golden Globe Awards Sunday night, Streep behaved as if she actually had been elected to high office, entitling her to mount a high horse.

What is the Sesquicentennial?

Sesquicentennial is a jawbreaker word, too big even for Scrabble, but it does have a noble ring to it. Its meaning is far simpler: 150th anniversary. Any anniversary worth such a big name also is worth a good party, and this time the party is for Alaska: 2017 marks 150 years since the United States purchased this Great Land from Russia. Read more
