Seize the day!

“Carpe diem! Rejoice while you are alive; enjoy the day; live life to the fullest; make the most of what you have. It is later than you think.”

— Horace

One of my strongest desires in life is to make a mark. I want to leave my corner of the world a little better than when I found it. As a father, husband, and pastor I have had a lot of opportunities to reach into the future and touch a time that I will never see. I am convinced that this is what all of us ultimately want to do, touch a future that we will never see. In truth this is what God is calling each one of us to do.

I have found that if we diligently and daily seek the Lord and ask Him to give us world changing opportunities He will. The first thing that we need to get out of our heads is that we are of little consequence to the larger world. We are called of God, we are chosen specifically by Him to be His agents of change in this world. We are His image bearers, we are His beloved, His children and His Bride to be. We are the immortals that will see the end of all that is and the beginning of what will be. We can walk comfortably and confidently into the very throne room of the Creator of the Universe, climb up into His lap, wrap our arms around His neck, lay a big sloppy kiss on His cheek and call Him Daddy. If you think for a moment that you are of little consequence to God or to this world then you are sorely mistaken!

Living a life of significance is the challenge that all of us face every day. Life is not a game or a vast cosmic joke that is played out for God’s amusement. We are given such a small amount of time that we need to decide early on how we are going to live; in the wings of obscurity, or on the stage of perspicuity. Do you want to live a life that impacts the world around you or are you content watching others achieve great things?

I am convinced that most people live their lives totally asleep, never seeing beyond a semi-conscious, dream like trance state that never sees the real world. Albert Einstein said: “There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.” I am of the later belief, I have studied the human body, the histories of several cultures, looked into the quantum state of reality as we know it. In all the things that I have read and seen I have become convinced that all life as we know it is a miraculous gift from God and only God. It is my desire to wake the sleeper in all of us. Paul tells the church in Ephesus 5:14 to;

“Awake, sleeper,

And arise from the dead,

And Christ will shine on you.”

We are all asleep and dead to God and ourselves. A quote from a movie called “Joe versus the Volcano”, a character Meg Ryan plays says; “My father says that almost the whole world is asleep. Everybody you know. Everybody you see. Everybody you talk to. He says that only a few people are awake and they live in a state of constant total amazement.” Constant amazement, do you live in this state or are you asleep?
