Jumping for a record

Posted: October 17, 2011 - 9:33am

About 450 Mountain View Elementary students were doing jumping jacks simultaneously on Tuesday. Their effort was part of an attempt to break the Guinness World Record of Most People Doing Jumping Jacks In a 24-hour Time Period. The current record is 20,425.

"We do jumping jacks as part of our physical routine all the time," Mountain View gym teacher Rob Dimick said. "It's nice to be take what we do in class and compete and try to break the world record too."

Mountain View was just one of countless schools and organizations throughout the world that participated in the event.

"It's part of Mrs. Obama's '(Let's Move)'," said Dimick. "She's trying to bring physical fitness and awareness across the country."

As the students performed their jumping jacks for one minute, Dimick led them with encouragement.

"I just thought it was pretty cool to see all those kids doing jumping jacks at one time," he said. "To have them in class and then to see that -- it was cool, I was proud of them."

Once the paperwork gets sent in from every organization and school, the jumping jacks will be tallied to determine if the record was, in fact, broken.

"We'll receive a certificate from the Guinness Book of World Records for our participation," Dimick said.
