KPC Showcase event to feature Alaskan author

Posted: October 17, 2011 - 9:40am

The public is invited to the first installment of the KPC Showcase Art and Lecture series at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 19 in room 109 (Ward Building) at the Kenai River Campus. This free event will feature former Alaska Writer Laureate Nancy Lord who will present "Writing and the Alaska Environment." Lord will share excerpts from her 5 non-fiction books and talk about her reasons for writing them and some of the research that went into her work.

Nancy's latest book is "Early Warming: Crisis and Response in the Climate-Changed North," and still fresh on the shelves is "Rock, Water, Wild: An Alaskan Life."

Lord holds a Master of Fine Arts in writing from Vermont College. She has taught fiction and nonfiction writing workshops and classes in nature and memoir writing for many years at KPC's Kachemak Bay Campus and currently teaches in the low-residency Master of Fine Arts program at UAA.

KPC ABE instructor wins statewide educator award

Lolita Brache, KPC's Kachemak Bay Campus Adult Basic Education/GED instructor, was awarded the 2011 Educator of the Year award by the Alaska Adult Education Association at its recent annual meeting.

Brache has taught ABE, GED and ESL students for 15 years at KBC and by regularly travelling to villages across Kachemak Bay, Nikolaevsk and Voznesenka.

"For many years, Lolita has been a tireless, creative, committed and proactive leader in the adult and early childhood literacy field, and her efforts, advocacy and compassion have been widely recognized," said KBC Director Carol Swartz.

KPC students' financial aid and employment impacts

According to Student Services Director Bill Howell, KPC students have received $2,557,585 in financial aid this semester. In addition, students received more than $87,000 in scholarship checks from other organizations.

Howell also reports that a record-setting 64 student employees are working for KPC this semester. Students taking six or more credits are eligible to work up to 20 hours a week and almost every area of the college has one or more student employees assisting many KPC faculty and staff. The convenience of working on campus around class schedules is efficient for students and these work experiences bolster students' resumes.

The public is encouraged to come learn what opportunities exist to be part of the literacy program in the community. For more information, please contact Diane Taylor at 262-0328 or e-mail ifdtt@kpc.alaska.edu.

New show in KRC's art gallery

The next exhibition in KRC's Gary L. Freeburg Gallery will show the work of artist Jean Steele, one of KPC's new adjunct art faculty this semester. Steele's show will display her new ceramic forms with iron oxide stain.

The exhibition will open on Tuesday, Oct. 18 and remain in place through Nov. 11.
