Workforce development offers academies
The Workforce Development Center is offering free after school academies. High School students may attend any of the academies at any of the schools.
A Construction Academy will begin Jan. 5 2012 at Skyview High School with instructor Barry Hartman. The students will be constructing a gazebo. This class will run Tuesday's and Thursday's from 3:00-6:00 p.m. through March 8.
The following academies will take place next semester, dates and times to be announced: Medical Terminology at Soldotna High School (during the day) with Bruce Rife, Employability Skills at Workforce Development Center with Justine Reese, Personal Care Attendant at Skyview High School with Betty Miller and a Plumbing Academy at Soldotna High School with Tyson Cox..
If a student successfully completes any of the 60-hour academies they are eligible to receive a half practical art credit. Transportation may be provided if needed.

Connections Homeschool Program has open enrollment for all students at this time. All students not enrolled in public school are encouraged to contact the Connections office at 714-8880 to learn about all of the educational benefits that Connections Homeschool Program can provide for children.
The BOOK IT! K-6 Program has begun and we are happy to be a part of it. Spend just 20 minutes each day focusing on raising a reader. Set a monthly reading goal and when that goal is met, celebrate achievement by going to Pizza Hut and redeeming the BOOK IT! coupon for a personal pan pizza. Connections Homeschool is enrolled with the National Spelling Bee. All Connections students in grades 3-8 are encouraged to participate to build confidence, increase vocabulary and improve spelling skills. The 2012 Alaska State spelling bee will be held on Thursday, March 8th in Anchorage. Local spelling bee will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 17 in Soldotna. Yearbooks: You can order your yearbook by coming to the office and paying $35. Seniors get free yearbooks so you don't have to pay.
Senior yearbook ads: The Annual staff is giving Senior Ads priority in the yearbook. Senior Ads are an excellent way for parents, grandparents and friends to express congratulations to their graduating student. Prices are as follows: business card $50, quarter page $75, half page $125, and whole page $175. Erica McGahan is a sophomore at CIA who will be offering free tutoring to elementary students from 3-4 p.m. on Wednesdays. If your elementary student needs some extra help in a subject area, please have them show up at Miss Becky's room at 3 p.m. with their homework. The cost will be $5 for each session to pay the responsible adult during this time. Erica is offering the tutoring as a free service. If you have questions, please call Erica at 283-9495.

Help needed for the Christmas Program: As Christmas approaches, Mrs. Glaves and I are preparing for the annual CIA Christmas concert. This year the concert will be on December 4th at 3pm in the CIA gymnasium. It is going to be a wonderful production that celebrates our Savior, Jesus Christ! Mrs. Glaves has asked me to communicate with you a few of the items she needs to gather for the concert. The 3rd-6th graders are performing a short play in the Christmas concert, so Mrs. Glaves is in need of the following: 6 angel costumes, Nativity costumes (Mary, Joseph, etc.), sheep costumes, donkey costumes, dog costumes, cow costumes. Hoops for the Holidays: The high school basketball teams will be hosting our 2nd Annual "Hoops for the Holidays" elementary basketball camp at CIA this December 19-22 (Mon-Thurs), 10 a.m.-2 p.m. daily, for Kindergarteners through 6th graders. Last year we had over 70 kids come out, and it was a blast. More information on cost and registration will come in the following weeks, but for now, spread the word on the dates. It is the end of the first quarter and time for work samples. Parents and students can submit work samples at the office by demonstrating knowledge to their teacher or by submitting examples via email. This is the opportunity for your children to show off their accomplishments and have their work displayed in the office. The office is open from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. for your convenience.
The National GeoBee competition will be held for all Kenai Peninsula students in grades 4-8 in December. This is a wonderful opportunity for your students to have fun with geography concepts and interact with other students.

Kalifornsky Beach Elementary
Our Veteran's Day assembly was a huge success. We were given the great opportunity to hear stories from a WWII veteran, some Vietnam veterans and from some that served in Iraq and Afghanistan. We are so thankful for all that our Veteran's do to keep us safe.
The Auction and Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser is coming up on Nov. 18. We are looking for donations of items to be auctioned. If you can help, please call the office or you may bring your donation directly to the school.
The nurse's office is in need of some gloves and some spare pants (especially sweatpants and jeans). Please bring your donations to the nurse's office.
Nurses Evie, Gayle and Martha will begin TB skin testing today (Monday) at approximately 8:30 a.m. If your child is scheduled for a TB test, you are welcome to come and be with your child during the test. Call if you would like to set up a specific time.

Kaleidoscope School of Arts and Science
After School Activities continue to meet on Wednesdays and Thursdays for 3rd through 6th graders. Pick up time is 4:45 p.m.

The new Vice President will be voted in at the November 17th meeting. The yearbook committee is in need of your help. They are looking for pictures of classroom action, field trips and any other fun shots you might have. If you own a business, or know someone that might want to purchase an ad in the yearbook please contact the PTA. The Lil' Shoppers Shoppe will be held at the school December 6-9. This is a great opportunity for students to shop for family members and friends. Please watch your Friday Folders for more information on this and many other PTA activities.
If your family needs assistance this holiday season, please complete a Christmas Drive form and return it to Miss Linda in the office by November 18. This will be kept totally confidential. If you would like to help provide any gifts or funding for the Drive, please make sure to turn your form in to Miss Linda by Friday. We do not solicit our community for help but rely completely on our Kaleidoscope families.
There will be New Parent Informational Meetings November 15th from 9:30-10:30 a.m. and November 21st from 6:30-7:30 p.m. These mandatory meetings are for all new families to Kaleidoscope, those on the wait list and all families going through the spring lottery. Please let the office know which date you plan to attend; you only need to go to one meeting.

Tuesday, November 15th KCHS' world history students will be video conferencing with students from the Middle East (Jordan), South Dakota, and Louisiana. During the conference, students will be primarily discussing will be the democratization movements throughout the Middle East collectively called the Arab Spring. Kenai Middle School
Swag and bowmakers are needed! The sixth grade staff needs bows made and volunteers to help for their annual Christmas swag fundraiser. If you are willing to make bows at home before the Thanksgiving break, or come to KMS on Monday Nov. 21st to assemble swags, please call the school at 283-1700. We will provide you with ribbon and a bow maker. We will also teach you how to make a bow. We will be selling our beautiful swags for $20.00 all month and they will be available for pick up November 22nd and the 23rd. We cannot guarantee their freshness after November the 23rd. As always, we cannot succeed without our awesome parent volunteers - thank you for your help.

Thank you to the Nikiski families for supporting our school fundraiser this year. The students sold over $18,000.00 worth of merchandise. The top three sellers who get to be "Principal for the Day" are McKenna Leighton (overall top seller), Cadence Bitterich and Celina Martinez. The two top selling classes who will be treated to a pizza party are Mrs. Barnes and Mrs. Burnett's classes. The top selling student from each class got a chance to "Pie Principal Callahan" at a recent assembly. Students will have an opportunity to shop for holiday gifts at the annual Holiday Store December 7 - 9. PTA sponsors this popular event. Volunteers are needed and are asked to call the school.
Grades 1 - 3 will present their musical on Thursday, Dec. 1, 6:30 p.m., at the Soldotna High School auditorium.

Students are reminded that they must have funds in their lunch accounts in order to purchase a school lunch. Charges are not allowed. Parents can check their child's lunch account any time through Powerschool. Click "Balance" on the left side of the screen. Parents may also call the school to check account balances.
There is a correction on the November lunch menu. Two entree choices are listed for November 14 - 30. Only the first entree listed will be available.
Cold weather is here and students go outdoors daily unless the temperature or chill factor falls below minus 10 degrees. All students should bring winter gear to school, including a winter-weight coat, snow pants, hats, gloves, and boots. Parents who need help acquiring these items for their children are asked to contact Nurse Donna.
Skyview High School
Thursday is a Super Activity Day and involves some schedule changes. There will be no 2nd period class, so the schedule will be 1st, 4th, 3rd (extended activity) 5th, lunch, 6th and 7th. Students, please plan accordingly.
On November 15 the Classroom Without Walls students from SoHi, KCHS and Skyview have the exciting opportunity to participate in an interactive video conference with students in North Dakota, Louisiana and an Arab nation. They will be discussing the events of Arab Spring 2011, the causes and outcomes of the revolution, and how they have affected the U.S. and foreign relations. The event will take place at 4 am Alaska Time, with the students meeting at each of their respective schools.
Juniors will be involved in WorkKeys testing the mornings of November 15-17.
As winter comes upon us we are in search of items to help keep our students stay warm and dry. Nurse Tammy is currently accepting donations of sweatpants of varying sizes in size 5/6 and 5/7 shirts. Thanks to all who have donated thus far. In addition, we are also hosting a winter gear drive. Any gently used items are gladly accepted.
Our school also participates in the great Aluminum Round-up. We are currently accepting aluminum cans. They can be dropped at the school. Please crush and bag them, and drop them off. Help us turn aluminum cans into cash.
Mark your calendar for November 17, Book Bingo. This is a family fun event! We will be giving away books and families can sign up for pizza if they wish. Come and spend a great night together to encourage reading and helping your child start their very own library. We look forward to seeing you there.

Thanksgiving holiday is Thursday, Nov. 24 and Friday, Nov. 25. There will be no school for students on these days.
We want to say Good Luck to our Robotics team. Mrs. Schlung and Mr. Shook have done an excellent job in preparing students for their November 19 competition. The team has worked hard, and we look forward to seeing the end result.

Soldotna Elementary recently held its school contest for the annual Elks Hoop Shoot. The students competed in three age categories. One boy and one girl in each category will advance to the district competition. The school winners in the 8-9 year old category are Colton Sorhus and Courtney Coates. In the 10-11 year old category the winners are Landen DeWitt and Clara Moore. Jerrik Carlstrom and Emily Pieh will represent Soldotna El in the 12-13 year old category. Great job to all the participants.
Pajama Day will be Friday, Nov. 18; come to school in your PJ's. Congratulations to our "paws"itively wonderful students last month, they are: Emma Rock, winner of a 2-topping pizza donated by Bub's Pizza; Brett Spence, winner of the Jumpin' Junction pass donated by Laurie Kapp; and to Brandon Crowder and Micheal Gagnon, winners of an Orca movie pass donated by Shelley Endsley. Thanksgiving break is soon approaching and there will be no school on November 24-25.

Congratulations to our girls swim team that was awarded the ASAA Academic Award (with the highest GPA) this weekend during the State championship meet. They were also awarded the ASAA Sportsmanship Award for this year.
The Drama Department will present the comedy The Count of Monte Cristo High at 7 PM on November 17-18-19. Admission is $5 per person. Soldotna High School is once again working on their canned food drive "Battle of the Cans". In order to provide holiday meals for our families we are collecting items to put together a traditional turkey dinner. We are looking for donations of turkeys, potatoes and ingredients for pumpkin pie. Students are also collecting all types of food items through their advisories to donate to the Food Bank.

Student council held a pumpkin carving contest and the winners are as follows: Most creative - Nicholas Truesdell, Funniest - Hannah Campos, Most Intricate - Tristan Wright and Ryan Kimball, Scariest - Hailey Whitney. Advisories also decorated their doorway in the holiday spirit. Winning advisories were Mr. Hanson and Ms. Bos. They were awarded with treats on Halloween Day.

Soldotna, October 28, 2011-- What is your vision for student learning? The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District is revising "Goals for Student Learning" BP 0210(a). The KPBSD school board invites your comments and thoughts about the proposed revised policy. The current Board Policy 0210, Goals for Student Learning, was adopted in 1996. This is a broad policy that serves to guide district level curriculum decisions. Please take a few minutes to review the new draft "Vision for Student Learning," the current policy, then offer your thoughts via an online comment box. On November 23 students in first through third grades will participate in the annual Stone Soup Play and family lunch. Students will dramatize the story of Stone Soup and then host a Stone Soup lunch for their parents.
Kindergarteners are beginning a unit on the amazing pumpkin. Study will involve math, science and nutrition topics. The kindergarten class is also in need of a parent to help compile a scrapbook for their class.
Upper elementary students in the Adopt-a-Stream Project at Soldotna Creek each month. The students conduct several experiments at the creek to monitor the status of the water and the local stream habitat. Classrooms rotate this activity throughout the year. Parents are welcome to join in this walking field trip.
Every Friday at Sterling Elementary is Family Friday. Families are invited to come to school to have lunch with their students. There is one lunch at 11:40 a.m. and one recess at 12:10 p.m. for the whole school so that families can all eat together. The online Volunteer registration must be completed for anyone who wishes to stay past lunch and join the students out at recess.
PTA is sponsoring gum day on November 18. Students who require special gum because of dental work should bring their own gum in the morning. Falcon Fun Night will also be on Nov. 18 from 3:30 - 5:00 p.m. The cost is $3.00 per student. If a parent attends with their student, he or she gets in free. Fun Night activities will include the Sports Jump from Jumpin' Junction, a cookie walk, rock wall climbing, face painting, and much more. The concession stand and school store will both be open, so students can bring money for snacks or purchases if they have permission to do so from their parents or guardians.
Students in 3rd - 6th grade have started meeting for the Battle of the Books competition that will be held in February. 3rd and 4th graders meet during lunch on Wednesday and the 5th and 6th graders meet on Thursdays, and participation is optional.
Sterling Elementary is a collection site for the Sterling Community Share in the Giving Program. Donations of non-perishable food items and cash are being accepted now through Nov. 18.
