School board to meet
The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District Board of Education meets at 7 p.m. at 148 *. Binkley Street in Soldotna (unless otherwise noted).

Workforce development offers academies
The Workforce Development Center is offering free after school academies. High School students may attend any of the academies at any of the schools.
A Construction Academy will begin Jan. 5 at Skyview High School with instructor Barry Hartman. The students will be constructing a gazebo. This class will run Tuesday’s and Thursday’s from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. through March 8.
A Plumbing Academy beginning Feb. 6 at Soldotna High School with instructor Tyson Cox. This will be an introduction to care and use of tools, fittings and materials used in the plumbing and heating trade to safely transfer fluids and gases. Class days are Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. until April 23rd.
Culinary Arts Academy beginning Jan. 10 at Nikiski High School with instructor Gary Wiebel. Students will learn safety in workplace, safe food handling, nutrition and wellness, weights & measurements, purchasing & planning, basic cooking techniques, and earn the Alaska Food Handlers Card Prep/Test. Class days are Tues, Wed and Thurs from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and occasional Saturdays.
Upcoming Academies with dates and times TBA: Employability Skills, Construction, ETT, PCA and Dental Assistant.
High school students may attend any of the academies at any of the schools and all academies are free.
If a student successfully completes any of the 60-hour academies they are eligible to receive a half practical art credit.

Important Safety Reminder — Please do not drive your cars to the back portable classrooms. This is a huge hazard to the safety of our children. Children run back and forth between the main building and the portable classrooms and it’s very difficult to see them in the dark. Please help us keep our children safe by keeping your cars in the front parking lots only.
Online Volunteer Sign Ups: We are working hard in the office to provide an easy way for you to sign up to help us with home athletic events, as well as other things that come up. We think the online system will be the best way to keep everyone up to date on what is needed, as well as providing you with an easy way to sign up. We will be sending you links for signing up as new sign up lists are created, so please look for these emails, and take a moment to see if there’s something you can help us with. Yearbooks On Sale: You can order your yearbook by coming to the office and paying $35. Seniors get free yearbooks, so you don’t have to order or pay.
Senior Yearbook Ads — the Annual staff is giving Senior Ads priority in the yearbook. Senior Ads are an excellent way for parents, grandparents and friends to express congratulations to their graduating student. Prices are as follows: business card $50, quarter page $75, half page $125, and whole page $175. Space is limited, so please, if you’re interested in a Senior Ad, please contact Elizabeth Dailey through the front office ASAP. Thank you.

HOOPS FOR THE HOLIDAYS! The high school basketball teams will be hosting our 2nd Annual “Hoops for the Holidays” elementary basketball camp at CIA this December 19-22 (Mon-Thurs), 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily, for Kindergarteners through 6th graders. Last year we had over 70 kids come out, and it was a blast! More information on cost and registration will come in the following weeks, but for now, spread the word on the dates! Connections Homeschool
The BOOK IT!  K-6 Program has begun and we are happy to be a part of it. Spend just 20 minutes each day focusing on raising a reader. Set a monthly reading goal and when that goal is met, celebrate achievement by going to Pizza Hut and redeeming the BOOK IT! coupon for a personal pan pizza. Connections Homeschool is enrolled with the National Spelling Bee. All Connections students in grades 3-8 are encouraged to participate to build confidence, increase vocabulary and improve spelling skills.

Kaleidoscope School of Arts and Science
The Lil’ Shoppers Shoppe will be held at the school December 6-9. This is a great opportunity for students to shop for family members and friends. Please make sure your child has their envelope and money turned into their teacher.
If you are donating items for the Christmas Drive please plan to have them at the school no later than December 9. Please contact Miss Linda in the office if you have any questions about the Christmas Drive. Thank you for helping make the Christmas Drive such a success.
The students at KSAS are holding their annual canned food drive to help families in need this holiday season. The drive will end on December 9th, so this is your last week to send in any canned food or boxed items.
The Annual Holiday Concert is tomorrow night at 7 p.m. Students are asked to be at the school by 6:45 p.m. Please remember to have them wear their Sunday best unless they are to wear a costume. All students in grades 1st-6th will be bused to KCHS for dress rehearsal tomorrow morning. Students will be leaving the school at 9:15 a.m. and returning at 11:45 a.m.
On December 8 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. the 5th and 6th grade classes will be holding a wax museum in their classrooms. Watch the Friday Folders for more information on this event.
The first Family Fun Night of the year will be held December 15 at 6 p.m. There will be cookie decorating, crafts and Christmas stories read by Coach Jeremy. Family Fun Nights are a great way to meet other Kaleidoscope families. Bring the whole family for a great night.

Kalifornsky Beach Elementary
The Site Council will meet today at 3:00 p.m. in Mrs. Linton’s office.
The 3rd and 4th grade Student Council is currently collecting new toys for the “Toys for Tots” program. These toys will be given to local families for Christmas. If you would like to help, please bring your donations to the box in the school commons. Donations will be collected from Dec. 1-14.
“Ice Cream Bombes” from Cold Stone Creamery are on sale now. Each “Bombe” costs $15.00 and $5.00 from each pie will go to K-Beach for additional playground equipment. Order forms were sent home last week. If you missed yours, please let your child’s teacher or the office know. Bombes are on sale until Dec. 12.
The primary grades musical performance of “The Elves’ Impersonator” will be on Dec. 12 at 7:00 p.m. at the SoHi auditorium. Admission is free. Come and join us for an evening of music and fun.
K-3 students will be travelling by bus to SoHi that morning for a final dress rehearsal. Please make sure you student has turned in a permission slip for this trip.
Mr. Daniels’ Class is studying the Rock Cycle using a rock tumbler and clay projects to simulate what happens in nature. We have witnessed sedimentation, metamorphic processes, and examined igneous rocks up close. We are learning area and perimeter in class. We have decided to take a swimming field trip to measure the area and perimeter of the swimming pool to see a real example of these calculations. Thank you to the parent volunteer who make these great trips happen. We are working on Reader’s Theater in class and the kids are really excited to perform in front of a real audience.

Kenai Central High School
You are cordially invited to attend the Annual Holiday Band Concert and Annual Dessert Auction at Kenai Central High School. The concert will include performances from both the Kenai Central High School Bands and the Kenai Middle Bands. The dessert auction began several years ago as a fundraiser to help support the Kenai bands and their need for new music, uniforms and instruments.  This tradition will continue this year as we endeavor to bring the gift of music to our youth and our community.

On Thursday, Dec. 15, your child will sign up for one of twenty clubs sponsored by the staff and community members.  Starting Friday, Jan. 6, for five Fridays during last period, students will be attending their selected club.  Students will not be missing out on regular core or exploratory classes because each class period has been shortened five minutes to allow for a forty minute club period. This is an excellent opportunity for staff members to get to know different students in the building, while sharing some of their special talents. Ask your child how they are enjoying their club. Please feel free to come and visit a class or spend some time observing a club activity.

Mountain View Elementary
Young Shoppers Club will be open Monday, Dec. 5-9 in the Library. If you would like to volunteer to help students shop please call the office at 283-8600 to schedule a time.
We are asking each family, if able, to donate one item for the Christmas Drive. Preschool and Kindergarten students are asked to bring 1 hat or headband, First & Second Grade – 1 pair mittens or gloves, Third & Fourth Grade – 1 package of socks, and Fifth Grade – canned goods. Please place these items in the large Christmas box outside the office.  
The Winter Concert for First, Second and Third Grade is scheduled for Monday, Dec. 5 at 6:00 p.m. in the KCHS auditorium.  Students should be at the high school between 5:30 p.m. and 5:45 p.m.  
Friday, Dec. 9 is “Crazy Hair Day.”
No school for students on Friday, December 16. This will be an inservice day for school staff.
Winter Break is December 19 – January 2.  Students return to school on Tuesday, Jan. 3.

Nikiski Middle/High School
2011 1A – 2A – 3A State Wrestling Championships @ Nikiski High School. Nikiski will be hosting the State Wrestling Tournament again this year. The tournament begins Friday, Dec. 9-10. Wrestlers from all over Alaska will be gathering to compete. This will be an exciting weekend so come out and support our wrestlers! Nikiski North Star Elementary
Today is the beginning of our week long holiday shoppers club for students. Penguin Patch Holiday Shoppe is a wonderful opportunity for your child to experience the joy of giving during the holiday season while selecting gifts for the entire family. This program offers a safe, educational, and fun experience. The holiday shop will be held in the library all this week from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. We can always use volunteers to help the students with their shopping. If you would like to volunteer, please call PTA President Sasha Fallon at 776-7629 or 398-4680.
Plan now to attend the Holiday Concert on Tuesday, Dec. 6th at 7:00 p.m. at Nikiski Middle High School. This performance will be presented by our Pre-K, Kindergarten, First and Second graders.  The students involved in this concert are the classes of Ms. Pala, Mrs. Burnett, Mrs. Trammell, Mrs. Green, Mrs. Thye, Mrs. Erwin, Mrs. Hooper/Settlemyer, and Mrs. Armstrong.  For more information, please call the school at 776-2600.

Redoubt Elementary
PTA is sponsoring Redoubt’s annual Holiday Kindness program. Redoubt families who need help this
Christmas must contact the school by today. Volunteers who would like to help may also contact the

Students will have an opportunity to shop for holiday gifts at the Kids Corner Gift Shoppe
December 7 – 9. Gift prices range from $ .25 to $14.95, with most items in the $1 - $4 range.
PTA sponsors this popular event. Volunteers are needed and are asked to call the school.  
Innisbrook fundraiser orders have been distributed to students for delivery. Anyone who has not received their order should call Mrs. Hale at 260-4341 or email her at shale@kpbsd.k12.ak.us.
The lunchroom has limited microwave availability and students have a limited amount of time to eat. To allow everyone enough time to use the microwaves, students are asked to limit the amount of time needed to heat lunch items brought from home to 2 minutes.
There will be no PTA or Site Council meetings in December.   

Skyview High School
The music department will present its Christmas concert Thursday, Dec. 8, at 7 p.m. in the commons.
The annual food drive to benefit the local Food Bank runs through Friday, Dec. 9.  Students are encouraged to bring canned goods to their advisory class teacher for the competition between grades.    
Exams for periods 1, 4 and 6 will be given December 14.
Exams for periods 2, 5 and 7 will be given December 15.

Soldotna Elementary
Congratulations to the Soldotna Elementary Robotics Team, The Rock’in Wolves. They placed 1st in the Robot Design category at the First Lego League Jr. Robotics competition held at the Kenai Challenger Center. The team consisted of Jillyan White, Clara Moore, Tyla Moorleghen, Emily Pieh, Cierra Ritchie, Katie Creglow, Jadyn Vinzant, Paige Poole, Sarah Baktuit, and Ryann Cannava. The team will be advancing to the State competition in Anchorage.
With the Holidays comes our much awaited music programs. Our music teacher, Mr. Lohmeyer has done a fantastic job at putting together performances. The Primary Musical Program will be held in the gym December 8 at 6:00 p.m. All students in grades 1st through 3rd grade will be part of this fun filled event. Also, our Band and Choir Concert will be held on December 13 at 5:30 p.m. All are welcome and we look forward to seeing you.
Our Christmas Assistance Dinner Program is in full swing. The deadline for requesting assistance is December 9, however, donations for food items, laundry soup, or wrapping paper and bows are being accepted at the front office through December 14. We are estimating we will need 24-30 complete meals. Your donations are appreciated.
On December 15 students are encouraged to come to school wearing a t-shirt form a favorite place they visited or from another state or country. We will be visiting classrooms to see all the geographic spots we or our families have visited around the world.
Our Box Top winner last week was Tabor Pyhala, and our incredible staff member of the week was Katrina Cannava.

If you are artistic and want to show off your skills, create a title page for the SoHi yearbook. Winner gets a free 2011-2012 yearbook. The theme this year is “Silver and Blue, Who are you”? Your colorful artwork must be 8.5 by 11 or smaller to be eligible for the competition. You can enter digital artwork, but it must be high resolution. And don’t worry if you don’t win, because your artwork could be used elsewhere in the book. Please have all the artwork turned into Ms. Cox or Ms. Bartman by Tuesday, Dec. 13.

The Soldotna High School Child Development Course will be having a free daycare.  Children must be potty trained and age 2-5.  Child Development students will plan activities, snacks, and mentor children. Sohi will be having its annual Christmas Concert on Dec. 8 at 7:00 p.m.  Admission is $2 per person.

Soldotna Middle School
The SMS Holiday Canned Food Drive was a success!  Students and Staff brought in a total of 1,500 lbs of non-perishable food items that were donated to the Kenai Peninsula Food Bank. The Homeroom competition winners: Third Place – Mr. Rob Moore – 112 Items, Second Place – Mr. Dahl – 123 Items, and First Place – Mrs. Pillifant – 159 Items. Way to go Spartans.
