The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District Board of Education meets at 7 p.m. at 148 *. Binkley Street in Soldotna (unless otherwise noted).

Workforce development offers academies
The following after school academies are available for all local high school students and are free:
Plumbing Academy beginning Feb 6. at Soldotna High School with instructor Tyson Cox. This will be an introduction to care and use of tools, fittings and materials used in the plumbing and heating trade to safely transfer fluids and gases. Students will learn how to connect many types of pipe and tubing using proper techniques and fitting to specifically include copper, pex, ABS, and cast iron. Class days are Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30-6:30 thru April 23.
Emergency Trauma Technician (ETT) academy will be held at one of our local high schools (TBA) beginning after Spring Break and will run thru April. Class days will be Mondays and Thursdays from 3:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. and occasional Saturdays from 9-5. This course will cover all areas required to receive certification as an Emergency Medical Technician. The last week of class will be for review and the final exam. If you pass the exam you'll receive your certification and an ETT patch.
Introduction to Criminal Justice academy will be starting Feb. 7 at the Workforce Development Center and will end on April 19. Class days will be Tues. and Thurs. from 5-8pm. Students will learn all of the different careers in the criminal justice pathways: Probation Officer, Parole Officer, Police Officer, Dispatcher, Criminal Justice Technician and more.
Dental Assistant academy will be starting sometime in February at Skyview High School and will run thru April. Dates and times TBA. Students will learn the basics of being part of a dental healthcare team. The course will provide hands on experience in general dental office procedures including: scheduling, patient prep, dental hygiene and other aspects of assisting. Class size is limited.
There will be a construction academy coming up sometime after Spring Break in the Kenai and Ninilchik area. Dates and times TBA.
If a student successfully completes any of the 60-hour academies they are eligible to receive a half practical art credit.
Transportation may be provided if needed.

Funding for the Alaska Construction Academies comes from a grant from the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development, the Alaska Department of Commerce and Economic Development and The Alaska Youth First Program.

Cook Inlet Academy
If you have a business and would like to advertise while at the same time, supporting our athletic program, you can do so by purchasing a banner to be put up in our gymnasium. Applications are available at the office. First time fee is $250, which includes your new banner, as well as a season pass to the CIA sport of your choice, home games. Annual renewal is $150. Stop by the office, or give us a call, if you would like an application! We are making a push at this time to get some new banners up! If you know of anyone who might be interested in supporting our sports program in this way, please let them know asap!
Monday is Parent Night at 6:30 PM: 9th through 12th grade parents will receive your child's PSAT test results and learn how to "understand" the results in this meeting, so it is a very important meeting for you to plan to attend. Elementary through Jr. High parents will have a separate meeting this same night to go over vital things that pertain to your children.
There is a senior meeting for parents of seniors and seniors following the regularly scheduled Parent Night meeting.
Friday is the Jr. High Gym Party 6-8 pm. There will be movies (G & PG only), pizza, finger foods, video games (E rated only). We encourage Jr. Highers to bring your favorite board games/video games and extra controllers (with parental permission). This party is sponsored by the CIA Jr. High Student Council. If you have questions, please call Jr. high student council advisor, Jennie Hammond at 776-8561. Jr. Highers will be bringing home permission slips to be signed by parents and returned to a student council member by Jan. 23rd.
Feb. 2 and 3 Parent Teacher Conferences. Secondary parents, call the office now to sign up for a slot; first come, first serve! Elementary parents will be assigned times, and the schedule will come out this week.
There is no school Feb. 2 or 3 for 7th - 12th for parent teacher conferences.

Connections Home-school
The BOOK IT! K-6 Program has begun and we are happy to be a part of it. Spend just 20 minutes each day focusing on raising a reader. Set a monthly reading goal and when that goal is met , celebrate achievement by going to Pizza Hut and redeeming the BOOK IT! coupon for a personal pan pizza. Connections Homeschool is enrolled with the National Spelling Bee. All Connections students in grades 3-8 are encouraged to participate to build confidence, increase vocabulary and improve spelling skills.

IDEA Home-school
IDEA is currently accepting applications from families interested in home schooling their children for the 2012-2013 school year. To register go to and choose the register now button.
Join us at the office today, Jan. 23rd at 11:00 am for a FAFSA-Free Application for Federal Aid- workshop for parents of high school students. This application is necessary for scholarships and college applications.
Students in 5th and 7th grade will participate in Terra Nova Testing on January 31st. These nationally-normed tests provide parents with a snapshot of their student's academic levels. The tests begin at 9am each day so parents, please, have your child at the testing center by 8:454am. For more information please call 260-7555.
Registration is still available for the Book-It Program. This program sponsored by Pizza Hut encourages reading amongst K-6 th grade students by rewarding reading accomplishments with a personal pan pizza. Come by the office today and register to participate throughout the rest of the year.

Kaleidoscope School of Arts and Science
The Annual School Carnival will be held on Feb. 17. If you would like to help with this event please contact Jan Marquis at The PTA would like to provide the staff with food during Parent Teacher Conferences next week. If you would like to help, there are signup sheets in the parent room and on the PTA bulletin board. Check out the PTA website at for all upcoming PTA events.
The Kindergarten Winter Performance will be held this Thursday, Jan. 26 from 6-7 p.m. Be sure to come and enjoy a great program put on by our Kindergarteners.
There is a bass/cello concert in the gym at 10:45 for all students and you are invited to attend.
There will be Terra Nova testing for all 5th graders next week. Please make sure to have your students at school on time and well rested.
Parent Teacher Conferences will be held next Wednesday- Friday. If you need to make changes to your conference schedule, please contact your teacher as soon as possible. There is no school for students on Thursday and Friday of conferences.
Lottery applications for the 2012-2013 school year are being accepted now through March 2nd. If you have a sibling that will be enrolling next year, please make sure to stop by the office and fill out a sibling lottery application.
Re-enrollment forms were mailed last week. These forms must be turned into the office by February 3rd to guarantee your child a position at Kaleidoscope next year. If your child is not returning for any reason, please return the form with the back filled out.
New Parent Informational Meetings will be held January 31st at 6pm, February 18th at 10am and February 23rd at 8am. These meeting are for all current Kaleidoscope families that have not yet attended a meeting and for all new families that have entered the spring lottery.

Kalifornsky Beach Elementary
The K-Beach Student Council is sponsoring a Food and Blanket Drive from Jan. 16- Feb. 10. We need clean blankets, new or like new, and food that won't spoil and hasn't been opened. The food can be in boxes or cans. The food and blankets will help people in our community through the Kenai Peninsula Food Bank. We appreciate any support that K-Beach families can give us.
Kenai Middle School
Report cards were mailed out last week. If you haven't received your child's report card please call the office to confirm your address, 283-1700.
Every year at this time, I do an adolescent class with the 6th grade students through their physical education classes. Boys and girls are separately shown the movie "Who Am I Now?" which discusses body changes during puberty. I follow up with a discussion on hygiene. We don't go into sexuality, but encourage parents to do so at this time with their child. If you have any questions, please call Pam Howard at KMS (283-1700).
Kenai Middle School held their Geography Bee last week. Here are the results: 3rd place is Gavin Bennettr; 2nd place is Elizabeth Meyer, and the 2010 Kenai Middle School Geography Bee Champion is: Mikaela Salzetti - 1st place. Mikaela took a test that will be mailed into National Geographic Society Headquarters in Washington D.C. If she does well on this test, she will be invited to the State Geography Bee in Anchorage. Should she win there, she will travel to Washington D.C. to represent Alaska. Again, congratulations Mikaela, and good luck!
We are already four weeks into third quarter and will be holding second quarter parent-teacher conferences Thursday, February 2nd from 12:00am to 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Core teachers will be located in the gym and exploratory staff members will be in the cafeteria area. There will be no school for students on Friday, January 3rd because staff members will be involved in training and workshops.

Mountain View Elementary
Forensics Club for 3rd, 4th & 5th grade students will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. starting Jan. 5 until February 16th. Students need to have a signed permission slip and will need to be picked up promptly at 4:30 PM. Forensics is an opportunity for students to participate in public speaking. Nikiski North Star Elementary
This coming Thursday, Jan. 26 at 6:30 pm will be the NNS Family Science Night in the gym. NNS families are invited to participate in an evening of science experiments presented by NNS staff and the Challenger Learning Center. Our school spelling bee for third through fifth grade will be held on Thursday, January 26th in the library.
Congratulations to the 2012 NNS Geography Bee Champion Garrett Ellis! Garrett will take a qualification test, then based on the results of that test hopefully qualify for the state level of the geography bee. Coming in a close 2nd place was Alexia Paneak and 3rd place went to Martin Cox. The following students were classroom participants: Chase Longbotham, Amelia Johnson, Ethan Hack, Jacobee Anderson, Ian Davis, Cody Handley and Joey Yourkowski. Congratulations to all!

Redoubt Elementary
Redoubt PTA and Alaska Christian Ministries are co-sponsoring Practical Positive Parenting Workshops on Tuesdays, January 24 - March 6, from 6 - 8 PM, at Redoubt Elementary. Cost is $30 per family. Interested parents should call 252-9082 for more information and to register.
One School, One Book kicks off with an assembly on January 31. All Redoubt families and staff will receive a copy of this year's book, The Cricket in Times Square by George Selden, to read together at home. School activities, including trivia questions and prizes, will promote and enrich this school-wide shared reading experience. The grand finale will be A Cricket in Times Square Family Movie Night on February 23.  
Parent conferences are Thursday and Friday, February 2 and 3. There will be no school for students.
Teachers will send home conference schedule forms soon. Parents are asked return those forms as soon as possible to confirm or reschedule their conferences.
The lost and found will be emptied on February 3.
Big G Box Tops drawing winners were Quincy Miller, Macy McMahill, Spencer Hinnegan, Anna Mae Gilliam, Kyler Pritchett, Gavin Hanson, Cody Thompson, Chloe Newby, River Dawson, JD Newby, Brooke Belluomini, and Loretta Maal. PTA collects and redeems Big G Box Tops for our school. Students can write their name on the back of their box tops and put them in the collection box in front of the office to be entered in prize drawings.
Mark your calendar! Redoubt's spring musical, featuring 4th - 6th graders, will take place on Thursday, May 10, 6:30 PM, at the So Hi auditorium.
Families who need help acquiring winter outerwear for their children are asked to contact Nurse Donna.
Students go outdoors for recess unless the temperature, factoring wind chill, falls below minus 10 degrees. Students should always come to school dressed for the weather.

Skyview High
January Rotary Students of the Month are: Tiffany Allen, Kyle Austin, Marlee Cunningham, Holly Eyre, Natawni Hammack, Brittany Hollers, Amanda Hudson, Jeff Knott, Holly Ramsell, Victor Rodriguez, Michael Tucker and Chelsea Winter. They were treated to a pizza lunch on January 18, provided by the Soldotna Rotary Club.
Band students will attend Mass Band at SoHi today and tomorrow, with the concert beginning at 6 pm Tuesday.
Kenai Peninsula College's 22nd annual Career Day is scheduled for Friday, January 27, 2012 from 9:00-11:30 AM. Skyview will provide transportation for the any sophomores and juniors who are interested in attending sessions presented by local experts in the sciences, arts, businesses, trades and technology. This is a great opportunity for students to explore occupation in preparation for setting goals. See Mr. Andrews, Mr. Wertz, or Mrs. Madden to sign up. Permission slips are due on Tuesday, January 24th. The first 40 to turn in signed permission slips can attend.
All seniors who are considering college or technical training should fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at The FAFSA is your opportunity for federal grants, low-interest loans, and scholarships like the Alaska Performance Scholarship. College Goal Sunday, Kenai Peninsula College's guided session to help you complete the FAFSA, will be on February 12, 2012 from 2:00 - 4:00 pm.

Soldotna Elementary
We are keeping warm at Soldotna Elementary with many fun and exciting activities!
Fun Fest will be Friday, Jan. 27th from 3:30-5:30 P.M. The yellow sign-up sheets have been sent home, and the deadline to return forms is Jan. 23rd.
The next PTA meeting will be Feb. 9th at 3:45 in the library. Childcare is provided during the meeting.
Our lost and found is over flowing! Please take a moment to look for any missing articles of clothing that your child may have left at school.
Congratulations to Olivia Davis, the winner of last week's box top drawing! Continue to save those box tops! One intermediate class and one primary class with the most box tops will earn a party. The contest will run Feb. 1 thru Feb. 29. The weekly box top drawing will resume Mar. 2.
Parent/Teacher conference will be Feb. 2nd and 3rd; there will be no school for students on those days.

On Friday, January 27th, SoHi Sophomores and Juniors will be attending Career Day at KPC from 9:00-11:30. Students will be back at school in time for lunch. Permission slips and information packets have been distributed to students. All students must ride the bus. Please turn in your permission slip and session schedule to the Counseling office as soon as possible.

Tustumena Elementary
We held our Geography Bee with participants from 4th - 6th grade. Congratulations to Jeremy Kupferschmid our 3rd place finisher and JD Bragg our 2nd place finisher. Our winner was Cory Hinz and he will now complete a written exam to see if he qualifies for the state competition. Good luck Cory!
A phone message to all families testing our new phone messaging system was sent. If you did not receive this message please contact the school so we can verify the phone number we have listed for you. We will use this system in case of an emergency or if we have a school closure or delay.
January 23 -- Site Council Meeting, 4 p.m.
January 23 -- January 27 Pre-Registration for Kindergarten for the 2012-2013 school year from 9:30-11:30 /1:00-2:30pm. We will be having our kindergarten pre-registration the week of January 23-27. It may seem early but this is a very important part of our planning for next year. Packets have been mailed to families we are aware of that have a child of age to enter next year. Please take the time to fill it out and bring it in. Also, if you know of any families who have children eligible for next year that may not be aware of the registration time please let them know. Having the birth certificate and immunization records are helpful. Only those families that are registered receive an invitation to kindergarten visitation in May.
January 24 -- Our X-country skiing is about to begin. If snow conditions allow we are scheduled to begin on Tuesday January 24th. This is for students in grades 4-6 but younger students may participate if a parent also attends. We ski each Tuesday and Thursday from 4:00-5:30. There is a $5 fee which we use to help keep our equipment up. Students are welcome to bring their own skis or we do have most sizes available to loan.
February 2-3 -- Parent Teacher Conferences NO SCHOOL for Students. You should now have your Parent/Teacher Conference Scheduling Forms for conferences that will be held February 2nd and 3rd. These forms need to be back no later than the 27th of January so we can be sure to get everyone scheduled and notified of the proper visitation time. If you have not already done so please be sure to take time to respond, as these conferences are a very important part of communication about your child's progress.
