Late starting classes still available

Kenai Peninsula College

Posted: January 30, 2012 - 9:10am

The spring semester is fully underway at KPC’s Kenai River Campus but there are a number of courses that are still available for registration. These late starting classes are open up until the first day the class is held.

Want to learn more about one of the world’s most widely used languages? SPAN A201: Intermediate Spanish I will be starting at KRC on Wednesday, Feb. 1. The four-credit course is geared toward students who have a basic knowledge of Spanish and who are interested in enhancing their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. The class will be held from 6:30-8:30 a.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays and will be taught by Instructor Eva Canedo.

Creative Digital Camera, ART A103, is a one-credit course that introduces digital camera technology and techniques for the creation of photographic art. The course is web-based and offered via Elluminate Live, a software program that allows students and instructors to meet in real time online.

Students and instructors have both voice and text communication and instructors have the ability to provide PowerPoint presentations, demonstrate procedures in Photoshop and upload images and documents in the E-Live program.

The course is scheduled for 5-7 p.m. on Wednesdays beginning Feb. 8 and ending March 21. Students are required to have Photoshop or Photoshop elements (Adobe offers significant educational discounts for both applications @ www.adobe.com). Students need a digital camera with manual controls for shutter speed, f-stop and ISO, a headset with microphone and a computer with high speed internet access.

Learn to fly fish and be ready for next summer by enrolling in CED A133:Beginning Fly Fishing with instructor Dave Atcheson, author of Fishing Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula and coordinator of the Kenai Fishing Academy.

The one-credit course will be offered at 7:15-9:15 p.m. on Wednesday’s beginning on March 21 through April 25. The course introduces the basics of fly fishing, including selection of equipment, types of line, flies and techniques geared toward local lakes and streams.

Help bring world swing dance champion to the Peninsula
According to the KRC Swing Dance Club, there is a possibility that California-based, two-time World Swing Dance Champion, Ben Morris (http://benmorrisdance.com/about), would consider teaching a short workshop in the Kenai/Soldotna area if there is enough interest among students and the public.

Check out KPCSwingDanceClub’s Facebook page and like the club because Morris indicated that if the club can get 100 likes, he would come and provide a dance workshop.

UA Foundation scholarships due Feb. 15
The UA Foundation has approximately 50 scholarships, offering awards ranging from $500 - $8,000, available to students for the 2012-2013 academic year. All scholarship applications are due by Feb. 15
Students can apply online at UAOnline (uaonline.alaska.edu/), accessible from the KPC web site homepage, by choosing ‘Scholarships’ under the ‘Student Services’ menu and filling out the appropriate application. Detailed instructions related to online submission can be found at http://www.alaska.edu/foundation/donor_relations/scholarships/scholarship-application/.
