School board to meet
The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District Board of Education meets at 7 p.m. at 148 N. Binkley Street in Soldotna (unless otherwise noted).

Screenings for infants
and preschoolers scheduled
The KPBSD Child Find Program, Frontier Community Services Infant Learning & Kenai Public Health will be offering free screenings for children 5 years old and younger. The screening will be on Thursday, February 23, 2012 from 9:00 - 4:00 at Kenai Public Health, 630 Barnacle Way, Suite A.  We will screen your child's developmental skills, vision & hearing.  Immunizations are available upon request (please bring immunization cards). Workforce development offers academies
The following after school academies are available for all local high school students and are free:
* Introduction to Criminal Justice academy will be starting February 7th at the Workforce Development Center and will end on April 19th.   Class days will be Tues. and Thurs. from 5-8pm.  Students  will learn all of the different careers in the criminal justice pathways: Probation Officer, Parole Officer, Police Officer, Dispatcher, Criminal Justice Technician and more.  It's not too late to sign up.
* Emergency Trauma Technician (ETT) academy will be held at one of our local high schools (TBA) beginning after Spring Break and will run thru April. Class days will be Mondays and Thursdays from 3:30pm-6:30pm and occasional Saturdays from 9-5.  This course will cover all areas required to receive certification as an Emergency Medical Technician.  The last week of class will be for review and the final exam.  If you pass the exam you'll receive your certification and an ETT patch.
* There will be a construction academy coming up sometime after Spring Break in the Kenai and Ninilchik area.  Dates and times TBA.
If a student successfully completes any of the 60-hour academies they are eligible to receive a half practical art credit. Transportation may be provided if needed. To sign up contact your counselor or call Debbie Pearson at 283-2145 or email dpearson@kpbsd.org .
Funding for the Alaska Construction Academies comes from a grant from the AK Dept. of Labor and Workforce Development, The AK Dept. of Commerce and Economic Development and The AK Youth First Program.
 
Cook Inlet Academy
Saturday is family movie night with free popcorn and drinks and the movie, "Courageous" in the CIA Gym at 6:30 p.m. No charge; just a free night for the family! Invite your friends!
Our high school Student Council is planning a special Winter Wonderland evening for the high school students' winter banquet on Feb. 25th at Golden International Restaurant at 6 pm. There will be an "After Party" with games and pictures at the CIA Gym. Cost is $18 per person or $30 per couple. We will let you know when tickets are available.
School Science Fair on is Feb. 27th.
Regional basketball at CIA! Thank you for your continued support of Cook Inlet Academy Basketball. We are excited to be hosting the Peninsula Conference Region II Basketball Championship February 29th - March 3rd. We are looking for local businesses to advertise in our tournament program. If you are interested in supporting us, the following options are available: Back page- Full Color: $150.00, Full page: $100.00, 1/2 page: $75.00, 1/4 page: $50.00, Business card: $30.00. Current CIA Banner Sponsors will receive a $10.00 discount on any of the above options.
If you are a parent interested in putting a note for your "favorite player" in the Region Program that would be available too.

Gym banners. If you have a business and would like to advertise while at the same time, supporting our athletic program, you can do so by purchasing a banner to be put up in our gymnasium. Applications are available at the office. First time fee is $250, which includes your new banner, as well as a season pass to the CIA sport of your choice, home games. Annual renewal is $150. Stop by the office, or give us a call, if you would like an application!
 
Connections Home-school
The BOOK IT!  K-6 Program has begun and we are happy to be a part of it.  Spend just 20 minutes each day focusing on raising a reader.  Set a monthly reading goal and when that goal is met , celebrate achievement by going to Pizza Hut and redeeming the BOOK IT! coupon for a personal  pan pizza. Connections Homeschool is enrolled with the National Spelling Bee. All Connections students in grades 3-8 are encouraged to participate to build confidence, increase vocabulary and improve spelling skills.

IDEA Home-school
Enrollment is now open for families wishing to homeschool their children in 2012-13.  To investigate the benefits of enrollment with IDEA go to our web page at www.ideafamilies.org  or come by our office in the Red Diamond Center.
Families and friends of IDEA are invited to the President's Day Fun at the Kalifornsky Christian Center on February 16th from 1pm to 3pm. Students in grades K-6 will explore art, math, science and language arts around the theme of our US Presidents.  Call the office at 260-7555 for more information.
Congratulations to our IDEA School Spelling Bee winner: Brett Merrow!  We had several wonderful spellers participate in over 20 rounds of spelling.  Stephen Pearson is the runner-up and went head to head with Brett in the final seven rounds. Congratulations to our participants: Annika Castenholz, Megan Harden, Ruth Pearson, Nadia Davis, Caius Hagelund, Dominic Alioto, Julia Titus and Penelope Litzen.
Congratulations to Dominic Alioto for his great reading abilities.  He is part of the state wide IDEA team for Battle of the Books and will compete in the Alaska Battle of the books competition in Anchorage. Caius Hagelund and Nadia Davis were runners-up in their age brackets.  Reading rocks!
 
Kaleidoscope School of Arts and Science
PTA Update:  The PTA will meet this Thursday, February 16th at 4pm in the library. The Carnival is this Friday, February 17th.  Plan to come support our school and bring a friend or two! Volunteers are still needed; contact Jan Marquis at jankathleen@gmail.com if you are interested in helping. Mark your calendars for Bingo for Books Family Fun Night, March 22nd at 6pm and Staff Appreciation week, March 26th-30th.
Artist Shala Dobson will continue working with the students and teachers this week.  Shala will also hold a Parent Workshop at 9:15am on February 16th. She will be showing parents different ways to hang art work in the building and many other great art tips! This workshop is for parents only.  Don't forget that there will be an art reception on February 16th at 2:30pm to showcase all of the student's art created during the last two weeks. Please plan to attend!
New Parent Informational Meetings will be held February 18th at 10am and February 23rd at 8am. These meeting are for all new Kaleidoscope families that have not yet attended a meeting and for all new families that have entered the lottery.  School tours will be held at 10:30am every Wednesday during the month of February.  
Lottery applications for the 2012-2013 school year are being accepted now through March 2nd at 4pm.  If you have a sibling that will be enrolling next year, please make sure to stop by the office and fill out a sibling lottery application by that deadline.

Kenai Alternative High School

Kenai Central High
Parents: Tuesday, February 14 students will be pre-registering for next year's classes during advisory.  Students should be bringing home a course list of next year's classes.  Please help assist your child in filling out their schedule to make sure that they are challenging themselves academically.  The forms are due back to the student's advisory teacher signed on February 21st.
Attention all AP Students:  If you are planning on taking an AP exam in May, you need to sign-up and pay your fee by February 21st.  If you have any questions regarding test dates and fees, please see the counselors.
Congratulations to Bailey Beeson for making the All Tournament Team at the Dimond Lynx basketball tournament.
The physics class is looking forward to Officer Prins coming in to talk about Doppler Radar. The Earth Science class is going to have a guest speaker on avalanche safety coming later in February.

KCHS Skills USA students are preparing for the CTSO District Completions being held at Skyview and Soldotna High School next Thursday February 16th.  Some of the competitions are: Culinary Arts, Construction, Welding, Forklift, Job Interview and Employability Skills. Kenai Middle School
The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District is partnering with the Association of Alaska School Boards to conduct a survey of our students that measures school climate and student connectedness. This survey will be administered to students in 6th and 7th grade at Kenai Middle School and to certified and support staff during the week(s) of January 23rd. The survey measures student and staff perceptions of school climate, how peers treat each other, observations of student behavior at school, and connections between school and the community. The survey is voluntary, anonymous, confidential, and does not ask questions about students' families. The survey and a brochure describing its purpose and benefits to the district are available in Mr. Dosko's office if you wish to review them. Thank you!

Mountain View Elementary
The in-school Forensics competition will take place on Monday, February 20 at 1:00 PM in the Library. Those 4th and 5th grade students that are chosen to move on will compete in the district Forensics competition on March 3.
The Library will be holding a book fair February 22 -24.  If you would like to volunteer to help with the book fair please call the office at 283-8600.
We will be celebrating "Love of Reading" the week of February 20th - 24th with a variety of fun reading activities.     

Nikiski North Star Elementary
Congratulations to the January Character Counts! Students of the Month:  Rylee Ellis, Shyla Coplan, Michael Mysing, Zoey Ellis, Hope Broussard, Vanessa Lopez, Destiny Langston, Carly Johnson, Caleb Griffith, Danielle Elsey, Ryker Dukowitz, Kobe McCaughey, Raycee Daniels, Alek Angleton, Drew Handley, Triztin Henry, Kyle Malston and Cooper Stock.  These students were treated to a pizza lunch with Principal Callahan on Friday.
This morning at 8:30 am, the PTA is inviting Moms and their children to the gym for a Valentine's Day themed Muffins for Moms. On Friday, February 17th is Donuts for Dads beginning at 8:30 am.  Both of these events end at 8:50 am.  
February is Love of Reading Month and at NNS we are celebrating with the One School, One Book activity for families.  Our school wide book is Beverly Cleary's The Mouse and the Motorcycle.  We ask families to read the assigned chapter at home every night and discuss what happened in the chapter.  The following day, there will be trivia questions for both students and parents.  This is a great activity for families to enjoy at home.  If you need more information, please talk to your child's teacher.
Battle of the Books for 5th grade will take place in the library on Thursday, February 16th and the 3rd and 4th grade battle will be held on Friday, February 17th.  Both competitions begin about 9:00 am.  Good luck to all participants!

Redoubt Elementary
Students and staff celebrated another PBIS goal with a Sport Spirit Day last Thursday. Students and staff wore their favorite team, sport, or school shirts.  
Redoubt students and their families are busy reading this year's One School One Book selection,
 The Cricket in Times Square by George Selden. Students are participating in daily trivia questions and other school activities to promote the love of reading. The grand finale will be a Cricket in Times Square Family Movie Night on February 23.    
Mark your calendar! Redoubt's spring musical, featuring 4th - 6th graders, will take place on Thursday, May 10, 6:30 PM, at the So Hi auditorium.
Site council meets Feb 15th at 3:45 pm in the teachers' lounge.
Redoubt PTA  and Alaska Christian Ministries are co-sponsoring Practical Positive Parenting Workshops on Tuesdays, January 24 - March 6, from 6 - 8 PM, at Redoubt Elementary. Cost is $30 per family. Interested parents should call 252-9082 for more information and to register.

Skyview High
JV and varsity basketball teams host SoHi Tuesday, beginning at 3 pm.
Softball open gym will be in the upper gym Wednesday from 5:30-7:30 pm.
The district CTSO (Career and Technical Student Organizations) competition takes place at Skyview and SoHi Thursday.
Basketball hosts Kodiak Friday and Wasilla Saturday.
Skyview will host the borough ski meet Friday and Saturday.
Site Council meeting will be Monday, February 20 at 4:30 pm in the library.

Soldotna Elementary
Soldotna Wolves continue to have "paws"ative attitudes and activities!
Congratulations to Kallie Kenner for winning the school Geography Bee competition on Thurs., Jan. 10.  Brooke Tapia was runner-up.  Classroom competitions were held and the classroom winners were as follows:  Ms. Courtright's 4th Grade-Brody Reger and Dalton Hulsey;  Ms. Bobek's 5th Grade-Cheyenne Groff and Sam Skolnick; Mrs. Pettijohn's 5/6th Grade-Brandon Crowder and Joseph McLeod; and, Ms. Edward's 6th grade- Kallie Kenner and Brooke Tapia.  School winners across the United States will now take a written test; up to 100 of the top scorers in each state will be eligible to compete in their state Bee on Mar. 30, 2012.
Mrs. Courtright's 4th grade class was totally amazed and delighted with a once in a lifetime opportunity to see Disney's Beauty and the Beast at the Performing Arts Center in Anchorage on January 21st.  Students were inspired to write about their favorite character and compare and contrast the original video with the musical performance.  
Once again we've started our Reading Counts Contest for grades 2 through 6.  Students are reading books and taking comprehension quizzes for points.  The names of those students earning the most points per classroom each week will be announced on the following Monday morning.  The contest will end on Fri., May 4.  Prizes are awarded occasionally to individual winners in the classrooms.  There will be one Grand Prize winner per classroom, and those students will ride to Soldotna City Hall via a fire truck and will meet with Mayor Micciche where they will receive their reading certificates.  Back at school they will be served lunch in the library with Mrs. Diamond and Mrs. Adamson.  Congratulations to last week's classroom winners:  Rhys Cannava (Mrs. Baktuit), Jaala Lopez (Mrs. Davis), Colton Sorhus (Mrs. Straw), Joey Freeman (Ms. Buben), Auree Sorensen (Ms. Courtright),  Joseph McLeod (Mrs. Pettijohn), and Brooke Tapia (Ms. Edwards)!  
Valentine's Day is approaching. Our PTA will be sponsoring Valentine Candy Grams.  Please check with the school if you are interested in sending your student a special message.    
The next site council meeting is Tuesday, February 7th at 4:00 p.m. in the conference room. PTA will be holding a meeting on Thursday, February 9th at 3:45 in the library.  Childcare will be provided for the PTA meeting.  

Soldotna Middle
High School Designation for all 8th Grade Students is posted at the SMS Front Office.  If a student would like to attend a different High School than the one assigned, please contact the school at 260-2500.  The deadline for Out of Area Forms is February 28th.

Soldotna Montessori
Students in grades 3 through 6 will participate in a school Spelling Bee on Monday, February 13. The school winner will go on to compete in the State Bee in Anchorage.
Students in grades 4 - 6 are conducting a Hunger Project based on local hunger issues and solutions. Students will provide and informational booth at Safeway and Sav-U-More. Students will also be volunteering at the Food Bank. For their final project students will conduct a Hunger Banquet. Banquet guests will draw tickets at random that will assign them to a high, medium or low income based on the latest statistics about the number of people living in poverty. The 15% of high income participants will be served a lovely meal,  the 35 % middle income participants will be served a simple meal of rice and beans. The 50% of participants in the low income will help themselves to small portions of rice and water.
 
Soldotna High
SOHI's Battle of the Books team will be competing Monday, February 13th, against 7 other high schools on the peninsula! Good Luck to Jaide Briggs, Swan Brooner, Ila Cobb and Ali Dusek! Go Stars!
Soldotna High School is collecting gently used formal dresses, shoes, and accessories for 2012 Cinderella's Closet.  This is a program which helps all area high school ladies with prom attire for free.  Please email mbos@kpbsd.k12.ak.us for more info.  All donations can be dropped off to the front office 8am-2pm.
The KPBSD Federal Programs department is in the process of renewing and revising the Plan of Service for English Language Learners. Part of the process requires feedback from parents, teachers, and community. Tustumena Elementary
February 2-3 -- Parent Teacher Conferences NO SCHOOL for Students. You should now have your Parent/Teacher Conference Scheduling Forms for conferences that will be held February 2nd and 3rd. These forms need to be back no later than the 27th of January so we can be sure to get everyone scheduled and notified of the proper visitation time. If you have not already done so please be sure to take time to respond, as these conferences are a very important part of communication about your child's progress.
