School board to meet
The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District Board of Education meets at 7 p.m. at 148 *. Binkley Street in Soldotna (unless otherwise noted).

KBEA accepting scholarship applications for 2012
The Kenai Borough Employees Association Scholarship Committee is currently accepting applications for three scholarships of $500 each. The scholarships are available to all 2012 graduates of the Kenai Peninsula Borough (including public schools, private schools and home-schooled). Applications and instructions are available from any KPB high school counselors’ office or on the Borough’s web site at www.borough.kenai.ak.us. Applications must be postmarked by March 30. Applications can be mailed or dropped off at the KPB, KBEA Scholarship Committee, 114 North Binkley Street, Soldotna, AK 99669.

Workforce development offers academies
The following after school academies are available for all local high school students and are free:  
Emergency Trauma Technician (ETT) academy will be held at Workforce Development Center (which is located behind KCHS) starting Monday March 19th and will run thru May 3rd. Class days will be most Mondays and Thursdays from 3:15pm-6:15pm and occasional Saturdays from 9-5. This course will cover all areas required to receive certification as an Emergency Medical Technician.  The last week of class will be for review and the final exam.  If you pass the exam you’ll receive your certification and an ETT patch.
Construction academy for Ninilchik students will be starting March 30th thru April 28th. 10 hour OSHA Safety Course to be completed prior to Spring Break. Class days will be most Fridays 3:30-6:30pm and Saturdays 2-6pm.  Students will be constructing a shed.
There will be a construction academy coming up sometime after Spring Break at The Workforce Development Center.  Dates and times TBA.
If a student successfully completes any of the 60-hour academies they are eligible to receive a half practical art credit. Transportation may be provided if needed. Cook Inlet Academy
Gym banners. If you have a business and would like to advertise while at the same time, supporting our athletic program, you can do so by purchasing a banner to be put up in our gymnasium. Applications are available at the office. First time fee is $250, which includes your new banner, as well as a season pass to the CIA sport of your choice, home games. Annual renewal is $150. Stop by the office, or give us a call, if you would like an application!
We will be utilizing the Sycamore Calendar as our main way of communicating to you what is happening at CIA. There will still be a small amount of information coming to you via email, but our main source of communication will be the calendar. In order to see the calendar, you need to sign in to your Sycamore acct, and on the Home Page, click on “School” in the left hand column, and then click on “Calendar”. When the calendar opens, you can click on any event listed to see if there are more details given. There are so many important things listed on the calendar, and you won’t want to miss going there to find out what’s happening! CIA is such a busy place, and with a calendar that lists all events happening, we are hoping for less scheduling conflicts. Please make it a habit to check the calendar so you know what’s going on! If you need your username and password, please call the office! We know that this is all new, and anything new takes awhile to get used to, but we think it will make communicating much more effective overall. If you know people who are not a part of CIA, but who want to know our athletic schedule, please direct them to highschoolsports.net. All our games will still be posted there.

Connections Home-school
Attention K-6 students!!  The Iditiread Challenge is here!  Stop by the connections office to get your sled ready to hit the trail and read your way to Nome!  Contact the office with any questions.
The BOOK IT!  K-6 Program has begun and we are happy to be a part of it.  Spend just 20 minutes each day focusing on raising a reader.  Set a monthly reading goal and when that goal is met , celebrate achievement by going to Pizza Hut and redeeming the BOOK IT! coupon for a personal  pan pizza. The 2nd Annual “Connections Home School’s Got Talent Show” will be held April 19th at 5:30pm, and rehearsal will be April 18th around 4:30-5:30pm.  Acts of all types will be permitted, however, since this is a family show, all talent show material must be appropriate for all ages – any questionable content will not be allowed.  For anyone interested in participating in this event, please fill out the Entry Form, available at the Soldotna office.  Be sure to read the instructions carefully and fill out the form completely.  We will accept forms that are mailed in, dropped off, emailed, or faxed (must be signed).  Deadline for entry forms is March 15th.  If you have any questions please contact Mark Wackler at 714-8880 or email mwackler@kpbsd.k12.ak.us.
Connections Homeschool is enrolled with the National Spelling Bee. All Connections students in grades 3-8 are encouraged to participate to build confidence, increase vocabulary and improve spelling skills.

IDEA Home-school

IDEA students join Iditaread and read your way to Nome.  This fun reading program follows mushers along the Iditarod Trail as you the reader try to read your way to Nome before your musher arrives.  Prizes are included and an Iditaread packet is available for your enjoyment.  Call Omie at 260-7555 for more information.
IDEA students and family members register now for the Alyeska Trip on March 19. Students receive discounted lesson prices and everyone receives discounted lift tickets for this fun day on the slopes.  Call the office or check your email for more information.

Kaleidoscope School of Arts and Science
Tonight is the Treasure of Sound night. The night will begin with the 5th and 6th grade Stomp performance at 5:30pm. Then the 3rd and 4th grade classes will perform their plays. Mrs. Stroh’s class will perform at 6:00pm, Mrs. Darch’s class will perform at 6:30pm and Mr. Knudsen’s class will end the evening with a 7:00pm performance. All of the classrooms will have sound projects on display and there will be sound experiments for everyone to try!
Gently used books for the Bingo for Books Family Fun Night are currently being collected in the library.  Bingo for Books will be held March 22nd at 6:00pm in the school gym. This is a great night to meet other Kaleidoscope families and get some books!  The next PTA meeting will be March 19th at 6:00pm. Staff Appreciation Week will be held March 26th-30th. Watch your Friday Folders for volunteer opportunities during this week.
The APC will meet today at 4:00pm in the school library. School Surveys are due back to the school this Friday, March 9th. Please take a few minutes to fill out the survey; it is a great source of feedback for the APC board.
This is the last week for After School Activities. All activities will meet Tuesday and Thursday from 3:45-4:45pm.
The end of the quarter is March 9th. There is no school that day as it is an inservice day.  Spring Break is March 12th-16th. Enjoy your break!

5th and 6th grade students had a wonderful educational experience snowshoeing at the refuge!  
Mrs. Bagley has postponed the Jump Rope for Heart Assembly schedule for Thursday, March 8th .  Instead, we are very excited to end the 3rd quarter with a performance by Skyview students on March 8th at 1:30 in the gym.
K-Beach students will be celebrating the end of the 3rd quarter at Jumpin Junction on March 7 or 8th.

Kenai Central High
Spring athletes will be finally able to spring into action as softball, track and field, and soccer practices start Monday.  Students wanting to participate in Spring Sports must have a current physical, turned in all the required paper work, and pay their dues before they can participate in any sport.  
Friday, March 9th is the end of the quarter/Teacher Inservice Day.  Spring Break will start March 12 for the students and school will not resume until March 19.  Have a safe and relaxing break!
On Wednesday March 7th at 6:00pm Kenai Central High School, Skyview, and Nikiski are having the first bi-annual SST Competition at Skyview.  Students from all three schools that are enrolled in weightlifting classes will be battling each other in a variation of Crossfit Games competing in various power lifts or endurance exercises.

Kenai Middle School
There is no school on March 9th due to a teacher in-service. This is also marks the end of 3rd quarter.

April 20th is a snow make-up day for all Kenai Middle students and staff. School will start at the same time, 7:45am and will end at 2:27pm.

Nikiski North Star Elementary
Congratulations to the Character Counts! Students of the Month for February:  Hana Tibbets, Dylan O’Brien, Sam Berry, Trevor Williams, Christina Beringer, Brody Farrow, Bryce Dedrick, Emma Lakin, David Hadella, Angela Drusedow, Samantha Perry, Braeden Porter, Athena Henry, Ethan Ellis, Jacolynn Hightower, Brooke Abel, Koleman McCaughey and Emily Hufford.  These students were treated to a pizza lunch with Principal Callahan on Friday.
We have had two very important events take place at NNS.  We had over 350 people attend our family science night and over 175 attend our One School, One Book movie night celebration.  Thank you to Brianna Redfern and Jessica Pena for all of their work organizing science night and to Monica Heath for putting together staff and parents for our book celebration.  A big thank you to Travis and Samantha Moore and Tammy Freeman for the fabulous cake depicting our book theme.  It was enjoyed by all!
There will not be school this Friday, March 9th because of teacher inservice. Also, there will not be school March 12-16 because of Spring Break. We wish everyone a safe and enjoyable break!

Redoubt Elementary
2012-13 pre-registration forms for current students were sent home last Friday.
Students should return their form by March 8 in order to be registered for next school year.
Wednesday is Hat Day. Students and staff are invited to wear their favorite hat to school.
Families of 6th graders are invited to a parent information night at Soldotna Middle
School on Wednesday, March 7, at 6:30 PM. Information about next year’s programs for 7th graders will be presented.
Congratulations to Liam Selden, our school Geography Bee champion. Liam completed the qualifying exam and qualified to represent Redoubt at the state level of the National Geography Bee in Anchorage on March 30.   
Redoubt is participating in the Healthy Futures Challenge. Participation is free and children win prizes for being active. The amount of activity is doable for every family – at least 30 minutes a day, 3 days per week. Contact Mr. Withrow for more information.  
Yearbooks are for sale for $15 and will arrive in May. A limited number of yearbooks will be available. Pre-order to reserve your copy.
2012-13 Title I Pre-Kindergarten Program applications are available at the school office and website.  Pre-kindergartners must by 4 years old by Sept. 1 and live in the Redoubt attendance area. Parents who apply will be contacted this spring to schedule an initial assessment for the program.  
New student registration will take place April 2 – 6 from 9 AM – noon. This registration is for all students who will be new to Redoubt this fall, including kindergartners. Kindergartners must be 5 years old by Sept. 1, ; a birth certificate is required. Immunization records are required for all new students. New students must reside within Redoubt’s attendance area.

The SoHi Drama Department will present the play Sherlock Holmes and The Portal of Time on March 29-31. Cost is $5.
Good Afternoon – this is The Parents of Juniors After Prom Committee asking for your help. We have less than 7 weeks to organize the after prom activities and are in need of donations for the celebration to happen.
