KBEA accepting scholarship applications for 2012
The Kenai Borough Employees Association Scholarship Committee is currently accepting applications for three scholarships of $500 each. The scholarships are available to all 2012 graduates of the Kenai Peninsula Borough (including public schools, private schools and home-schooled). Applications and instructions are available from any KPB high school counselors' office or on the Borough's web site at www.borough.kenai.ak.us. Applications must be postmarked by March 30. Applications can be mailed or dropped off at the KPB, KBEA Scholarship Committee, 114 North Binkley Street, Soldotna, AK 99669.
Workforce development offers academies
The following after school academies are available for all local high school students and are free:
Emergency Trauma Technician (ETT) academy will be held at Workforce Development Center (which is located behind KCHS) starting Monday March 19th and will run thru May 3rd. Class days will be most Mondays and Thursdays from 3:15pm-6:15pm and occasional Saturdays from 9-5. This course will cover all areas required to receive certification as an Emergency Medical Technician. The last week of class will be for review and the final exam. If you pass the exam you'll receive your certification and an ETT patch.
Construction academy for Ninilchik students will be starting March 30th thru April 28th. 10 hour OSHA Safety Course to be completed prior to Spring Break. Class days will be most Fridays 3:30-6:30pm and Saturdays 2-6pm. Students will be constructing a shed.
There will be a construction academy coming up sometime after Spring Break at The Workforce Development Center. Dates and times TBA.
If a student successfully completes any of the 60-hour academies they are eligible to receive a half practical art credit. Transportation may be provided if needed. Funding for the Alaska Construction Academies comes from a grant from the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development, the Alaska Department of Commerce and Economic Development and The Alaska Youth First Program.
Cook Inlet Academy

We will be utilizing the Sycamore Calendar as our main way of communicating to you what is happening at CIA. There will still be a small amount of information coming to you via email, but our main source of communication will be the calendar. In order to see the calendar, you need to sign in to your Sycamore acct, and on the Home Page, click on "School" in the left hand column, and then click on "Calendar". When the calendar opens, you can click on any event listed to see if there are more details given. There are SOOOOO many important things listed on the calendar, and you won't want to miss going there to find out what's happening! CIA is such a busy place, and with a calendar that lists all events happening, we are hoping for less scheduling conflicts. Please make it a habit to check the calendar so you know what's going on! If you need your username and password, please call the office! We know that this is all new, and anything new takes awhile to get used to, but we think it will make communicating much more effective overall.
Standard Based Assessments and High School Graduation Qualifying Exams will be held on April 3, 4 and 5. Science testing for grades 4, 8 and 10 will be held on Tuesday, April 10th. Students in grades 3-10 are required to be at these state mandated exams. Practice tests are available in the Connections office.
Reminders - Deadline for placing orders with Connections is March 30, 2010. This includes opening new Vendor Direct Payments for materials and services. Deadline for submitting reimbursements is April 30th.
Please note that we are not able to make any exceptions to this date.

Kaleidoscope School of Arts and Science
Staff Appreciation Week is March 26th-30th. Please plan to participate by providing a "Random Act of Kindness" for our staff on Tuesday, March 27th. We are asking volunteers to converge on the school to provide acts of kindness. This can be anything from a simple "Thank You" note, helping in a classroom, etc. Volunteers must have a background check and training complete. Please arrange childcare for younger siblings. Potluck items are still needed for Thursday, March 29th. Please contact email@example.com if you would like to provide a dish.

KCHS is continuing the after school study hall. Students will be able to utilize the study hall from 2:30 - 3:30, Monday - Thursday. The KCHS Drama Club Spring Play is this week. The drama club will be performing The Dining Room by A.R. Gurney on March 30 and 31 at 7:00 p.m. and April 1 at 3:00 p.m. at the Renee C. Henderson Auditorium. Admission is $5.00 at the door or advance tickets can be purchased from a cast member. The play has 18 interwoven scenes set in an upper-middle-class dining room from the early 1900's to the present time. There are over 50 characters between the ages of five and eight-five are portrayed by 14 performers: Ariana Gabriel, Krystal Hamman, Elan Krull, Ericka Reynolds, Liberty Rohn, Mariah Schloeman, Stephanie Sholley, Makai-Lynn Smith, Melanie Wortham, Shawn Fortune, Brad Hamilton, Kendrick O'Rourke, Jonathan Pedginski, and Jonathan Torkelson. Please come watch this awesome performance.

April 20th is a snow make-up day for all Kenai Middle students and staff. School will start at the same time, 7:45am and will end at 2:27pm.

On Thursday, April 12th, 2012 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. KMS will be hosting an open house/activity night for all new students and parents. In addition, 7th and 8th grade parents are cordially invited to attend to an orientation that evening to learn more about the upcoming school year. New students and parents will have a chance to experience different school activities and tour the building. You will have an opportunity to meet members of the staff and to learn more about the programs being offered at KMS. Please make plans to attend because we need your support and input to meet the needs of our students.

Family Math Night is scheduled for Thursday, March 29 from 5:00 - 6:30 at Mountain View. Explore the wonders of math with your children! Let them show you what they are learning! A variety of activities and math centers will be hosted by teachers offering different math games. Special math activities and ideas that can be used at home will be available, too! Please plan to come to an evening of family fun and learn through our parent/school partnership. If you would like to pre-order a pizza dinner for your family please complete the order form and return to the office with payment by Tuesday, March 27.
Title I is able to purchase for their families the Family Pizza Combo for the March Math Madness school event on March 29th. Parents please fill out the form in your child's Friday folder and return to school no later than Tuesday, March 27. Call 283-8600 if you have any questions.
The fifth grade classes will be holding a garage sale on Saturday, March 31 from 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM in the gym at Mountain View. This is a fundraiser for the 5th grade Kenai Fjords Marine Science field trip. If you would like to donate items for the sale or if you would like to rent a space and sell your own items, please call the office at 283-8600.
SBA Testing will take place Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (April 3rd, 4th, and 5th) for 3rd - 5th grade students. This assessment measures your student's proficiency in reading, writing, math, and science. Here are a few ways you can support these efforts at home:
Make sure your child gets a good night's sleep.
Eat a good breakfast.
Be on time to school. Testing will begin at 9:15 AM. We will have an alternate plan for those students arriving late.
These tests are not timed. Students will have as much time as they need to complete the test each day.

Spring pictures will be taken on Monday, April 16. Every student will be photographed and photos will be sent home at a later date. If you choose not to purchase the photos you may return them to school.

March is Music in our Schools month. The classes of Mrs. Heath, Mr. Jones, Mr. Zinck and Mrs. Zinck will perform together at our annual Evening of the Arts Concert on Thursday, March 29th at 7:00 pm in our school gym. Guest musicians from the Nikiski community will perform and you'll hear the fifth grade band perform under the direction of music teacher Rosemary Pilatti.
Applications for the 2012-13 Pre-Kindergarten Program are available at the Nikiski North Star office now! Children must be four years old by September 1, 2012. Parents should submit their completed application to the NNS office by April 20th to be scheduled for a Pre-Kindergarten screening.
All current students should return a pre-registration form in order to be enrolled for next school year. Forms were sent home prior to spring break and are available at the office.
Redoubt is participating in the Healthy Futures Challenge. Participation is free and children win prizes for being active. The amount of activity is doable for every family - at least 30 minutes a day, 3 days per week. Contact Mr. Withrow for more information.
Redoubt 4th graders are selling See's Candy to raise money for their spring field trip.
A large number of candy items are available for immediate delivery. Candy can be purchased from any 4th grader or by contacting Mrs. Withrow or Mrs. Walter at the school.
Yearbooks are for sale for $15 and will arrive in May. A limited number of yearbooks will be available. Pre-order to reserve your copy.
2012-13 Title I Pre-Kindergarten Program applications are available at the school office and website. Pre-kindergartners must by 4 years old by September 1, 2012 and live in the Redoubt attendance area. Parents who apply will be contacted this spring to schedule an initial assessment for the program.
New student registration will take place April 2 - 6 from 9 AM - noon. This registration is for all students who will be new to Redoubt this fall, including kindergartners. Kindergartners must be 5 years old by September 1, 2012; a birth certificate is required. Immunization records are required for all new students. New students must reside within Redoubt's attendance area.

On April 3-5 students will be testing days for most students. All freshmen will be taking the Standards Based Assessment tests and all sophomores and those juniors and seniors who have not passed one or more of the High School Graduation Qualifying Exams will be taking those tests. All students are expected to attend classes each afternoon:

Spring is on the way and with that brings a very busy time for students and staff.
Our school is continuing to participate in "Jump for a Cause." We are currently accepting donations for non-perishable items for the Kenai Peninsula Food Bank. Donations can be dropped off at the school office through the end of March, and we will deliver them to the food bank.
Our Dr. Seuss celebration was a great success. We so appreciate all the help from our PTA and our incredible teachers. Dana Cannava made an incredible cake, and Vidya Oftedal and Debbie Adamson ensured every child had a new book to take home. We also had a variety of community members who volunteered their time to promote a love of reading. It was a great success.
We are also currently accepting orders for Yearbooks. Please check the back of our Sentinel Newsletter for ordering early and receiving a discount. It is a memory in the making!
Our Reading Counts program continues and students are gobbling up books. Our winners last week were Taryn Lathrop, Tytus Gilbert, Josh Pieh, Colton Johnson, Severin Shangin, Jimmy Freeman, Carson Brown, and Emily Pieh. Great job to all of our incredible readers!
We had 3 of our students place in our District Forensics Meet. They were Rachel Davidson taking first place, and Kealay Hendricks and Brooke Tapia taking third. Congratulations!
The Drama Department will present the play "Sherlock Holmes and the Portal Of Time," March 29-30-31 at 7 PM. Admission $5 per person.
Cinderella's Closet will be open 3/27 and 3/29 from 2:30-4:30 in room 9. This program is open to students at all area high schools. It is a free program to provide local ladies with prom attire. In the past two years, we have helped over 200 ladies. We are in great need of gently used formal attire, shoes, and accessories. Please drop these items off to the main office.
The Parents of Juniors After Prom Committee is asking for your help. We have less than 7 weeks to organize the after prom activities and are in need of donations for the celebration to happen. Can we please count on you to donate $10 or $20 dollars to help offset the cost? We could also use prizes, chaperones, and snacks for the celebration. Track and Field begins today! Practice is from 2:15 - 4:00 pm. All students need to be picked up by 4:15 pm. All students must have a Hold Harmless form, Concussion form and participation fee received by the front office. SBA Testing for ALL 7th and 8th Grade students will be April 3, 4, 5. If you know your student will be absent from school any or all of these days, please contact the front office at 260-2500 as soon as possible to make arrangements for alternate testing dates.
Soldotna Montessori Charter
The Axiom Brass Band performed in an all-school assembly on March 23. Students from Soldotna Elementary and Soldotna Montessori attended the performance.
Second and third grade students will begin studying marine habitat in preparation for their overnight trip to the Seward Sea Life Center this Spring. Students in grades 4 - 6 will conduct water quality tests and other tests indicating the health of a stream habitat at Soldotna Creek Park on March 27, 28, and 30.
The SMCS enrollment lottery will be conducted on site on March 29 at 4 PM by the firm of Mikunda and Cottrell.
Registration for incoming Kindergarteners and Preschoolers for the 2012-13 school year will be held March 26th through March 30th, with a kindergarten visitation on Thursday, March 29th from 10:00 to 11:00. Please RSVP for the Kindergarten Visitation by calling Mrs. Mahan at the office @ 262-4944.
Congratulations to our Borough Forensics Competitors! Kathryn Ellis, Bailey Lundell, Carter Mahan, Hans Hesse, Jode Sparks, Quincy Balluta-Trefon, Kami Diehl, John Holland, Colter Landeis, Kami Martin, Sean McMullen, Ethan Bott, and Joshua Shuler. With practice and preparation, our students represented Sterling Elementary and took home many ribbons during the Borough Forensics Tournament, where they competed against students from around the district.
Sterling's Battle of the Books Teams Rock! Our 3rd/4th grade team, Gracie Bass, Jacob McConnell, Nicholas McConnell, and Tanner Ussing placed 4th in the Borough competition. Our 5th/6th grade team, Jode Sparks, Kami Martin, Sarah McConnell, and Hans Hess placed 1st in the Borough Competition and tied for 6th place in the Statewide competition.
Parent Input forms and attendance forms were sent home in last week's Thursday folders. Parents please take a moment to fill out these two important forms and return them to the office. The parent input form is used to help determine the best placement for your student for next year and the attendance form is to help ensure your child's cumulative file gets to the correct school for next year. Forms are due Friday, April 13th at 4:00.
