School board to meet
The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District Board of Education meets at 7 p.m. at 148 *. Binkley Street in Soldotna (unless otherwise noted).

KBEA accepting scholarship applications for 2012
The Kenai Borough Employees Association Scholarship Committee is currently accepting applications for three scholarships of $500 each. The scholarships are available to all 2012 graduates of the Kenai Peninsula Borough (including public schools, private schools and home-schooled). Applications and instructions are available from any KPB high school counselors’ office or on the Borough’s web site at www.borough.kenai.ak.us. Applications must be postmarked by March 30. Applications can be mailed or dropped off at the KPB, KBEA Scholarship Committee, 114 North Binkley Street, Soldotna, AK 99669.

Community service earns college scholarships
The Soldotna Rotary Club will be offering several $1,000.00 scholarships to graduating seniors from Connections Home School, Cook Inlet Academy, Skyview, Soldotna, and Ninilchik High Schools.
Again this year the Soldotna Rotary Scholarships are based on the Rotary Motto of “Service Above Self.” Recipients will be selected based on community service performed by the applicant during their high school career. Applications are available at school councilors or the office of Foster Construction. Applications must be received by April 16 2012. Grade Point Average or parental financial information is not required.

Workforce development offers academies
The following after school academies are available for all local high school students and are free:
Construction academy for Ninilchik students will be starting March 30th thru April 28th.  Class days will be most Fridays 3:30-6:30pm and Saturdays 2-6pm.  Students will be constructing a shed.
There will be a construction academy coming up sometime in April at The Workforce Development Center.  Dates and times TBA.
If a student successfully completes any of the 60-hour academies they are eligible to receive a half practical art credit. Transportation may be provided if needed. Funding for the Alaska Construction Academies comes from a grant from the AK Department of Labor and Workforce Development, The Ak Dept of Commerce and Economic Development and The AK Youth First Program.

Cook Inlet Academy
* Parent night is Monday at 6:30 PM.
* There will be no school on Friday, April 6.
* School wide SAT’s be held the week of April 9th.
* Preschool/K1 Visitation for prospective families will be held at 1PM on April 16th.
* Annual Spring Carnival will be held on Friday, April 20th at 6PM.
We will be utilizing the Sycamore Calendar as our main way of communicating to you what is happening at CIA. There will still be a small amount of information coming to you via email, but our main source of communication will be the calendar. In order to see the calendar, you need to sign in to your Sycamore acct, and on the Home Page, click on “School” in the left hand column, and then click on “Calendar”. When the calendar opens, you can click on any event listed to see if there are more details given. There are so many important things listed on the calendar, and you won’t want to miss going there to find out what’s happening! CIA is such a busy place, and with a calendar that lists all events happening, we are hoping for less scheduling conflicts. Please make it a habit to check the calendar so you know what’s going on! If you need your username and password, please call the office! We know that this is all new, and anything new takes awhile to get used to, but we think it will make communicating much more effective overall.

Connections Home-school
Standard Based Assessments and High School Graduation Qualifying Exams will be held on April 3, 4 & 5.  Science testing for grades 4, 8 & 10 will be held on Tuesday, April 10th.   Students in grades 3-10 are required to be at these state mandated exams.  Practice tests are available in the Connections office.  
Spring Scholastic Buy One Get One Book Fair will be held on April 9-13.  Stop by and get your books for summer reading!!!  
Reminder – Deadline for submitting reimbursements is April 30th.  Please note that we are not able to make any exceptions to this date.

Kaleidoscope School of Arts and Science
The PTA will hold a Kids-In- Nature workshop Wednesday, April 4th at 6pm. This is a great event for the whole family! The PTA is currently accepting nominees for all Board positions.  Please submit nominations to ksaspta@gmail.com, 394-1802 or in the PTA mailbox. Nominations must be received by April 13th. Position descriptions can be viewed on the PTA website www.ksaspta.com. Please contact Jaime Maly if you have any questions. The next PTA meeting will be held Thursday, April 19th, at 4pm. Election results will be announced and the new Board will be seated for the 2012-2013 school year.
The APC will meet on April 10th at 6pm. The APC Board members for the 2012-2013 school year will be announced at the April meeting. School survey results will be tallied and reviewed as well.
SBA testing for 3rd through 6th graders will be held this week on April 3rd, 4th, and 5th.  SBA Science testing for 4th graders only is on April 10th. Please plan to have your child in school on those days. For any questions or concerns involving testing dates please contact the office at 283-0804.
End of the year field trips are planned and permission slips have been sent home. Please remember all forms must be turned in 48 hrs prior to the activity. Also remember to make sure you have your volunteer training and background check completed and cleared by the office well in advance of your scheduled volunteer time or activity.

Kalifornsky Beach Elementary
SBA testing will begin next week for grades 3-6.  
K-Beach students and staff enjoyed the performance of the Axiom Brass Quintet from Chicago and want to thank the Performing Arts Society for scheduling this performance.
Kindergarten visitation for next year’s incoming students will be held Friday, April 13th from 12:15 – 1:15 or 1:15 – 2:15.  Parents can call the office at 260-1300 to schedule a time for their preschooler to “come to school” for an hour while parents meet with the principal and pre-register.  Parents will need to bring the student’s immunization record and birth certificate.   Thank you.
We are looking forward to our Artist in Residence coming, Liz Siskowic from California. Students in all grades will receive art lessons that will integrate the writing and art!  Liz will be with us for 6 weeks!!!

Kenai Central High
All freshmen and sophomores will be taking the State Standards Based Assessment test and/or the High School Qualifying Exam on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday-April 3-5.  The school will be on a special test schedule for those three days.  It is important that students testing get a good night sleep and eat a healthy breakfast before they take the state test.  Juniors and seniors should not arrive at school before 11:00.

Kenai Middle
April 20th is a snow make-up day for all Kenai Middle students and staff. School will start at the same time, 7:45am and will end at 2:27pm.
SBA testing is April 3rd, 4th, and 5th. Please make sure your child attends school those days and is well rested. KMS will be providing a pancake breakfast those three days. Thank you for helping us prepare your student for SBA’s!  
On Thursday, April 12th, 2012 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. KMS will be hosting an open house/activity night for all new students and parents.  In addition, 7th & 8th grade parents are cordially invited to attend to an orientation that evening to learn more about the upcoming school year.  New students and parents will have a chance to experience different school activities and tour the building. You will have an opportunity to meet members of the staff and to learn more about the programs being offered at KMS. Mountain View Elementary
SBA Testing will take place Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday (April 3rd, 4th, & 5th) for 3rd – 5th grade students.  This assessment measures your student’s proficiency in reading, writing, math, and science.  Here are a few ways you can support these efforts at home:
Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep.
Eat a good breakfast.
Be on time to school. Testing will begin at 9:15 AM.  We will have an alternate plan for those students arriving late. These tests are not timed.  Students will have as much time as they need to complete the test each day.

Spring pictures will be taken on Monday, April 16.  Every student will be photographed and photos will be sent home at a later date.  If you choose not to purchase the photos you may return them to school.
Applications are available for the 2012-2013 Mountain View Pre-K Program.
Screenings will be held at the Kenai Cultural Center on April 20. In order to be considered, a child must be 4 years old by September 1, 2012 and have a completed application returned to Mountain View Elementary. Screenings will be scheduled when applications are brought back to the school. For information please call 283-8600.

Congratulations to Rylee Jackson and Verity Feltman on their 3rd and 5th place showing in last month’s online math competition hosted by Sumdog.com. Together they answered over 1,500 math questions correct leading the Nikiski team to a second place showing overall, with the team answering over 19,000 problems correct over the week-long event.

Culinary arts academy
The Nikiski HS Culinary Arts Academy concluded on March 3 with a four course banquet at the school for family, friends, and district employees. For eight week students in the academy obtained Alaska Food Worker Card, completed 60 hours of professional culinary instruction, and hosted the banquet. The following Nikiski students earned high school practical art credit for the Foods 1 course: Natasha Nix, Heather Kaser, Marissa Oehler, Venessa Sullens, Melissa Roza, Rosabeth Donor, and Patrick Sterling. The instructors were Marilee Johansen and Gary Wiebel with assistance from Julie Carr.

Nikiski North Star Elementary
SBA testing is this week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for third through fifth grades.  We want to emphasize to all of our families how important it is every day and especially during testing time that our students get a good nights sleep, eat a good breakfast and get to school on time.
Title I Pre-K applications are now available at NNS or you may go online at www.kpbsd.org and click the Pre-K link to obtain the information.  Prospective students must be 4 years old by September 1, 2012.  Your screening appointment will be made when your application is received by the school.  A free screening determines Kindergarten readiness for your child.  NNS screening will be on Friday, April 27th at the North Peninsula Rec Center.  Please call the school at 776-2600 for more information.

Redoubt Elementary
Students in grades 3 – 6 will be taking SBA (Standards Based Assessment) tests this week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Students can do their best work on test days and every day when they eat a healthy breakfast and arrive at school well rested and on time.
New student registration will take place this week from 9 AM – noon daily.
This registration is for all students who will be new to Redoubt this fall, including kindergartners. Kindergartners must be 5 years old by Sept. 1; a birth certificate is required. Immunization records are required for all new students. New students must reside within Redoubt’s attendance area.
2012-13 Title I Pre-Kindergarten Program applications are available at the school office and website.  Pre-kindergartners must by 4 years old by Sept. 1 and live in the Redoubt attendance area. Parents who apply will be contacted this spring to schedule an initial assessment for the program.  
Fun Fest is Friday, April 13, from 3:30 – 5:00. Permission slips will be sent home this week. Students must return their permission slip and $4 by the morning of Fun Fest in order to attend.
Third graders are selling Scentsy products through April 9 as a fundraiser for their Sea Life Center field trip. Products can be ordered from any 3rd grader or 3rd grade teacher, or by contacting Melanie Leete at 260-6955 or 394-0675.
Yearbooks are for sale for $15 and will arrive in May. A limited number of yearbooks will be available. Pre-order to reserve your copy.

River City Academy
SBA Student Testing will take place April 3-5. The district mandates that all students take this test so it is imperative that your student attends school those dates. Also please make sure your student gets plenty of rest, eats a healthy breakfast, and arrives to school on time.

Skyview High
Site Council meets today at 4:30 in the library.
Most students will be testing the mornings of April 3-5. All freshmen will be taking the Standards Based Assessment tests and all sophomores and those juniors and seniors who have not passed one or more of the High School Graduation Qualifying Exams will be taking those tests.  All students are expected to attend classes each afternoon:

Soldotna Elementary
The warmer weather and sunshine have Soldotna Elementary buzzing with excitement.

State SBA testing for grades 3-6 will take place April 3, 4 & 5.  Please help your students to do their best during testing week by seeing that they have a nutritious breakfast, a restful night’s sleep, and an extra hug!  Please have students arrive at school on time ready for the day.
The kindergartners have been working hard on their upcoming music program.  Mrs. Vasilie’s class will be performing in the music room at 12:30pm, and Mrs. Evenson’s class will perform at 1:00pm.  Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy the music!

The SOHI Chapter of SkillsUSA did fantastic at the CTSO Performance Based Assessment Conference last week! Are you interested in seeing the prom decorations before the big dance?  Would you like priority seating for promenade to make sure you get the “good” seat you want?  Well, here’s your opportunity.  The After Prom Committee is sponsoring “SNEAK A PEEK” for this year’s promenade.  Tickets may be purchased for $5 a person starting April 2nd.  This will get you a tour of the prom decorations and 4early seating in the auditorium before the doors are opened to the general public.  To take advantage of this you MUST arrive between 6:50 and 7:10pm.  Doors to the general public will open at 7:15pm and we cannot guarantee your seating after that.  General admission to the promenade is a suggested donation of $2 per person.  Please note:  There are only 225 tickets  available for the “Sneak a Peek”.  Tickets may be purchased at the front office of Soldotna High School during 8am – 2:30pm.
Prom 2012
The junior class is once again hosting Soldotna High School’s Junior/Senior Prom on April 14, 2012, in the SOHI commons.  The junior class has chosen the theme of “I Love New York” and will follow a city theme. This is a formal event and students are asked to dress accordingly.  Decorating will take place on Friday, April 13.  All junior parents and students are encouraged to come and help with decorating.  Tickets will be $25 per person for the prom, and they will go on sale beginning in early April.  Tickets MUST be purchased in advance and will not be for sale at the door.  Tickets will be for sale during lunch or are available through the office during regular school hours. Magic Moments will be on site that evening for photo sessions.  More information will be forthcoming on the price for the different packages.  
Promenade will take place in the Soldotna Auditorium starting at 7:30 pm.  Doors will open at 7:15.  All students who wish to participate in promenade must be here no later than 7:15pm.  General admission to the promenade is a suggested donation of $2.00 per person to help defray the decoration costs.  If you have any questions, please contact Chris Hanson or Heather Swanson  at 260-7000.
There will also be an AFTER-PROM party held at Soldotna Middle School following prom.  Doors will lock at midnight, and the party will last until 2 am.  
Good Afternoon – this is The Parents of Juniors After Prom Committee asking for your help. We have less than 3 weeks to organize the after prom activities and are in need of donations for the celebration to happen. Can we please count on you to donate $10 or $20 dollars to help offset the cost? We could also use prizes, chaperones, and snacks for the celebration. Part of the process requires feedback from parents, teachers, and community. Soldotna Middle
SBA testing for all 7th and 8th grade students is Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.  If your student is absent any of these days, please contact the school at 260-2500 to make arrangements for alternate testing dates.
The final Site Council Meeting of the 2011-2012 school year is Monday, April 9 @ 4:30 pm in the SMS Library.

Sterling Elementary

Congratulations to our Borough Forensics Competitors! Kathryn Ellis, Bailey Lundell, Carter Mahan, Hans Hesse, Jode Sparks, Quincy Balluta-Trefon, Kami Diehl, John Holland, Colter Landeis, Kami Martin, Sean McMullen, Ethan Bott, and Joshua Shuler. With practice and preparation, our students represented Sterling Elementary and took home many ribbons during the Borough Forensics Tournament, where they competed against students from around the district.
Sterling’s Battle of the Books Teams Rock! Our 3rd/4th grade team, Gracie Bass, Jacob McConnell, Nicholas McConnell, and Tanner Ussing placed 4th in the Borough competition. Our 5th/6th grade team, Jode Sparks, Kami Martin, Sarah McConnell, and Hans Hess placed 1st in the Borough Competition and tied for 6th place in the Statewide competition.
Parent Input forms and attendance forms were sent home in last week’s Thursday folders. Parents please take a moment to fill out these two important forms and return them to the office. The parent input form is used to help determine the best placement for your student for next year and the attendance form is to help ensure your child’s cumulative file gets to the correct school for next year. Forms are due Friday, April 13th at 4:00.

Tustumena Elementary
We would like to congratulate Cory Hinz who was notified that he has passed the test in order to compete at the state Geography bee. He was our school winner but had to also take an exam to advance to state. Good luck Cory!
We would also like to congratulate our Future Problem Solving team of Delaney Risley, Chance Turvin, Selby Hill, and Timothy Blakely. They have received an invitation to the state bowl.  First place teams from the state bowl will be invited to the International competition competing with students from around the world. We know they will do great!

* April 12 Preschool Visitation, 11:30-12:30 We will be holding a pre-school visitation on April 12th from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This will be a chance for parents and students to see the classroom and do a project with Mrs. Granger while I meet with parents to explain the program and the  selection process for next year. Parents need to have completed an application prior to coming to the visitation.  We will only be able to accept 10 students into the program for next year so please be sure to get your application in now and let others know who may not be connected with our school yet.
