School board to meet
The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District Board of Education meets at 7 p.m. at 148 N. Binkley Street in Soldotna (unless otherwise noted).

Masonic Awards night planned
On Friday, at 6:30 p.m. at Kenai Central High School in the Renee Henderson Auditorium, the 45th Annual Outstanding Student of the Year Awards will be presented by the Kenai Peninsula Masonic Lodges, Seward Lodge No. 6, Kenai Lodge No. 11 and Sterling Lodge No. 22. This is the first year all three lodges have officially participated in the event, however members form all the lodges have supported and contributed since its beginning.
This year we are honoring 30 students from 28 schools on the Kenai Peninsula. Honored students will receive a cash award to be announced, an Outstanding Student of the Year certificate from our lodges and a certificate from the Governor's office a personalized plaque for their home and a name plate to be placed on the Honor Awards plaque located in each school. At least three $1,000 scholarships, two to local students one to a student from the Nome area, will be presented.

Builders accepting scholarship applications
The Kenai Peninsula Builders Association (KPBA) is currently accepting applications for the 2012 Shelby Johnson Memorial Scholarship. Up to three $1,000 scholarships will be awarded. Scholarships are available to 2012 Kenai Peninsula Borough School District graduates, including private and home-schooled students. Applicants must plan to attend school within the state of Alaska, and be pursuing a building-related career. Applications are available from any high school guidance counselors' office, on the KPBSD website, and on the KPBA website (www.kenaipeninsulabuilders.com). Application deadline is May 1. Scholarships available for students statewide
The Alaska Community Foundation is notifying current and incoming college students statewide of several scholarship opportunities available for a variety of study areas and student types, many of which have deadlines for application in the coming weeks.

* The Frank and Carol Pinkerton Scholarship
The Frank and Carol Pinkerton Orchestral String Instrument Scholarship is available to all Alaska high school seniors committed to obtaining a college or university degree in music education with an emphasis in string instruments. The Pinkertons created the scholarship to ensure that future generations have the resources to pursue music careers as educators. The scholarship helps cover the cost of tuition, musical instruction or other musical expenses and may be renewed up to three times, totaling four years, provided there is sufficient funding.
Criteria: Applicants must be in good academic standing with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 and be enrolled full-time by the beginning of the semester in which the awarded funds are to be used.
Deadline to apply: May 1, 2012.
Amount: up to $1,500
* Shelly Szepanski Memorial Flight Scholarship
The Shelly Szepanski Memorial Flight Scholarship was founded in remembrance of Szepanski, a wildlife biologist, outdoor enthusiast and passionate pilot. The scholarship assists women earning their private or commercial instrument flight ratings who are pursuing flying as a part of a science-related degree program.
Criteria: Interested applicants must have passed the Federal Aviation Administration written flight test and medical exam and be enrolled in a science related degree program. Awardees from the previous year are eligible to apply.
Deadline to apply: June 15, 2012
Amount: up to $5,000

Community service earns college scholarships
The Soldotna Rotary Club will be offering several $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors from Connections Home School, Cook Inlet Academy, Skyview, Soldotna, and Ninilchik High Schools.
Again this year the Soldotna Rotary Scholarships are based on the Rotary Motto of "Service Above Self." Recipients will be selected based on community service performed by the applicant during their high school career. Applications are available at school councilors or the office of Foster Construction. Applications must be received by April 16 2012. Grade Point Average or parental financial information is not required.

Workforce Development Center
Construction Career Day comes to Soldotna Sports Center on May 1. This is an exciting opportunity for high school students to explore the diverse careers related to the construction industry. Hands on: Welding, Surveying, electrical Wiring, Drilling and much more. All high school students are encouraged to attend. Please see your counselor to sign up.
There will be a Summer Welding Academy at Skyview High School. Dates and times TBA. Students will be constructing a 20-foot aluminum car hauler trailer. This academy is available for all local high school students and is free. If a student successfully completes the 60-hour academy they will receive a half practical art credit. Transportation may be provided if needed.

Funding for the Alaska Construction Academies comes from a grant from the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development, The Alaska Department of Commerce and Economic Development and The Alaska Youth First Program.

Kaleidoscope School of Arts and Science
New Parent Informational meetings will be held today at 6 p.m. and May 2 at 8 a.m. These meetings are for all families new to Kaleidoscope this year, plus all families that have gone through our lottery, who have not yet attended a meeting. Please choose the one that works best for your schedule and plan to attend.
On Friday we will honor our volunteers with a Volunteer Breakfast at 8 a.m. Child care will be provided. If you have volunteered at Kaleidoscope this year, please plan to attend this fun event!
The 5th and 6th grade Spring Concert will be held May 1 at 7 p.m. in the KCHS auditorium. The students will be bused over to KCHS the morning of the concert for dress rehearsal. They will leave at 9:15 a.m. and return to the school at 11:30 a.m.
Kindergarten visitation and New Student registration will be April 30-May 4. For more information please contact the office at 283-0804.
The APC will hold their last APC meeting for this school year on May 7 at 4 p.m. in the school library. Parents are welcome to attend.

The Kenai Animal Shelter is in need of: heavy duty rubber toys (such as Kong brand), puppy chow kibble (dry), and new puppy collars. Our student council will be collecting donations for them. Please bring your items to room 17 between 7:30 and 8:00 a.m. Donations will be accepted through May 1.
If you missed Kindergarten Visitation, it is not too late to pre-register for next fall. Please stop by the office and sign up.
 
Kenai Central High
The junior class would like to thank all of the parents and business that donated items and time to help make this year's prom and after prom event a huge success.
The student council and leadership class is currently taking applications and petitions for next year's Executive Board Office positions. If you are interested in running for an E-board position, please see Mr. Carr. Petitions and applications are due April 23rd.
Seniors, the executive officers are currently accepting photos for the senior slideshow that will be shown during the graduation ceremony. Please send all of your photos to Ms. Wagoner.

Kenai Middle School
As this year draws to a close we are planning our annual mini-course program and award day activities. Our annual eighth grade farewell will be held May 18 at 8:00 a.m. in the gym. Mini courses will be held on May 21 and May 22. The school-wide barbecue and awards assembly will be held on May 23.
Congratulations to the KMS 6th grade quest students. The competition included entries from elementary, middle, and high school students. Our 6th graders won second place overall! A huge congrats to Brittany Gilman who edited the movie for us. Ithaca Bergholtz also starred in a second movie in collaboration with Kaleidoscope School of Arts and Sciences. That movie took first place. Way to go Ithaca and KMS.
Congratulations to all 23 KMS students who travelled to Homer on April 13 to compete in the district's Middle School Math Meet. Everyone did a great job. We had several students come home with ribbons.

Mikaela Salzetti placed in the top twelve and was fourth in the "Sprint" round. David Beck placed in the top twelve and was second in the "Target" round. Drake Thomas took first in all divisions and was the overall champion. Congratulations to all of these math students and their teachers.

Mountain View Elementary

Nikiski North Star Elementary
The Hershey Track and Field Meet will be held on May 18 at Nikiski High School. Today is the deadline for registration. Entry forms can be found at NCRC, NNS or the Nikiski Pool. Volunteers are needed for this event and if you can help, please call Tammy at 776-8800.
Kindergarten registration and orientation will be held Tuesday. We are offering two different times for your convienence. You may attend at either 9:30 - 11:00 or 1:00 - 2:30. If your child will be five years old by Sept. 1, 2012, bring them along to have some fun while you enroll them at NNS. Don't forget to bring immunization records, birth vertificates and any legal custody papers. If you need more information, please call the school at 776-2600.
Pre-Kindergarten applications are available at the front office and online at the NNS website. Children must be four years old by Sept. 1, 2012 and screened to determine if they qualify. Screenings are scheduled for Friday. Appointments for the screenings will be made when you return your application to the NNS office. After the screening, parents of students who qualify will be contacted by the Pre-K teacher, Ms. Pala. You may contact the school office for more information.

Redoubt Elementary School
As part of the school's PBIS program, Redoubt students and staff had Hawaii Day last Tuesday to celebrate our respectful, responsible and safe students.
Parents are invited to provide input into their child's classroom placement for the coming school year by completing the form available at the school office and on the school website. Forms are due by May 4.
The Buy One, Get One Free Book Fair will take place April 30 and May 1. Students will have an opportunity to shop during their regular library time.
Redoubt band students will perform on May 1, 6-7 p.m., in the gym.
A parenting workshop, Bully-proofing your Child through Conflict Resolution Skills, is being offered by Lisa Schmitter, school guidance counselor, on May 3, 6-8 p.m., in the school library. The workshop is free and childcare will be provided.
Redoubt 4th-6th graders will present their spring musical on May 10, 6:30-7:30 p.m., at the Soldotna High School auditorium.
2012-13 Title I Pre-Kindergarten Program applications are available at the school office and website. Pre-kindergartners must by 4 years old by Sept. 1, 2012 and live in the Redoubt attendance area. Parents who apply will be contacted this spring to schedule an initial assessment for the program.
Mrs. Caston's kindergarten class needs 500 empty, clean milk jugs (with lids) for a class project. Donations will be greatly appreciated.

River City Academy
The Students at RCA will be presenting an Open House May 3 at 6 p.m. for parents, students and community members who would like to learn more about the school. RCA offers students Performance-Based Education, Individual Student Placement and Progress, Tracking,  Student Centered Classrooms, Leadership Skills and Community Outreach, and Technology Embedded in Curriculum.

Soldotna Elementary
Spring is in the air and Soldotna Elementary has a flurry of activities and learning happening.
Spring Pictures will take place on Tuesday. Note: This is a date change.
Parent Input forms went home for parents to provide information to maximize their child's learning experience for the 2012/2013 school year. The forms are on the back of the Sentinel, and need to be returned to the office by 4 pm Friday.
Funfest is also on Friday from 3:30-5:30. PE classes during the day will participate in a "Jumping Gym" from Jumping Junction. Soldotna Elementary student received a coupon for being 2nd in the food drive for the Peninsula Food Bank.
Site Council Meeting will be held on May 1 at 3:45 in the conference room. This will be the final meeting of the year. PTA will be held May 10 at 3:35 in the Library. Please come! All are welcome.
We will be celebrating our volunteers at a luncheon in the Library on Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. We are very fortunate to have all the wonderful support from our community and families.
The last Title One Pizza/Game Night will be held Tuesday from 5:30-6:00. Our students have worked hard this year, and families will be able to check out games to enhance their learning at home. All Title families are welcome and invitations went home.
Last week's Box Top winner was Kruize Livingston. Thanks for your contributions and hard work Kruize! Our Reading Counts winners were Wyatt Stout, Landri Johnson, Abby Rodgers, Olivia Davis, Cierra Ritchie, Shannon Yeskie, Mariah Parnell, and Emily Noblin.
This is the last week for our Aluminum Can Round-Up. Please bag those cans and drop them off at the school for recycling by April 27th, 2012.

Soldotna High
Student council will be hosting Homegoing Week. Dressup days and activities are schedule for the week. Monday is College Day, Tuesday is Neon/Sparkle day, Wednesday is Twin Day, Thursday is Flashback and Friday is Spirit Day.
Soldotna High School's National Honor Society Students of the Month for March and April are: Chemistry - Juliet Bramante; AP Calculus - Phoebe Napolitano; U.S. Government- Mariah Ulen; Russian II - Timber Haselow, Yearbook - Sebastian Gabriel ; LA 10 - Emily Axtell; LA 10 - Shae Vanmeter; Health - Emily Glaves ; PreCalculus - David Swedberg ; PreCalculus - Heidi Westerman; World History- Julie Litchfield; Art - Cecile Goblet; Culinary Arts - Michaela Gioachini. They were honored at a pizza luncheon in the SoHi commons on Wednesday April 18th at noon.
The Soldotna High School Child Development Course will be having a free daycare. Children must be potty trained and age 2-5. Child Development students will plan activities, snacks, and mentor children. The daycare will run May 10-11 from 12:15-2:15. Parents must pre-enroll their children. Part of the process requires feedback from parents, teachers, and community. Soldotna Middle School
Hannah Pothast is selected as Soldotna Middle School's Masonic Outstanding Student of the Year. Hannah is recognized for her strong character strengths, her 4.0 GPA for the last two years, her active involvement in co-curricular activities, her leaderships qualities, and her volunteerism with school and community projects. Congratulations, Hannah!
The April 7th-Grade Soldotna Chamber of Commerce Student of the Month is Brenna Belluomini. She will be honored for her achievement on Tuesday, April 24, at the Chamber Luncheon at Froso's Restaurant at noon. Congratulations Brenna!
Mass Choir Festival -- Tuesday, Kenai Central High School Auditorium, 6 pm. This festival features students from all around the District. SMS will have 65 students participating. Admission is $4 adults, $3 students, $10 family.
Final Fortnightly for this school year is Friday. It will feature our 8th-Grade talent show. Parent volunteers are needed! Please contact the school at 260-2500 if you are able to attend.
The SMS Track Meet scheduled for April 19 was rescheduled. The Nikiski Track Meet scheduled for April 28 has been cancelled.

Soldotna Montessori Charter School
Next week, 4th-6th graders will participate in their annual Indoor Camp Week. Students will spend the morning each day working on the activity of their choice: dance and hip hop, graphic and fiber arts, or small construction projects. These students will go to Nikiski Pool on Friday afternoon. They will go to Jumpin' Junction on April 30 at 10 a.m. Parent chaperones are needed for both field trips. Contact the school office if you are interested in being a chaperone.
Twenty-four 5th and 6th grade students depart for New York City next week for their trip to the Montessori Model United Nations Conference. The conference is held, in part, at the United Nations Building in New York City. These students will be acting as delegates for the nations of United Kingdom, India and Germany.
Students in grades one through three learning how to be safe when using the internet on the computer. Lessons include the importance of never giving out personal information of any kind on the internet and always communicating with a parent or trusted adult about online safety.
Mrs. Holt's class will visit the Soldotna Landfill today to celebrate Earth Day. They will be checking out what they can do to help recycle in our community. Drivers are still needed for this short afternoon trip.
Swimming lessons begin for all sixth graders on May 1 though May 11. Students will take the bus to SoHi daily after lunch.

The Study
The Study, which provides educational tutoring services for students and families and is accredited by the Northwest Accreditation Commission, would like to recognize the following students for reaching their reading goals this month: Sammy Baker, Connor McBride, Anna Cizek, Gabriel Shockley and Connor Shockley.

Tustumena Elementary
Our PTO is a vital part of our school. As such we need our community to be involved. Each year we hold elections for officers that guide the organization throughout the year. If you would be interested in serving with the PTO please contact me or PTO President Corrine Johnston to have your name placed on the ballot.
Our 6th grade is beginning the transition process for middle school. Next week they will begin using a class schedule that requires them to go to their lockers and get the materials needed for the next class in 3 minutes. Next week they will also have a visit from the Soldotna Middle School counselor and then on May 4th they will have an opportunity to visit SMS.
Pull out your calendars and mark them for May 1st. That evening at 6:29 we will have our Spring Band concert and talent show. Also that evening we will complete our auction and declare the winners of each item. If you haven't bought your tickets for the auction yet don't wait any longer, send them in now. Another set of tickets and an item list are again attached to the newsletter.
