Posted: April 23, 2012 - 9:14am

A week into public registration for fall, class sections continue to fill up and close. Although the pace of enrollment is lagging slightly behind the same time last year, as the snow melts, enrollments are trending up daily. The fall semester will begin Aug. 27.

Summer semester registration is also open and students can register up until the first day of the class. Some courses are offered in a condensed, five-week block.

Register for KPC classes at UAOnline from the KPC website homepage. For more information, call KRC Student Services at 262-0330 or e-mail iyinfo@kpc.alaska.edu.

Faculty member receives international recognition forE-Learning course development
Susan Mircovich, KRC assistant professor of chemistry, had her CHEM A103 online course selected as an exemplary course for the 2012 Blackboard Exemplary Course Program. Mircovich is the first University of Alaska faculty member to have a course selected for this international recognition. Over the last 11 years, an average of 10 courses was recognized annually.

Blackboard is the software platform that KPC/UAA uses as the primary learning management system that faculty and students access to administer and access course materials for both face-to-face and online classes. More than 9,300 educational institutions around the world utilize the Blackboard platform.

According to the Blackboard, Inc. website, the aim of the program that began in 2000 is to help faculty use E-Learning technology more effectively by identifying and disseminating best practices for designing engaging online courses.

As an exemplary course winner, Mircovich will receive a complementary pass to the Blackboard World conference to be held in New Orleans later this year and will be honored at the Catalyst Award luncheon.

KPC's upcoming commencement ceremonies
Both the Kenai River and Kachemak Bay campuses are busy planning the annual graduation exercises. After years of hard work and dedication, Kenai Peninsula College graduates will don gowns and mortar boards with tassels and proudly walk across stages to receive degrees, certificates and GED diplomas conferred by the UA Board of Regents.

The Kenai River Campus will hold its 42nd commencement ceremony at 7 p.m., May 15, at Kenai Central High School's Renee C. Henderson auditorium. KRC chooses valedictorians from the two major academic divisions at the college. David Duncan, graduating with his general business associate of applied science degree, is the Business & Industry valedictorian, and Melissa Humphrey, earning her associate of arts degree, is the Arts & Sciences valedictorian.

The Kachemak Bay Campus will celebrate its 30th commencement ceremony at 7 p.m., May 9, at Homer High School's Mariner Theater. The KBC valedictorian is Charlene Flyum, graduating with her associate of arts degree.

Textbook buyback at KRC
Every semester students look forward to the opportunity to sell back the text books they purchased for the classes they have recently completed. By selling back books still in use in KPC classes, two things are accomplished; the used books are sold to students the following semester at a reduced rate and the sale of the books puts cash back in students' pockets.

The book buyback begins April 30 and continues through May 11 from 10 a.m.-noon and 1-3 p.m. daily. For more information, contact the KRC Bookstore at 262-0312.
