Another school year in the books

Verbatim

Posted: April 30, 2012 - 7:58am

Well, this is it, my last verbatim column for the rest of this school year.

I would like to start off this column by giving a big thank you to Mr. Morrow. Thank you so much for this opportunity to have a chance to write for your newspaper and express my views about certain topics. I hope you continue having this column next school year. I would like to encourage the rest of the high-schoolers that read this column to consider writing a piece next year. You guys have opinions too, and you need to be heard.

I am also grateful for all the men and women that have served and are serving our country to make it where we can say what we think without fear of being thrown into prison, or killed.

I was having a hard time coming up with something to write about this time, so I decided I would write about some of the priveleges I was allowed to have when I turned 16, along with the new responsibilities that came with those priveleges. First off, I wanted my driver's liscense, but I soon found that you don't just drive for free. I have to pay for insurance and gas.

Thankfully I am getting pretty good grades so my insurance rates aren't what they could be, but I still had to figure out how to pay for it. Right before I turned 16, the Nikiski Pool had a lifeguard training course that I was able to take, and a couple months later, I was hired on.

I also wanted to have my own vehicle. My papa had a friend who needed help with a bunch of stuff at his house, he also had an '82 Dodge pickup that ran good and only needed a little work done on it.

Anyway, he offered to trade it for 150 hours of work, so now I have two jobs that I will be doing this summer, but I sure don't intend to work my whole summer away.

Anyway, I think that's about it for this article. Have a great summer everybody.

John Boatright is a home-schooled sophomore who lives in Nikiski.
