KPC summer programs reach decade mark

Posted: April 30, 2012 - 8:50am

There's still time to reserve seats in KPC's unique summer programs, the Kenai Fishing Academy and the Kachemak Bay Writers' Conference. Both programs have developed strong followings, attracting repeat attendees every year.

The Kenai Fishing Academy, administered from KPC's Kenai River Campus in Soldotna, teaches fishermen to be better anglers. Although all the seats in the 2012 bait casting course have been filled for some time, there are still seats available in the fly fishing session that runs from July 29-Aug. 3. Visit the KFA website at kenaifishingacademy.org for more information or call KFA Coordinator Dave Atcheson at 907-262-0346.

The Kachemak Bay Writers' Conference will be held June 8-12 at Lands End Resort in Homer. The keynote speaker this year is National Book Award winner, Barry Lopez. There is a registration discount through May 4. For more information and to register for the conference, visit http://writersconference.homer.alaska.edu/ or call 907-235-7743.

Kenai River Campus construction update
KPC Construction Manager Phillip Miller calls it a "nervous, dull drone period for us right now," in terms of visible movement on KRC's housing and Career and Technical Center projects.

"But everything is moving along as expected on the two projects. The CTC bid period was set to close on May 1, but has been extended by a week to May 8. This is not unusual for large projects and there are lots of projects on the street at this time of year.

"The bid documents for the housing project will be released on May 1 and the project is scheduled to open for bidding on May 22," Miller said.

Kenai Peninsula College Council seeks members
Kenai Peninsula College is seeking interested community members to serve on its College Council. The borough-wide council serves as an advisory board to the college director and advocates for the interests of the college to the community and legislature. Members serve three-year terms.

According to Marge Hays, representing the central Peninsula in her second term and current vice chair of the Council, this is a great time to be involved with the college.

"Right now, with the new student housing and Career and Tech Center being built at the Kenai River Campus, it's very positive to see the college growing as it is. Being a council member gives you the opportunity to freely provide input on issues affecting the college. It is a good group to work with and we are all totally committed to the college," Hays said.

People interested in serving should submit a letter of interest and resume by May 4 to: College Director, Kenai Peninsula College, 156 College Rd., Soldotna AK 99669. Those selected will be seated at the 6 p.m., Sept. 13 council meeting at the Kenai River Campus in Soldotna. Interested individuals with questions can call 262-0318.
