Scholarships available for students statewide
The Alaska Community Foundation is notifying current and incoming college students statewide of several scholarship opportunities available for a variety of study areas and student types, many of which have deadlines for application in the coming weeks.

* Shelly Szepanski Memorial Flight Scholarship
The Shelly Szepanski Memorial Flight Scholarship was founded in remembrance of Szepanski, a wildlife biologist, outdoor enthusiast and passionate pilot. The scholarship assists women earning their private or commercial instrument flight ratings who are pursuing flying as a part of a science-related degree program.
Criteria: Interested applicants must have passed the Federal Aviation Administration written flight test and medical exam and be enrolled in a science related degree program. Awardees from the previous year are eligible to apply.
Deadline to apply: June 15, 2012
Amount: up to $5,000
Partnership to donate test materials
The eKnowledge company, along with partners from various professional sports, announced a Sponsorship Alliance Program which offers SAT and ACT PowerPrep programs throughout the 2011-2012 school year. The programs come as a DVD and includes more than 11 hours of video instruction and 3,000 files of test prep material (test questions and practice tests). The eKnowledge Partnership waives the complete retail price for the basic program. There is a fee of $17.55 for materials, shipping and customer support for the standard programs. Workforce Development Center
There will be a Summer Welding Academy at Skyview High School starting May 29 to June 7. Classes will be on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Students will be constructing a 20’ aluminum car hauler trailer.
This academy is available for all local high school students and is free. If a student successfully completes the 60-hour academy they will receive a half practical art credit. Transportation may be provided if needed.

Families are invited to our spring track meet on May 24th at the Skyview Track. Children from kindergarten through high school are welcome to compete in running events and the long jump. Bring water bottles and wear your running clothes to enjoy an evening of fun.
Graduation ceremonies for all IDEA high school graduates will be held on May 25th. Everyone is welcome to attend and congratulate the graduating class of 2012. Alaska Performance Scholarship Awards will be announced in June for all qualifying seniors.
Kaleidoscope School of Arts and Science
There will be no breakfast served this week. Thank you to Love INC and all of the volunteers that worked with the breakfast program this year.
The Kaleidoscope Bike Rodeo will be held today and tomorrow. Officer Alex Prins, from the Kenai Police Department, will be here to teach bike safety today for grades 1-4. On Tuesday, May 22, the 1-6 grade classes will ride their bikes on an outdoor safety course. There will also be an all school barbecue from noon to 1 p.m., sponsored by the KSAS PTA and the Moose Lodge. Nurse Jane Fellman from CPH will be here all day to fit and sell helmets for $5 to students, including kindergarteners.
Don’t forget that May 23rd is the last day of school for students! There will be an all school sing-a-long from 10:30 to 11 a.m. After the sing-a-long, students will head to the Kenai Beach for lunch. Every class has their own schedule for that day.
No hot lunch will be served on May 22 and 23. The barbecue is provided on the 22nd and students are to bring a sack lunch for their trip to the beach on the 23. Please be sure and repay the lunch fund in the office for any lunch money that was borrowed throughout the school year. Bright pink notices have been sent home weekly if your child has borrowed.
Mark your calendars for August 20. We will have our back to school night starting with an APC meeting at 4 p.m., Open house at 5 p.m. and the Back to School BBQ at 6 p.m. The first day of school will be August 21. Please call the school as soon as possible if your plans for next year change.

Kenai Central High School
Monday, May 21 at 6 p.m. is Kenai Central High School’s annual Awards Night Ceremony to recognize our students’ academic success. The Awards Ceremony will be held in the Renee’ C Henderson Auditorium. If you have any questions, please contact Patti Lawyer at the KCHS Counselors Center.
Congratulations to all of the seniors. Graduation practice is Monday, May 21st at 7:45 a.m. All seniors that are panning on walking during the ceremony later that evening need to be at practice that morning. The Graduation Ceremony will start at 6:30 p.m. in the Renee’ C Henderson Auditorium.

“Swing Into Summer” with the KCHS Jazz Band and the Lyon’s Pride Jazz Band on Saturday, May 16th 8 to 11 p.m. at the KCHS Auditorium. Live swing dance with two jazz bands! Tickets are $10 per person; available at the door.
The “Be a Ham” Fashion Pageant, put on by members of the junior class, was a rousing success. After reading To Kill a Mockingbird (especially the scene where Scout dresses up in a ham costume), students created “hams” out of found/recycled items before parading them to a panel of judges. Students had to keep an inventory of all donations, create a fashion plate, and write a speech for their model’s runway walk. All costumes were creative, well-designed, and left the audience with plenty of laughs. The Head Hock award, for best costume overall, was awarded to Brandi Wagoner and Chelsea Springer.
This year the CWOW teachers Rob Sparks, Gregory Weissenberg and Greg Zorbas set a goal to expose more teachers in the district to the use of live video conferencing technology. This goal has been met with great success. In all three central peninsula high schools the 10th grade language arts teachers worked with the 10th grade world history teachers on a project involving the book Animal Farm. At Kenai and Skyview the music classes performed live for a children’s hospital in Minnesota.
The CWOW program itself exposed kids to multiple special events including Nazareth Israel, Kabul Afghanistan, Manhattan School of Music, and a personal story of the Stalin Purges live from Boston. The students also completed 2 ground-breaking projects involving small group collaboration from all three classrooms. With the retirement of Mr. Weissenberg, Mr. Sparks and Mr. Zorbas plan to continue the growth of the CWOW program with a new innovative team teaching approach.

Nikiski North Star Elementary
Today at 1:45 p.m. is our school variety show. This event will be held in the gym and everyone is invited to see all of the extraordinary talent of our students at NNS.
We will be celebrating our 5th graders on Tuesday, May 22 with a promotion ceremony to be held in the gym. This will take place at 2 p.m. and all families of 5th graders are invited to attend.
There will be a Character Counts! Student of the Month pizza lunch with Ms. Callahan on Wednesday, May 23 at noon in the school library.
The last day of school for NNS will be Thursday, May 24. We will have a schoolwide picnic at noon. The picnic will include hot dogs, chips, fruit, a drink and dessert. Families are welcome to attend. Whew! Summer is approaching fast!! Depending on how your child did this year, you maybe considering summer school. We are offering 2 sessions. (Mon.-Thurs. 9 a.m. to noon from June 4-28 and July 16 to August 9). We are also offering 2 sessions of Kinder Prep. We are open Mon.-Fri. from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. We would also like to thank and say good-bye to David Padvoric who is leaving the team at The Study to start an adventure in Little Diomede as a teacher! David, you will be amazing!
Again this year our 6th grade class competed in the “Kid Wind” competition. They competed in the state middle school division and this year the Wind Devils took 3rd place. The team members are Savannah McDonald, Brianna Peters and Fiona Boze. Their wind output score was almost 3 times higher than any of the teams that competed at the High School level. Congratulations on a great job!

All library books were due back in the library last Friday. Ms. Thompson will be giving out prizes to all kids who have their books turned in and fines paid. If a whole class has all their books turned in and fines paid, the whole class will get another prize. Mrs. Painter’s class has already earned their full class second reward. Who will be next?
With the end of the year comes summer activities. One is our summer reading program. Your child should be bringing home a flyer outlining how they may participate. Each student who does meet the goal will receive a T-shirt and recognition when we return in the fall. The Kasilof Public library is open during the summer and is a great place to get books to help keep them reading through the summer.
