On Tuesday, Sept. 11, we sent home a paper copy of a survey we would like 100% of you to fill out and return. The results of the survey are intended to reflect your wishes in regard to the issues surrounding grade spans at the elementary, middle, and high school levels in Soldotna and the surrounding areas. There will also be a community meeting here at Tustumena on Sept. 18th at 6 p.m. about this topic. 

Our new after-school program through the Boys and Girls Club is up and going. I would like to encourage any and all families who would benefit by having a convenient, safe, productive place for after-school care to contact the Boys and Girls Club at 598-8120 or via email- jangletonatpositiveplaceforkids.com

IDEA

IDEA is accepting enrollments for the 2012-13 school year. Our enrollment benefits include; funds for books and lessons, a computer and certified teachers to assist you in your child’s education. If you would like more information or to enroll visit our website www.ideafamilies.org or call 260-7555 or come by our office in the Red Diamond Center on K-Beach Road.

Families that are pre-registered please plan to be at Solid Rock Camp by 8:45 a.m. to begin the Outdoor Education Day. Dress for the weather and come ready to enjoy horseback riding, archery, boating and more.

Parents come by the office to sign-up for Book-It. This national reading incentive program encourages your child to read on their own and gain skills in comprehension and fluency. Please see Omie to learn more about this great program.

 

Cook Inlet Academy

Make sure to check out Sycamore for important school information, especially if your student is involved in athletics. All practice information and anything pertaining to sports will be posted here. If you need assistance with accessing Sycamore, please do not hesitate to contact the office for assistance.

We are still looking for a parent volunteer for Tuesday Pizza. You would need to assist from approximately 11:30 – noon. We are also seeking chapel speakers for Wednesday. If you have any interest, please contact Jill at the office.

* Sept. 24 at 6:30 p.m. is Parent Night.

* October 3 is School Pictures. 

* October 18-19, school will be closed for the ACSI Convention. 

* October 25, there will be no school for 7 – 12th Grade for Parent Teacher conference.

* October 26, there will be no school for K – 12th Grade for Parent Teacher conference.

 

Kaleidoscope School of Arts and Science

The next PTA meeting will be Sept. 27th at 6:00 p.m. in the library. For questions or concerns please contact them at ksasptaatgmail.com. Fall fundraiser packets have been sent home. These packets are due by Sept. 21st. If you have any questions or concerns about this fundraiser please contact Christie Holmes at 252-3139.

The APC will meet this Thursday, Sept. 20th at 4:00 p.m. The APC will be discussing enrollment numbers for the 2013-2014 school year. Parents are welcome to attend. Please contact Chairman Jeremy Hamilton at twoxrifles@gmail.com for more information. 

With field trips and volunteer activities gearing up, please make sure you have your volunteer background check completed. The background check is done through the KPBSD website http://www.kpbsd.k12.ak.us. Once there, click on the volunteer tab and follow the instructions. This should only take about 5 minutes. Along with the background check you will need to complete the Kaleidoscope volunteer training. This training will be held at 9:15 on Monday, Sept. 17 and again that evening at 6:30. If you are unable to attend either session, it will be placed online within a couple of weeks. 

 

Kenai Middle School

Monday Sept. 17th kicks off Spirit Week here at Kenai Middle. The week will culminate with the year’s first Activity Night Friday the 21st from 6-8 p.m. Our A and B soccer teams will have games on Tuesday the 18th at Nikiski Jr Sr High and Friday the 21st at KMS beginning at 3 p.m.. The Cross Country running team will compete at Nikiski on Friday the 21st at 3 p.m. A Site Council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday the 25th at 5 p.m.. We are still looking for volunteers for our Mass Health Screening on the 27th and TB testing on the 25th. Please call the school at 283-1700 for more information. 

 

Nikiski North Star Elementary

There will be a Title I meeting in the staff lounge today at 3:45 p.m.

PTA would like to introduce our new board members: Brianna Redfern, President; Amanda Abel, Vice President; Sasha Fallon, Secretary; and Trina Stichal, Treasurer. The next meeting is scheduled for October 1st at 6:00 p.m. 

This year our Artist in Residence will be Katherine Hocker from Juneau. She will be in our school beginning Sept. 17th through Sept. 28th. She specializes in field sketching, nature drawing, science illustration, and nature journals. She will be sharing her talents through workshops for the students and staff. “This Artists in Schools project is supported by a grant from the Alaska State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts with additional funding from the Rasmuson Foundation.”

 

K-Beach Elementary

Our music teacher, Mrs. Duhan, is looking for donated instruments in good condition. Please drop off at K-Beach Elementary School if you would like to support our beginning band students.

Connections Homeschool Program

Connections Homeschool Program has open enrollment for all students at this time. All students not enrolled in public school are encouraged to contact the Connections office at 714-8880 to learn about all of the educational benefits that Connections Homeschool Program can provide for children.

The BOOK IT! K-6 Program has begun and we are happy to be a part of it. Spend just 20 minutes each day focusing on raising a reader. Set a monthly reading goal and when that goal is met , celebrate achievement by going to Pizza Hut and redeeming the BOOK IT! coupon for a personal pan pizza. SCHOOL PICTURES will be Thursday, October 4th from 1:00 – 4:00 in the Borough Assembly Chambers located on the lower level of the Borough Building on Binkley Street. Retakes will be held Wednesday, November 15th.

 

Mountain View Elementary

The Site Council will be meeting on Thursday, Sept. 20 at 4:00 PM in the library. Picture day is Wednesday, Sept. 26. Innisbrook Fundraiser orders need to be entered on the Innisbrook website by Friday, October 5.  If you need assistance with the ordering process please call the office at 283-8600. 

We are collecting Safeway receipts dated Sept. 18 - Sept. 25 to receive a 10% rebate on qualifying purchases. Please bring your receipts to the office by Friday, Sept. 28. We will use these funds for student field trips and other educational activities.

Free Training for High School students

KPBSD Career and Tech Department is offering free after school academies to train students in the Welding, Construction and Medical Field.

Any high school student is able to participate in any of our academies. If a student successfully completes the 60 hour academy they will receive practical art credit. Transportation may be provided if needed.

Current Academies and their locations:

* Welding: Workforce Development Center (WDC-located behind KCHS) Class days are Tues, Wed and Thurs from 2:30-4:30. Students will be constructing an aluminum drift boat. 

* Construction: Nikiski (Triumvirate Theatre just outside of Kenai) Class days are Tues, Wed, Thurs 2:30-6:00. Students will be installing wood floor, sinks, toilet, etc.

* Basic carpentry and plumbing will be taught.

* Construction: WDC Students will be finishing the construction of a shed.

* Construction: Skyview High School Start date Oct. 9th to Dec. 13th Tues & Thurs 3:00-6:00. Students will be building a gazebo.

* Construction: Ninilchik (Kenai Peninsula Fair Grounds) Class days are Saturdays from 1-5 starting Oct. 13th. Students will be learning how to make and fit cabinets in a kitchen and basic carpentry.
