Connections Homeschool Program has open enrollment for all students at this time. All students not enrolled in public school are encouraged to contact the Connections office at 714-8880 to learn about all of the educational benefits that Connections Homeschool Program can provide for children.

The BOOK IT! K-6 Program has begun and we are happy to be a part of it. Spend just 20 minutes each day focusing on raising a reader. Set a monthly reading goal and when that goal is met , celebrate achievement by going to Pizza Hut and redeeming the BOOK IT! coupon for a personal pan pizza. Coupons are available at the Soldotna Connections office. Please call Lennie Yoter with any questions. More information may be found at <> 

School Pictures will be Thursday, October 4th from 1:00 – 4 p.m. in the Borough Assembly Chambers located on the lower level of the Borough Building on Binkley Street. Retakes will be held Wednesday, November 15th.

Please save your Safeway receipts until September 26 and deliver them to the office. Each receipt will have a notation of how much of your grocery bill is redeemable for CIA. This is a great way to support our school!

The ACSAA Soccer Tournament is Friday and Saturday at the Kenai Sports Complex. Make sure to check out Sycamore for the game schedule and come on out to support your school!

Make sure to check out Sycamore for important school information, especially if your student is involved in athletics. All practice information and anything pertaining to sports will be posted here. If you need assistance with accessing Sycamore, please do not hesitate to contact the office for assistance.

ORDER YOUR NEW CIA APPAREL NOW! Please see the order form sent home with your children to order new CIA apparel by Sept. 28th. If your child doesn’t have a form, they are available at the office. We will only order apparel that has been paid for ahead of time! If you don’t get your order in by Sept. 28th, you will have to wait till we submit the next order. We have short sleeved t-shirts for $12, long sleeved t-shirts for $15 and hooded sweatshirts for $25. (And a FREE short sleeved t-shirt in size and color of your choice if you are the first one to call Jill at the office, and say you read this in the What’s Happening, 262-5101). They all come in a variety of fun colors! Show your school spirit by wearing your new CIA shirts! They also make great gifts for family members!

Kaleidoscope School of Arts and Science

The PTA meeting is September 27th at 6:00 p.m. in the library. Kaleidoscope gear will go on sale beginning September 28th. Order forms will be sent home in the Friday folders and will be due back to the school on October 8th. The Penny Drive for the art project is ongoing! The bottle for collection is in the display case across from the library. For questions or concerns for PTA, please contact them at 

If your student’s bus is running late, please contact the bus barn at 260-3557 for more info. They are able to track the bus before and after school. 

Please make sure that you have your background check and volunteer training completed 48 hours before your scheduled volunteer day. The online training will be made available on the KSAS website soon. Also, field trip volunteer forms must be turned in 48 hours before a field trip. Please call the office if you have any questions about how to get your background check or have questions about whether or not you are cleared to volunteer.

Kalifornsky Beach Elementary 

Thank you to everyone who supported the First Grade Raffle.  The drawing was held Sept. 14 and the winners are: 

Neal Higginson, $50 at the Duck Inn and four Orca movie tickets.

 Lillie Bowen, $70 Jumping Junction punch card; and Johnna Lemm $200 at Sweeney’s Clothing.

This year’s RIGS Queen of reading was Samantha Durfey who read 20,695 minutes over the summer. A total of 111 students turned in reading sheets showing that they continued to read on a regular basis over the summer, for a combined total of 356,981 minutes. We want to thank our sponsors who help make our RIGS program a huge success – VFW Auxilary, Tesoro, and Soldotna Rotary.

K-Beach participates in the Box Tops for Education program. Box Tops can be turned in to classroom teachers, or brought in to the office. 

eScrip 10% Back to School Safeway Program September 18 - 28 eScrip is a fundraising program where merchants give a % of purchases back to our school. A major participant in the program is Safeway. Please be on the lookout for an eScrip 10% Back to School code at the bottom of your Safeway receipt. The code can either be entered at the web address on the receipt or turned in to the K-Beach Elementary office. For supporters/members that are currently part of the eScrip program, your group’s account will be automatically funded. 

If you are not a member of the program, forms are available in the office. Once you are signed up, donations are automatically made to the school.

Kenai Central High

School is in full swing now if you are starting to fall behind, please make plans to receive extra help and attend the afterschool study hall in the library. The study hall is open Monday through Thursday from 2:30-3:30. 

This year’s deadline for senior photos will be October 31st. The yearbook staff will need all senior portraits and baby photos submitted at this time. In regards to last year’s yearbooks, we do not have any new information on when they will be ready, but we will post the information as soon as we know when they will be ready.

Homecoming was a big success this past week and a big “thank you” needs to go out to all of the community members and businesses that donated their time and money for the cause. 


Mountain View Elementary

Picture day is Wednesday, September 26. 

Innisbrook Fundraiser orders need to be entered on the Innisbrook website by Friday, October 5. If you need assistance with the ordering process please call the office at 283-8600.

We are collecting Safeway receipts dated September 18 - September 25 to receive a 10% rebate on qualifying purchases. Please bring your receipts to the office by Friday, September 28. We will use these funds for student field trips and other educational activities.

Nikiski North Star Elementary

This morning at 8:20 am we will be having Muffins for Moms in the school gym. Please plan on attending to enjoy some delicious muffins and coffee. If you need more information, please call the office at 776-2600.

We have had a wonderful time hosting our Artist in Residence, Katherine Hocker from Juneau. She is a very talented artist who specializes in field sketching, nature drawing, science illustration and nature journals. She will be with us through this week. “This Artists in Schools project is supported by a grant from the Alaska State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the arts with additional funding from the Rasmuson Foundation.”

Today we will have our annual fundraiser kickoff assembly. The primary grades will assemble at 2:15 pm and the intermediate will begin at 2:45 pm. 


Redoubt Elementary

Our school-wide fundraiser ended September 19th; all orders with money should be turned into the school by September 20th. Thank you for supporting our school and students. School Pictures will be September 25th for all students. Siblings are welcome to be photographed the same day between 11:30 and 12:15. Retakes will be October 23rd. 

Mark your calendar September 26th. We will all meet at the Catholic Church at Fireweed and Redoubt at 8:00 a.m. We’ll leave at 8:15 a.m. to walk to school. Members of the fire and police departments and other community members will be joining us. There will be snacks and prize drawings when we arrive at school. All students must be accompanied by an adult. 

Redoubt Site Based Council Election. There are two opening for parent representatives on Redoubt’s Site Based Council. Nominations will be accepted through Friday September 28th. Elections will be conducted the first week of October. Please fill out the nomination form in this week’s newsletter and return to the school office by September 28th. Redoubt’s first Fun Fest will be Thursday October 18th from 3:30pm until 5:00pm.

Soldotna Middle School

Preston Weeks is the August/September 8th Grade Chamber Student of the Month. He will be honored at the joint Kenai/Soldotna Chambers of Commerce luncheon on Tuesday, Sept. 25 at the Soldotna Sports Center at noon. Congratulations Preston!  Last week for Cross Country Running and Soccer! Good luck to all Spartan teams!

Intramural Basketball Begins Monday, October 1st! All students who wish to participate need to turn in the required sports forms on the first day. These forms can be picked up at the Front Office or found online on the Soldotna Middle School KPBSD Web Homepage <> > Spartan Sports > Required Sports Paperwork > Forms 1-4. Boys and Girls practice will alternate each week. Week one will begin with girl’s practice first from 2:30 – 4:00; Boys in supervised study hall from 2:30 – 4:00, practice to follow from 4:00 – 5:30. The Study

The Study is a fully accredited learning center here to meet the academic needs of the Kenai Peninsula. This month’s piano student of the week is Tiara Goolsby. Tiara is recognized with this award because of her completion of book 1. Our math award this month goes to Cristiana Moyer who is becoming a multiplying machine.  The prestigious reading award goes to Evan Appelhans and Sammy Baker for being diligent in their studies. Upcoming workshops include a Lewis and Clark Study, Oct. 25-Nov. 20, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:30-3 p.m.. Also coming, Art with Miss DeeDee. This workshop will start Oct. 1 and run through Nov. 6, Mondays from 1-2:30 p.m. We offer academic Kinder Prep, Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m.-noon. Free Training for High School Students

KPBSD Career and Tech Department is offering free after school academies to train students in the Welding, Construction and Medical Field.

Any high school student is able to participate in any of our academies. If a student successfully completes the 60 hour academy they will receive practical art credit. Transportation may be provided if needed.

Current Academies:

* Construction @ Skyview High School where students will be building a gazebo. Academy dates are Oct 9th-Dec 13th Tues & Thurs 3:00-6:00. 

* Construction @ Ninilchik (Kenai Peninsula Fair Grounds) students will be learning how to make and fit cabinets in a kitchen and basic carpentry. Academy starts Oct 13th and will run on most Saturdays from 1-5pm.
