New programs, courses to be offered at KPC

It is anticipated that a new, associate of applied science degree in fisheries technology degree will be offered at the Kachemak Bay Campus beginning next semester (spring 2013). The degree will be offered collaboratively through the University of Southeast, Ketchikan. The degree will provide students with a broad, practical foundation in fisheries that will prepare graduates for entry level employment with state and federal agencies and aquaculture facilities.

There will be an informational meeting provided by Kate Sullivan, UAS assistant professor of fisheries technology, about the fisheries technology degree at 12 p.m. on Sept. 26 at KBC. Many of the classes will be available via e-learning with options for local internships and field experience.

For more information, contact KBC at 907-235-7743 or e-mail kafrost2@kpc.alaska.edu.

Another program that will be offered next semester is an associate of applied science degree in outdoor leadership.

The degree will provide students the skills needed to enter the outdoor recreation industry as a professional and to expand personal outdoor skills. The program, offered collaboratively through Prince William Sound Community College in Valdez, will be available at KRC and KBC with key courses delivered via video conferencing at both locations. Many of the skills courses, such as sea kayaking and winter camping, will be available on the Peninsula.

A certificate in architectural and engineering technology is currently being offered at KBC and will be available at KRC beginning next semester. The certificate provides training in AutoCADD software (computer-aided drafting and design) via e-learning coursework from University of Alaska Anchorage’s Community and Technical College.

Courses in fire science that lead to the Firefighter I certificate will also be offered next semester through a partnership with local fire stations and an equipment grant from the University of Alaska. KPC hopes to expand fire training courses to include wildland firefighting in the future.

Presentation regarding Medicare and related insurance programs

Learning how to interpret and navigate complex social programs like Medicare, Medicaid, long-term care insurance and co-insurance is not easy. With the aging of Alaska’s baby boomers, many families are finding themselves in situations that require knowledge about how to access these services.

A part of KPC’s strategic plan is to provide a ‘public square’ to bring these types of topics to the community.

Gwen Johnson, social services associate at Heritage Place in Soldotna, will be giving a presentation titled “Facts/Myths of Medicare, Medicaid, Long-term Care Insurance and Co-insurance” from 4:30-6 p.m. on Nov. 8 in the Steffy Building at KRC. Johnson will focus on the basics of insurance and how it relates in coverage for hospitals, assisted living homes, home services and continuing care communities. This event is free and open to the public.

GED math study group formed

The KRC Learning Center knows that math is generally the most challenging section of the GED exam. With this in mind, they have formed a math study group for students at all levels of expertise to prepare for the math exam.

The group is being led by Learning Center Instructor Ramsey Vega and no registration is required to join.

The group meets from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday evenings at the KRC Learning Center (Room 153 in the Brockel Building). For more information, call 262-0327.
