If your child is in kindergarten or 7th grade, or a new student in this district, they will be required to receive the PPD (TB tine test) this year. You should have received a permission slip in your snail mail regarding this. If you have not yet returned that permission slip, please do so.
Originally, the free CIA PPD clinic date was Oct.. 23. For scheduling reasons, we have to change this date to Oct. 22, with Oct. 24 being the day kids will have their PPD’s checked. Please make sure your kids are in school both days. If they miss either day, you will be responsible to have this done on your own.

PTA News: Kaleidoscope Gear order forms are due back to the school today! T
The Gear Committee will meet on Oct.. 12th at 9:15 a.m. in the Parent Room to tally orders. There is an Art Project committee meeting today at 4 p.m. The Art Committee will be hosting an Ice Cream Social on Oct. 12th at 6 p.m. This night will also be the kickoff for the Original Artworks Fund raiser. Don’t forget about the Change Drive for the Art Project that will be ongoing throughout the school year. Every time the change jar is filled, there will be an all school popcorn party.
■ The PTA will meet on Oct. 18th at 6 p.m. in the library.
■ The annual Holiday Extravaganza will be held on Oct. 27th in the school gym. If you are interested in being a vendor at this event, please contact Kaarin at 283-2076.
■ Oct. 10 after school Dance Club for those 5th / 6th graders who signed up will be on 3:45 - 4:45 p.m.
■ Oct. 11 Picture retake day. There will be time from noon until 12:30 p.m. for sibling pictures. Order forms were sent home in the Friday Folder and need to be returned to the school with payment included. If you are unhappy with your original picture packet, send in the picture packet that needs to be replaced with your student by Oct. 11.
■ Oct. 11 is the Parent Potluck for the kindergartners from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
■ Oct. 18 is Twin Day. This is a fun spirit day to dress up as a twin with a classmate or friend.
■ Oct. 25 the APC will meet at 6 p.m. in the school library.
The K-Beach PTA and the library are sponsoring a pumpkin decorating contest during October. Students can decorate a pumpkin as their favorite character from their favorite book. Pumpkins will be displayed in the library, and prizes will be awarded for the best pumpkin in each grade level.

Kenai Central High School
The KCHS Academic Recognition Banquet will be held at 6 p.m. on Oct. 9 in the auditorium. The banquet is held to acknowledge students who earned a GPA of 3.5 or higher for the 2012 spring semester. Invitations to the banquet were sent home to students and their parents. We hope to see you there as we celebrate the students’ success.
This year’s deadline for senior photos will be Oct. 31. The yearbook staff will need all senior portraits and baby photos submitted at this time. In regards to last year’s yearbooks, we do not have any new information on when they will be ready, but we will post the information as soon as we know when they will be ready.
The countdown has begun for high school hockey! Any KCHS student who wants to play hockey will take the ice on Oct.15th for try outs. Prior to that; every player and at least one parent must attend a mandatory meeting on Oct. 8 at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria at KCHS. Whether or not your student has played Kardinal hockey before they still must attend this meeting. Christine Babcock will be providing free physicals for all players who need them. If your player has already played a high school sport this year, they will not need another physical.
Kenai Middle School

Mountain View Elementary
There will be a PTA meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 9 at 4 PM in the Library.
Fire Safety Week is Oct. 8 – Oct. 11 here at Mountain View. The Kenai Fire Department will be here to visit classes and take students through the Fire Safety House.
Lockdown Drill Scheduled
On Oct. 16 at 9 a.m. Mountain View Elementary in cooperation with the Kenai Police Department will execute a lockdown drill.
This is a procedure that would be used in the case of dangerous person or persons inside the school or in the area of the school. During this drill teachers and students will take shelter outside of the line of site of windows and doors. Police will arrive at the school just as if this was a real situation. This is, however, only a drill. We practice to insure that if such an emergency arose the children and staff at Mountain View Elementary would be safe.
■ Oct. 19 is an inservice day. There will no school for students.
■ Oct. 24 picture retakes are scheduled
The annual Mountain View Carnival will be on Oct. 26 from 5 – 8 p.m. and is open to the public. All funds earned will go toward student field trips or student activities, such as artists in schools, for all students. Proceeds may also be used for grade level equipment and supplies. There will be lots of food, games & prizes. Tickets are .25 cents each and most games cost 2-4 tickets to play.
Parents are asked to sign up to help run a booth or to donate a cake or cookies for the cake walk and/or a prize for the prize walk.
Parents need to have a background check through the school district to volunteer. Please call the office at 283-8600 if you need help with this process.

Who: Open to any KPBSD student in grades 4-12.
-Students work on a team of 3- 4 students with an Adult Coach.
-Junior Division: grades 4 – 6
-Intermediate/Senior Division: grades 7 – 12
-Division is determined by the team member with the highest grade level
What: A KPBSD problem solving competition sponsored by Quest
-Long Term Problem — different every year — teams receive the problem several weeks before the competition and work to complete their solution to the problem up until the day of the event.
-Spontaneous Problem – a problem presented at the competition for teams to solve within a very short amount of time.

WorkKeys® tests are scheduled for Nov. 7 beginning at 7:50 a.m. in the auditorium. All Juniors will take the WorkKeys® foundational assessments. Students will take three 55 minute online assessments in the areas of Reading, Math, and Locating Information. This Assessment is part of the Alaska Career Ready program, which is administered by the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development and the Alaska Department of Labor & Workforce Development. The State Board adopted regulations requiring all Alaska public schools to administer the WorkKeys assessments to 11th grade students in the areas of Applied Math, Reading for Information, and Locating Information. Free Training for High School Students
KPBSD Career and Tech Department is offering free after school academies to train students in the Welding, Construction and Medical Field. Any high school student is able to participate in any of our academies. If a student successfully completes the 60 hour academy they will receive a 1/2 practical art credit. Transportation may be provided if needed.
Construction at Skyview High School where students will be building a gazebo. Academy dates are Oct 9 through Dec 13 Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-6 p.m.
Construction at Ninilchik (Kenai Peninsula Fair Grounds) students will be learning how to make and fit cabinets in a kitchen and basic carpentry will be taught.
