Kenai Peninsula College: Around Campus

Posted: October 28, 2012 - 5:31pm  |  Updated: October 29, 2012 - 7:15am

Due to the popularity of the annual Health Fair, generally held in February, a smaller version of the health fair will be held from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3 in the McLane commons, Brockel Building lobby and room 158.

Holding the event on Saturday will hopefully encourage more people to take advantage of the low cost blood tests and health screenings. General health education materials provided by a variety of vendors will be offered at the event.

The Providence Hospital Mobile Digital Mammogram Coach is scheduled to be available. They will be parked in the KRC parking lot at 9 a.m. as part of the Health Fair. Providence staff will be offering 15 minute mammograms for women age 40 and older who are due for their annual screenings (cost will be billed to each patient’s insurance).Women interested in scheduling an appointment for their annual screening mammogram must pre-register prior to Nov. 2 by calling 907-212-3151 or 888-458-3151 (toll free). At press time there were still seven openings available for mammography screenings.

According to the Alaska Health Fair, Inc. website, the following blood tests will be available: chemistry/hematology profile (27 tests) that includes a complete metabolic panel, CBC (complete blood count) and lipids for $45; TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) for $30; PSA (prostate specific antigen) for $25; vitamin D level for $50; hemoglobin A1C (measures average blood glucose control for the past 2-3 months) for $25; and ABO/RH blood typing for $20. It is recommended that individuals having blood drawn for the complete metabolic panel should fast for 10-12 hours prior to the test and everyone having any blood test should drink lots of water prior to the blood draw.

KRC's annual Career Day

KRC’s Career Day will be held from 8:45-11:30 a.m. on Nov. 9. Participants will have time to attend four, 30 minute sessions of their choosing and learn about careers from experts in each field. Career Day is a great opportunity for local students (high school and college) and community members to connect with potential employers and explore prospective careers.

Career resource and industry representatives who will staff booths at the event include Alyeska Pipeline Service Company, Challenger Learning Center, Kenaitze Indian Tribe, Crowley Marine Services, CH2M Hill and the UAA Small Business Development Center.

More than sixty different career paths will have representatives participating who will speak to what it’s like to work in the profession, education/training requirements, potential for advancement, pay scale and benefits. They will also provide time to answer questions from attendees. Some of the careers represented at this year’s fair include those in health care, justice, travel and tourism, hospitality, communications, education, computer and information technology, business, finance, sales, construction and mechanical trades, process technology and other energy-related careers.

Interested in learning more? Call the KRC Career and Community Engagement Center at 262-0337 or e-mail kltimlin@kpc.alaska.edu for more information and to get a schedule of career sessions.
