Kenai Peninsula College: Around Campus

Posted: November 18, 2012 - 12:30pm

The KRC Art Students’ League Association has announced that the 2012 Annual Art Extravaganza will be from 6-9 p.m. on Dec. 7 at KPC’s Kenai River Campus. Admission is $5 per person and $10 for families.

This annual event is a fund raiser for the ASLA and has become known for delectable desserts and quality student artwork. The student artists will offer their art for bid purchase through live and silent auctions. In addition to the auctions, the club will also raffle a donated art piece.

This year the raffle item is an original fine art photographic print by Gary L. Freeburg. The print appears in Freeburg’s new book, “Revisiting the Alaskan Sublime.” Raffle tickets will be available at the KRC Bookstore and from ASLA members for $5 each or five tickets for $20.

For more information about the event, contact Celia Anderson, KRC associate professor of art, at 262-0361 or e-mail cranderson@kpc.alaska.edu.

KRC Adjunct Professor Bob Amundson’s popular online humanities class, HUM A220: Film as/and Literature, is back for the spring 2013 semester. The web-based course is focused on Film Noir and the literature that inspired these dark films of the 1940s and 1950s. Students read classic novels and watch defining films of the genre. For more information, contact Amundson at bobamundson@hotmail.com.

Another popular, community interest class being offered this spring is The Art and History of Brewing. The class, taught by Bill Howell, KPC director of Student Services, is structured to teach students to appreciate the world of beer.

This is not a how-to-brew beer class. “We have one lecture on brewing, but I emphasize beer appreciation, pairing beers with foods, different styles and history of brews, glassware for serving beer and proper beer storage,” instructor Bill Howell said. “We taste beer in each class — just one to two ounces for academic purposes, so students must be 21 years old.”

Howell comes by his expertise honestly. He is known as a serious “beer guy” whose knowledge of the subject helped him win the 2009 title of Wynkoop Brewery’s Beer Drinker of the Year. His title from the brewery, located in Denver, Colorado, promises Howell will be served free beer for life when he visits the brewery. Howell is also the author of the blog “Drinking on the Last Frontier,” providing readers with regular news and commentary on the craft brewing scene.

The KRC Student Union is organizing the second open mic night of the semester. The public event will be held from 7-9 p.m. on Nov. 29 in the Steffy Building. The event is a great venue for artists of all persuasions to come share their talents.

Anyone interested in performing can sign up at the Student Union office (located across from the Gary L. Freeburg Gallery in the Brockel Building), e-mail iysgov@kpc.alaska.edu or call 262-0339.

Students love it when the notice comes out that it’s time for textbook buyback at the Kenai River Campus. Students can bring textbooks for cash to the KRC Bookstore from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and 1-3 p.m. Dec. 3-14.

The bookstore buys back textbooks that will be used again next semester. The buyback program is designed to put cash in students’ pockets and help future students buy used books.

For more information, contact the KRC Bookstore at 262-0312.
