The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District Board of Education meets at 7 p.m. in Assembly Chambers in the borough building, at 148 N. Binkley Street in Soldotna (unless otherwise noted).

Career and Technical program offers training

KPBSD Career and Tech Department is offering free after school academies to train students in the welding, construction and medical fields.

Any high school student is able to participate in any of our academies. If a student successfully completes the 60 hour academy they will receive practical art credit. Transportation may be provided if needed.

Nikiski High School: Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAD-CAM) academy starting Jan. 22-Feb 15, Monday-Friday, 2:30-5:30 p.m. Students will be learning how to use drafting/design software for computer aided machining. They will learn how to use 3 different CNC machines: Plasma Cam for metal, Shop Bot for wood and Versa Cam for vinyl.

Skyview High School: Personal Care Attendant (PCA) academy starting Jan. 8 at 3 p.m. in room C106. This first day is a mandatory meeting. Academy schedule TBD by students and instructor. This academy is open to Juniors and Seniors only. The PCA course is a state program. Students will learn Personal Care Services, Employability Awareness, Earn First Aid and State Certification, and participate in Job Shadowing.

Other classes that we have starting next semester are: Emergency Trauma Technician, Welding and Construction. Dates and times TBA.

Funding for the Alaska Construction Academies comes from a grant from the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development, The Alaska Department of Commerce and Economic Development and The Alaska Youth First Program.

Connections Home-school

Kenai Fjords trip in May! Please contact Wendi at 714-8880 or for more information. Must sign up and pay fee’s by December 10. This fee is non-refundable. All Homeschoolers grades 3-12 and families are invited to join.

The Analytic Writing Assessment (AWA) will be administered to all students in grades 5, 7 and 9. Testing will take place December 3-6. This is a district test designed to assess writing skills. Practice materials and more information will be available at our offices. Please call the Connections Office to schedule a testing time for your student.

The BOOK IT! K-6 Program has begun and we are happy to be a part of it. Spend just 20 minutes each day focusing on raising a reader. Set a monthly reading goal and when that goal is met , celebrate achievement by going to Pizza Hut and redeeming the BOOK IT! coupon for a personal pan pizza. Cook Inlet Academy

December 2 at 2:30 p.m. is the Christmas Program at College Heights Church. Students need to be in place by 2:00 p.m. Please save the date and bring family to support your student!

December 21, school will be dismissed at noon to kick off Christmas Break.

December 27-29 is the Third Annual Hoops for the Holidays Basketball Camp.

January 7 is a Teacher In Service Day, classes will resume on Tuesday, January 8.

January 28 at 6:30 p.m. is Parent Night.

CIA’s Annual “Classic” Basketball Tournament needs you! There are plenty of jobs, big and small that need to be filled. Please consider helping out to once again help make this a successful community event. Contact Rhonda at or 398-7220 if you are able to help in any way.

CIA’s Third Annual Hoops For The Holidays is back! Our elementary basketball camp will be held on December 27-29 (Thurs.-Sat). This is put on by the high school boys and girls basketball teams and their coaches. It’s an awesome opportunity to develop skills, make a friend, foster mentoring with secondary students, and give parents a “break” during the “break”! The cost is $90 per child for all three days or $30 per day. Registration for CIA families will run through the month of November and open up to the public in December. It’s a popular camp, so don’t miss out and register early. If you have any questions, contact Coach Justin at 252-8854.

Last Wednesday was the last day to order CIA apparel for 2012. Orders will resume Spring 2013. We have short sleeved T-shirts for $12, long sleeved t-shirts for $15 and hooded sweatshirts for $25. They all come in a variety of fun colors! Show your school spirit by wearing your new CIA apparel!

IDEA Homeschool

Families can still register for the BOOK-IT Reading Incentive Program. This program sponsored by Pizza Hut encourages children to read with monthly goals and a personal pan pizza when the goal is reached. Stop by the office for your reading kit and talk to Omie.

The Annual Winter Party is scheduled for December 14 at Solid rock Camp on the Sterling Highway. Activities for families will include tubing on the sledding hill, board games by the fireplace and sharing treats and cocoa.

Geography Fun for 4th through 8th grades is coming up on November 30 and December 7 at the office from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. Come and practice for the IDEA Geo Bee by playing map games, exploring countries and learning fun facts.

Work Keys Testing for all Juniors is on-going through December 13. If you have not yet scheduled a time to talk this Alaska Performance Exam qualifier please call Jan at 260-7555.

Two teams of IDEA students participated in the First Lego League Kenai Peninsula Qualifying Tournament at the Challenger Center on November 17. One team, H.E.L.P. (Helping Elderly Live Long & Prosper), was comprised of: Benjamin Amend, Trysten Emery, Jonathan Hawkins, Peter Hilbish, William Hoogenboom, Brett Merrow, and Randy Petty. The Road Wise Ravens Team, was comprised of:James Baisden, Gabe Bruno, Lucas Cragg, Alex Emery, Scott Loehr, Stephen Pearson, and Rebekah Petty. The theme for this year’s Lego teams is: How to keep senior citizens connected, engaged and independent. During the competition the teams are judged on Core Values (inspiration, teamwork, gracious professionalism), Project (teams research the topic and present innovative solutions), Robot Design (mechanical design, programming, strategy and innovation) and Robot Performance (how well the robot performs during the Robot Game). The Road Wise Ravens earned the Robot Performance Award for the most points scored on the Robot Game. They also brought home the overall Championship Award by embracing core values while achieving excellence and innovation in both the Robot game and Project. The Road Wise Ravens will proceed to the Anchorage Robot Rendezvous – Invitational Championship Event in January. Both teams deserve a round of applause for all their hard work in the last two and half months.

Kaleidoscope School of Arts and Sciences

Lil Shoppers Club will be held December 3-7. Information about the Lil’ Shoppers was sent home last week. Want to help? Signups will be posted on the PTA bulletin board!

Kalifornsky Beach Elementary

Kenai Central High

Attention all students that are interested in playing basketball: practice begins today. Girls will practice from 3:00-5:00, and boys will practice from 5:00-7:00. Remember, you must have your physical and paper work turned into Ms. Rustad in order to practice.

Students from the KCHS Culinary Arts class suggested that they participate in a community service project for the holidays. As a result, they prepared thirty-seven pumpkin pies in Mrs. Sims class for the Kenai Peninsula Food Bank for distribution in the local area for the Thanksgiving holiday. We would like to thank Three Bears and Kenai Safeway for their donations of ingredients and foil pie pans.

Kenai Middle School

The After School Tutoring program is being offered at KMS for their students every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 2:35 to 4 p.m. Kenai’s A and B basketball teams will have games on Tuesday at KMS and Friday in Seward. The Leadership class will host a Lock-In on Friday. The Washington DC trip deposit deadline is also on Friday.

Mountain View Elementary

Our winter concert for 1st and 2nd grade students will be on December 18 in the KCHS auditorium. The dress rehearsal will take place the morning of December 18 at KCHS. The students will be traveling by bus leaving Mountain View at 8:50 a.m. and returning at 11:30 a.m. Students must have a signed permission slip returned by December 7.

Parents should have received a pre-recorded announcement from Mountain View using our new rapid communication service. Please make sure that we have your current phone number and e-mail address so that you will receive any announcements or reminders.

Nikiski North Star Elementary

The NNS PTA will be sponsoring an in-school Kids Holiday Shop for children to shop for gifts for family and friends. There will be a walk through only on Friday. Your child will bring home a special budget envelope, item list and a wish list for you to look over. The holiday shop will be open for shopping beginning December 3 through December 7. Each classroom will have a designated shopping time. If you have any questions, please call the school at 776-2600.

December 4 will be the NNS Winter Concert Extravaganza. This event will feature Pre-K through 2nd grade students singing holiday tunes under the direction of music teacher Christine Beahm. The concert will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Nikiski Middle/High School.

Redoubt Elementary

The Elf Shelf Holiday Store is coming, December 4, 5 and 6. PTA sponsors this annual gift shopping opportunity for students. Information will be sent home with students.

Redoubt PTA Holiday Kindness Program assisting Redoubt families in need this holiday season. Please help this year if you can: Purchase a gift or gifts from our angel tree for a Redoubt family. The angel tree was put up in the school hallway on November19, in time to shop the after Thanksgiving sales! All gifts need to be brought to the school by December 7. Cash donations in any amount can be dropped off at the school office. Money will be used to purchase Holiday gifts for Redoubt children and their families. Volunteer your time. We need people to assemble the angel tree, shop, and much more.

Last week’s Box Top winners were Cameron Blackwell and Paulyne Catacutan, keep those box tops coming.

The Snow Party is coming, December 6 at 6:30 p.m. in the Soldotna High School Auditorium. Redoubt’s 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade students will be performing a Winter Musical. All Children have parts in the performance. Parents are welcome to help build costumes and props. Stage decorating is December 5 from 4:15 to 6:00 at Soldotna High School. Redoubt students collected 1,021 pounds of non-perishable food items for the Soldotna Food Bank during our Great Grocery Grab last Friday. Mrs. Arthur’s 6th grade class delivered the food to the Food Bank last Monday.

Substitute Educators Day was November 21. The staff and students at Redoubt would like to thank all of the substitutes that have worked at Redoubt over the years. Thank you.

Thank you, ABATE, Country Foods and The American Legion for donating gift cards. These gift cards will be used to assist families in need during the upcoming holiday season.

Skyview High

Today — Basketball season begins. Participants must show proof of a current physical and have all paperwork completed and turned in before they can try out or practice.

Tuesday – ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) testing will take place Tuesday in the library from 8-11 am for interested juniors.

Wednesday — Skyview Talent Showcase, a combination talent show and school dance, will take place in the commons from 6:30-8:30 p.m. This event is open to the public. Donations will be accepted at the door. Concessions will be provided by Skyview softball team members. Come out and have some fun!

Wednesday and Thursday — Juniors will take the required WorkKeys test in the library either Wednesday morning or Thursday morning.
