Kenai Peninsula College: Around Campus

Posted: December 1, 2012 - 2:54pm

It’s that time of year again! KPC’s fall 2012 semester is coming to an end and the Kenai River Campus Bookstore is buying back student textbooks. Students can sell back their textbooks from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and 1-3 p.m. Dec. 3-14. The KRC Bookstore buys back textbooks that will be used again next semester. The buyback program is designed to put cash in KPC students’ pockets and help future students buy less expensive used books.

For more information, please contact the KRC Bookstore at 262-0312.

The National Institute of Health (NIH) in Maryland is offering several paid internships to Alaska Native students who are interested in pursuing biomedical/human health research. These internships are available to college students (1-3 years of college experience preferred) and are offered year-round. Participants will have the opportunity to work with NIH scientists who are researching in fields that are of interest to each student.

Students who are interested in learning more should email Margarita Valencia, assistant director of fellowship training, at mv36t@nih.gov for more information and/or to begin the application process.

The KRC Student Union is once again collaborating with the Toys for Tots program to collect gifts for families in need on the Kenai Peninsula. Last year’s effort was a great success, with donations totaling over $900. The KRCSU hopes to make this year’s program an even greater success; every donation is appreciated!

The Toys for Tots program is administered by the United States Marine Corps Reserve and was founded in 1947 in Los Angeles, California. According to the Toys for Tots website, the program and foundation have collected and distributed more than 452 million toys to more than 209 million needy children.

Those who wish to donate can drop off new, unwrapped toys (for both children and teens) in the donation box located in the Kenai River Campus’ Student Services department. Donations are being accepted until Dec. 15.

For more information, please contact the KRC Student Union at 262-0339 or e-mail iysgov@kpc.alaska.edu.

The Kenai Fine Arts Center will exhibit “Refined Light,” a retrospective group photography exhibit of images previously selected and exhibited in major, statewide juried photography shows.

About a dozen well-known Peninsula photographers, including Bill Heath, KRC adjunct photography instructor, Jane Jones, KRC assistant professor of art and photography and Joseph Kashi, Kenai Peninsula College Council member, will display their images.

There will be an opening reception from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 6 at the Kenai Fine Arts Center in Kenai. Many of the photographs will be available for sale. The public is invited and the event is free. The exhibition will run through the end of December.

Santa Claus is coming to town! Santa will be visiting KPC’s Kenai River Campus from 12-3 p.m. on Dec. 15 in the McLane Commons. The public is welcome to attend this fun event, free of charge. Bring the kids and a camera to snap some photos of Santa! Free hot cocoa and cookies will be offered, courtesy of the KRC Student Union, who will be sponsoring this family event.

For more information about Santa’s visit, please contact the KRC Student Union at 262-0339 or e-mail iysgov@kpc.alaska.edu.
