On Feb. 11 at 6:00 p.m., parents, students, and community members, and KPBSD staff are invited to attend a meeting to learn about the potential school reconfiguration for our Soldotna and greater Soldotna area schools. Meetings will be held at K-Beach Elementary School; Redoubt Elementary School; Skyview High School; River City Academy; Soldotna Elementary School; Soldotna Montessori Charter School; Soldotna High School; Soldotna Middle School; Sterling Elementary School; and Tustumena Elementary School. The proposed reconfiguration would create two middle schools, grades 7-9, for Soldotna area students, and one high school for grades 10-12.
The BP Teachers of Excellence program is taking nominations of outstanding teachers who are making a difference for Alaska’s young people.
The program is open to teachers statewide, and nominations will be accepted on-line at www.bpteachers.com until Feb. 15.
Each year, BP recognizes Teachers of Excellence with a $500 gift card for the teacher and a matching $500 to the teacher’s school. Last year, after expanding the program to school districts across Alaska, BP received more than 1,400 nominations.

KPBSD Career and Tech Department offers free after-school academies to train students in the welding, construction and medical fields. Any high school student is able to participate in any of the academies. If a student successfully completes the 60 hour academy they will receive practical art credit. Transportation may be provided if needed.
Soldotna High School: Emergency Trauma Technician (ETT) academy starting Feb. 21-April 20. Class days will be on Thursdays from 3:30-6:30 and Saturdays from 8:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. (Saturday class times vary.) This course will cover all areas required to receive certification as an Emergency Medical Technician. The last week of class will be for review and the final exam. If you pass the exam you’ll receive your certification and an ETT patch.
Workforce Development Center (WDC-located behind KCHS): Welding academy starting Feb. 26-May 9. Class days will be Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays from 2:30-4:30. Students will be building a 18-foot flatbed trailer.

Connections students are invited to a special assembly at Cook Inlet Academy School on Tuesday. CIA is having a special guest Storyteller from 12:15-1:05 p.m. in the CIA Memorial Gymnasium. Kay Price is known as “Storyteller for the Young and the Young at Heart.” She has been a guest storyteller across the country for young and old alike, as well as participating in international storytelling conferences. Her stories encourage reading, values and imagination. She will often come dressed in costume and present characters from the past.
CIA would like to invite the public to come and enjoy this special story time! There is no charge for this event.
Please join us for Fish and Game’s annual ice fishing event to be held Feb. 13 at Sport Lake in Soldotna. Sport Lake is located approximately 2.5 miles north of Soldotna on the Kenai Spur Highway and 1.0 mile down Sport Lake Road. Students will be taught ethical angling practices, proper techniques for both harvest and catch-and-release, bag limits, how to use ice fishing gear and learn a fun outdoor winter activity.
Bait, rods and tackle will be provided, all you need is a fishing license for anyone 16 and over that plans to fish. Connections will start fishing at 11:10 a.m. and fish until 12:10 p.m. A Connections only fishing event is planned for later in February, this is designed to be an introduction to ice fishing and a great way to beat “cabin fever.” Please RSVP with Reubin Payne at email@example.com.

Congratulations to our 3 First Lego League Teams. These three teams were given the theme Senior Solutions to research and design innovative solutions to real world problems that seniors face. The competition included many facets for judges to evaluate including: presentation, teamwork and Robot game. The Road Wise Ravens Team members: James Cullen Baisden, Stephen Pearson, Gabe Bruno, Lucas Cragg, Scott Loehr, Rebekah Petty, and Alex Emery which is coached by Billie Loehr and Jill Bruno placed 7th out of 52 teams in the Robot Games. The Helping Elderly Live Long and Prosper (H.E.L.P.) Team members: Peter Hilbish, Jonathan Hawkins, Randy Petty, William Hoogenboom, and Trysten Emery which is coached by Dawn Hoogenboom and Sam Emery won the overall Teamwork Award. The Junior Lego Team known as the Legendary Lego Masters consisted of Mackenzie Hoogenboom, Olivia Loehr and Samuel Baisden and was coached by Anna Loehr.

Kaleidoscope School of Arts and Science invites the community to join them for A Fiesta in February, Feb. 15 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the school gym. K-Beach Student Council is sponsoring a food drive Feb. 6-Feb. 22. Please bring sealed non-perishable healthy food to school. The food collected will be donated to our local Food Bank. Each class will keep track of how many boxes, bags, or cans are collected. The student council plans to display graphs of each classroom’s results. Traditionally, K-Beach families have been very generous with this project. Thank you for helping us make this community service a success!
Mr. Daniels and Mrs. Marcou’s science classes have been studying The Importance of our Oceans and have created models of the ocean floor and teams created video presentations to go with their models. Next, students will use an inquiry approach to investigate areas of interest related to ocean studies to build on their new knowledge.
Healthy Futures Challenge here at K-Beach Elementary! K-Beach is joining 139 schools which means that a record 140 schools across the state from Koliganek to Ketchikan are participating in our state’s Healthy Futures Challenge. For the months of February, March, and April our students will be able to log their daily physical activity and turn in that log at the end of each month helping them develop the habit of daily physical activity. Students will also earn prizes at the end of each month that they turn in a log and our school has the possibility of winning $750.00 for equipment or educational materials that support Healthy Futures mission of developing active children. KCHS Community, start rummaging through your closets; the National Honor Society is doing a clothing drive. The clothes will be used at the clothing closet here at KCHS for students. Extra clothes will be donated to the women’s shelter and to Salvation Army. There is a contest between grades for a food prize on who brings in the most clothes. The drive will take place the month of February. If anyone has clothes to donate please drop them off in Mrs. Bergholtz’s room.
The Battle of the Books team will be participating in the district competition today. Varsity team members include Joy Wannamaker, Anessia Hubler, Jacob Dye, and Brandon Sorhus, with Dezmond Ticknor, Mariah Prosterman, Driskoll Heath, and Trey Feagin making up the JV team. Congratulations to all the team members for six months of hard work reading, preparing, and practicing for this event.
Last November several KMS students participated in the American Mathematics competition. The top four KMS scorers for 8th grade were Drake Thomas, Mikaela Pitsch, Eric Kempf, and Kameron Brazell. The top scoring seventh graders were Mayzie Potton, and Madison Fischer. KMS was also the highest scoring school in Alaska and earned a spot on the National Merit Roll. Extra congratulations to Drake Thomas for earning the highest score in Alaska!

Annaleah Ernst, a senior at Nikiski Middle-High, has been named a candidate in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. Candidates were selected from 3.4 million students expected to graduate from high school this year. Scholars are selected on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in community and school activities. A panel will select 500 semifinalists in April, and the Commission on Presidential Scholars will select Scholars, to be announced in May.

Spring is coming this means classroom field trips are right around the corner. Parents are encouraged to complete the online volunteer application on the district website. Parent drives will also have to complete the driver’s application before they can drive and or use their vehicle for school functions. Please stop by the school office and pick up the proper driver forms. Driver forms are kept on file in the school office for the current school year.

SoHi will be locking the parking lot entrance door during the following hours: 7:50 a.m. to noon and 12:35 p.m. to 2:25 p.m.
Also note that during school hours the only open door will be the Front Entrance Commons/Flag Pole doors. The above is to improve our overall school security.
SoHi will be having school on April 19 (make-up day) for missing Jan. 14.
Soldotna High School is collecting gently used prom dresses, shoes, and accessories for Cinderella’s Closet 2013. This is a program where local ladies in need can receive free prom items. We have helped over 250 ladies from Ninilchik to Nikiski. Items can be dropped off to the main office.
There are two ways to order a transcript. Each way serves a different purpose.
If you need a transcript sent to a college or NCAA or a similar agency, then you will need to log on to: www.parchment.com to order transcripts to be sent. The request is then forwarded to SoHi. After processing, it then goes through cyberspace, rather than the US mail, to get to its destination, which is much faster! All transcripts that are headed for NCAA, colleges, etc. have to be processed this way!
A final transcript is one that shows your second semester grades. If you order your transcript during second semester, you will need to make sure you choose “next grading period” when you go on to Parchment, that way your transcript request will wait until the grades are in at the end of the year before it is sent.
Gabriela Triana was chosen as the January 8th Grade Chamber Student of the Month. She was honored at the Soldotna Chamber of Commerce luncheon on Jan. 29 at Froso’s Restaurant. Congratulations Gabriela!
High School Designation for all 8th Grade Students is posted at the SMS Front Office. High Schools are assigned based on a student’s physical address. If you have moved recently, please check with the office to make sure your address is correct. If a student chooses to attend a High School other than their designated school, an Out of Area Form needs to be completed. Students can pick up this form at the Front Office.

Get ready 9th-12th graders, Alaska Studies is not just for seniors anymore! Misty McCown is offering Alaska Studies for credit. This course is mandatory for graduation. Perfect for busy students. Course starts Tuesday and runs through April 11, 5-7 p.m. Students having trouble with Spanish Homework can come and work in a group setting with Fabi Peck (Spanish teacher) from 3-5 p.m. Elementary Spanish starts today through Feb. 28 from 1-3 p.m. (If there is enough interest from students attending public or private schools another session could be arranged.)
The Study wants to introduce Junior High Science with Exciting Experiments starting Thursday through Feb.21 with a second course building on the first stating Feb. 26-March 28. Both courses meet from 12:30-2:30 p.m. The next Mastery of Multiplication starts Feb. 12 and runs through Feb. 21, course meets on Tuesdays from 1:30-3 p.m. The next Excellence in Writing course starts today through Feb. 27 and meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 1:30-5 p.m.). Due to a conference, Mrs. Nelson will not be teaching today and Tuesday; Mrs. McCown will not be teaching the today through Wednesday.
