KBEA offers scholarships
The Kenai Borough Employees Association scholarship committee is accepting applications for four scholarships of $500 each. Scholarships are available to all graduates of the Kenai Peninsula Borough including public schools, private schools and home-schooled students.
Applications are available at any high school counselor’s office or online at www.borough.kenai.ak.us. Applications must be delivered or postmarked by March 29. They can be mailed or dropped off at the Kenai Peninsula Borough, KBEA Scholarship Committee, 144 North Binkley Street, Soldotna AK 99669.
Kaleidoscope School of Arts and Science
The PTA meeting will be held March 21st at 5:00 p.m. in the school library. Childcare will be provided by the KCHS Leadership students.
Staff Appreciation will be held March 25th through 29th. If you would like to donate items or volunteer please contact Jaime Larsen at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Family Fun Night will be March 28th at 6:00 p.m. We will be having an egg hunt. If you would like to help, please contact Christie Holmes at 252-3139.
On March 19th the staff will be holding two informational meetings on multi-age and what our school will look like with all multi-age configurations in the 1st through 6th grades. There will be meetings at 8:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. in the school library in hopes that parents will be able to attend one of the meetings. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Dahlman. Childcare will be provided at the 6:30 p.m. meeting.
Spring pictures will be held Thursday. Siblings will be able to have their pictures taken from 12 p.m. until 1 p.m. Order forms were sent home in Friday Folders before Spring Break. Extra order forms are available at the office.
The APC will meet March 25th at 6 p.m. in the school library.
The lottery for the 2013-2014 school year will be held March 27th at 4 p.m. Parents are allowed to be present for the lottery, but we ask that children not attend. Results will be mailed the week after the lottery or available in the school office.
Kalifornsky Beach Elementary
Student Council Leadership Club News: The Leadership Club sponsored a three week food drive. We gathered 1,999 items to donate to our local food bank. Thank you to our generous K-Beach community! Also, the Leadership Club will sponsor a Bake Sale during the PTA’s Garage Sale on March 23rd in the K-Beach gym. We are fundraising to purchase a carved caribou mascot.
K-Beach has great public speakers. Congratulations to the students who won ribbons at the district level competition!

The NHS clothing drive was a success. Thanks to all that donated clothes. Most of the clothes will stay at KCHS and be put in to the clothes closet which offers free clothes to any KCHS student that needs them. Congrats to the sophomore and junior class for bringing the most clothes.
The NHS committee has selected new members for NHS. The new members are going to be inducted on April 16th at 6 pm. The public is invited to attend the ceremony. Seniors: Tuesday the Job Center will be meeting with all seniors in the Little Theater during advisory to discuss resumé and job interview skills. This is an excellent opportunity to polish up your resumé as you transition out of high school and into the work force.
Congratulations to Joey Kummert for being accepted into the Juilliard Summer Dance Intensive for three weeks in New York from July 14-Aug. 2. He also got invited to audition for Cirque Du Soleil in Canada for standing out at the master classes at the dance competition 5,6,7,8 Showtime. He will be going to that on June 29-30.
During our first week back from “Break” we will have a Site Council meeting on the Tuesday at 5 p.m. in our library.
After school tutoring will be held on the 19th, 20th, and 21st from 2:35 to 4 p.m. For future information, next year’s 6th graders from Mt. View will visit Kenai Middle School during the school day on April 16th and 17th. Kaleidescope, Soldotna Montessori and K-Beach future 6th, 7th and 8th graders will visit on the 18th. There will be an open house and BBQ for students and parents the night of the 18th. Kenai Middle’s track season will begin on March 25th. Be sure to read the March newsletter on the school website.

An 8th grader, Mackenzie Lindeman placed second in the State competition for the Scenario Writing Component while three of our teams earned a spot in the State Competition in April. All of Kenai Middle’s wrestlers finished in the top 5 for the Borough Meet. 1st place medals were earned by Zack Tuttle, Paul Steffenson, Dawson Baker and Caleb Streiff. 2nd place medals went to Luke Sarks, Kelcei Zoda and Ryan Campos. 3rd place medals were awarded to Roman Everett, Vinisha Soto and Ryan Huerta. Kenai Middle was well represented in the State Spelling Bee by Drake Thomas who tied for 4th place. Our Volleyball “A” team took first place at the Borough Competiton on March 2nd. Kenai’s Cross Country Ski Team had great success in their Borough Meet on March 2nd with the 1st place going to Karl Danielson for the boy’s and Riana Boonstra for the girl’s. Way to go Kenai Middle students!
Mountain View Elementary
Mountain View Elementary early Kindergarten registration for the 2013-2014 school year opens on March 18. Students must be 5 years old by September 1, 2013. Registration forms may be picked up at the Mountain View Office. Kindergarten Parent Orientation will be on Thursday, April 11. Registered students will be invited to visit a Kindergarten classroom on Friday, April 12.
Spring pictures will be taken on Tuesday. Order forms were sent home on Thursday, March 7. Orders may also be placed online at mylifetouch.com. The picture day ID is AK312406Y0. Only those students placing an order will have their picture taken.
The Spring concert for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students will be on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. at Kenai Central High School. The concert is titled “I Hear America Singing!” and is for all students in grades 3-5.
Friday is Hat Day at Mountain View.

Mountain View Elementary was well represented at the district Forensics competition on March 2. Congratulations to Logan Dosko for placing 1st in Interpretive Reading (5th grade), Matthew Grzybowski for placing 3rd in Humorous Poetry (4th grade), and the team of Tylor Brown, Jaiden Burdick, Kai McKibben, Leif Niichel, and Kassandra Renfrow for placing 3rd in Interpretive Reading (5th grade).
Nikiski North Star Elementary

There is still time to place your order for NNS clothing if you are interested. The PTA is taking orders for hoodies, t-shirts and long sleeve t-shirts. All order forms and money can be turned in at the office no later that March 22nd.
The first week of April will be student testing for grades 3 thru 5. We want to emphasize to all of our families how important it is every day and especially during testing that our students get a good night’s rest, eat a good breakfast and attend school on time. There will be more information sent home with your students in the coming weeks.
Kindergarten Visitation is April 19. A parent and new kindergarten student informational meeting is 9:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m. This meeting is for new kindergartners that will be starting school in the fall.
April 19 will be a late start day for current kindergarten students. Start time for current kindergartners will be at 11:00 a.m. Please do not send your kindergartner to school until 11:00 a.m. on this day.
Pre-registration forms have been sent home with students. Forms should be completed and returned to school. By completing and returning the pre-registration form you will be registering your child for the 2013-2014 school year. Kindergarten and new student registration April 1st-April 3rd, 9:00 a.m.—2:30 p.m., this registration is for kindergartners beginning school this fall and all other students who will be new to Redoubt next school year.
Redoubt Elementary 2013-14 Preschool Program — Children must be 4 years old by September 1, 2013 and live in Redoubt’s attendance area. Admission will be based on student need. Complete information and applications are available at the school office.

Here are all the great courses that are coming up.
SBA Prep Course: This course prepares students with test taking skills. It gives students the opportunity to practice all three portions of the test.
Summer School: We have sessions for all ages. There will be two sessions: Session 1 starts:June 3rd-June 27th/Monday-Thursday 10-12. Session 2 starts: July 8th-August 1st.
Jr. High Math: This course gives students the confidence they need for pre-algebra courses! There will be two sessions: Session 1 starts June 3rd-June 27th. Session 2 starts July 8th-August 1st.
Summer Kinder Prep: Research shows that school readiness matters in the long run and that addressing a child’s developmental needs before their first year of school will boost their chances of success. There are two sessions: Session 1 starts June 3rd-July 27th and Session 2 starts July 8th-August 1st. Sessions both run from 12:30-2:30.
Readers Theater: Is your child struggling with reading aloud, does he/she lack fluency expression or comprehension? Join the Study’s Reader’s Theater! This is a great activity that gives your child the confidence to read in front of an audience! Sessions start, March 25th-April 25th. Mondays and Wednesdays 12:30-1:30.
