KBEA offers scholarships
The Kenai Borough Employees Association scholarship committee is accepting applications for four scholarships of $500 each. Scholarships are available to all graduates of the Kenai Peninsula Borough including public schools, private schools and home-schooled students.
Applications are available at any high school counselor’s office or online at www.borough.kenai.ak.us. Applications must be delivered or postmarked by March 29. They can be mailed or dropped off at the Kenai Peninsula Borough, KBEA Scholarship Committee, 144 North Binkley Street, Soldotna AK 99669.
Community service earns college scholarships
The Soldotna Rotary Club will be offering several $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors from Cook Inlet Academy, Skyview, Soldotna, and Ninilchik High Schools as well as homeschool graduates.
The Soldotna Rotary Scholarships are based on the Rotary Motto of “Service Above Self.” Recipients will be selected based on community service performed by the applicant during their high school career.
Applications are available at school counselor or the office of Foster Construction. Applications must be received by April 16. Grade point average or parental financial information is not required.

PEO scholarships offered at KPC
The PEO scholarship application for the 2013-14 school year for $1,500 is available for women who are returning after completing one or more semesters of college and are planning to enroll at the Kenai Peninsula College Soldotna campus. Applications may me picked up at Kenai Peninsula College.
Screenings for infants, preschoolers available
The KPBSD Child Find Program and Frontier Community Services Infant Learning will be offering free screenings for children 5 years old and younger. The screening will be on April 10, 2013 from 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. at Frontier Community Services, Suite 16 in the Red Diamond Center (next to Tarma Grooming). Children’s early development, motor skills, speech, early learning concepts, vision and hearing will be screened. To make an appointment or for more information, call 714-6647.

Mark your calendars early for CIA’s Annual Spring Carnival on April 12. It’s sure to be for the entire family!
April 8-12 are SATs. Please check with individual teachers for specific schedules as all classes will be different. These tests help us determine, as a staff, what areas we need to work on. They are mandatory for all students in Kindergarten through 8th grade. If, for any reason, you think your children will not be here during this week, we ask that you speak with Mrs. Rowley about this ahead of time.
April 19 at 1 p.m. is the Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten Visitation Day. If your child is already in one of these classes and moving up next year, he/she will automatically be included in this event, and parents are welcome to join them! If you have a younger sibling at home who will be starting preschool, please let us know if you will bring your child to join us for this event. If you have friends or family who many have youngsters ready for one of these classes, please encourage them to call us and get on the list so we can be ready for each child who attends! We limit these classes each year to 15 students! If you want to save your child’s spot, you can pay matriculation at the office anytime!

Parents have you wondered how to make the best use of your time and energies at the Annual Curriculum Fair in April? Plan to join in the Curriculum Fair Workshop at the IDEA office on Tuesday, March 26th from 1:30 p.m.-3:00 p.m. Learn strategies for evaluating curriculum choices and connect with the wisdom of other homeschool parents on how to use this resource to your advantage.
First time SBA test takers of all grade levels are invited to the “Get Comfy with the Test” workshop at the Challenger Center on Wednesday, March 27th at 10:00am. This time at the testing facility will help students to become comfortable with the location and protocols of testing.
Standards Based Assessment and High School Graduation Qualifying Exams will be held for all students in grades 3 and up on April 2-5th please call the IDEA office at 260-7555.
Begin to plan now for the Annual Curriculum Fair in Kenai on April 24th at the Kalifornsky Christian Center. Educational vendors, parent workshops and more are all part of this day of encouragement and learning for homeschool families.
Kaleidoscope School of Arts and Science

The After Testing Fun Night committee will meet today at 1:00pm in the KSAS Parent Room. They will be discussing where the funds raised this year will be donated. The After Testing Fun Night will take place April 19th from 5:30pm to 10:30pm for 3rd through 6th grade. More information will be sent home in the Friday Folders.
The APC will meet today at 6:00 p.m. in the school library.
The lottery for the 2013-2014 school year will be held this Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. Parents are allowed to be present for the lottery, but we ask that children not attend. Results will be mailed the week after the lottery and available in the school office.
Report cards will be sent home this Friday in the Friday Folders.
SBA testing will be April 2nd, 3rd and 4th for grades 3rd through 6th. Please make sure your students are well rested and on time to school.
The Kindergarten Spring concert will be held April 4th at 6:30 p.m. in the school gym.
Kalifornsky Beach Elementary
Candidate interviews for the new principal will be held on Tuesday, March 26th at 5:30 pm in the K-Beach library. These interviews are open to public attendance.

Kenai Central High
KCHS is continuing the after school study hall. Students will be able to utilize the study hall from 2:30 – 3:30, Monday – Thursday. This will be a time for students to work on homework and projects or make up work from absences. The NHS will also have tutors available for students who need help in a class. If you are interested in taking advantage of this opportunity, please contact the counseling office.
The basketball team will be having its end of the year banquet in the cafeteria on Monday 6:30 p.m. For more information, contact Coach Rustad or Coach Felchle.
Juniors and seniors, the annual Job Fair is this Wednesday from 10:00-4:00. If you are interested in attending and have not made reservations to attend, contact the counseling office immediately.
Kenai Middle Track begins today for 7th and 8th grade students. 6th grade Volleyball will begin April 8th. Spring Pictures will take place on March 28th at 8 a.m. Incoming 6th graders from K-Beach, Kaleidoscope and Soldotna Montessori will visit our school on April 18th. Mt. View 6th graders will visit Kenai Middle on April 15th, 16th, and 17th. On April 18th from 5:30 p.m. to 7:40 p.m., Kenai Middle will hold an Open House for all incoming students and students considering attending Kenai Middle in the fall of 2013.
Mountain View Elementary
Mountain View Elementary early Kindergarten registration for the 2013-2014 school year open is now open. Students must be 5 years old by September 1, 2013. Registration forms may be picked up at the Mountain View Office. Kindergarten Parent Orientation will be on Thursday, April 11. Registered students will be invited to visit a Kindergarten classroom on April 12.
SBA Testing will take place Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (April 2nd, 3rd, and 4th) for 3rd – 5th grade students. This assessment measures your student’s proficiency in reading, writing, math, and science. Here are a few ways you can support these efforts at home:
■ Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep.
■ Eat a good breakfast.
■ Be on time to school. Testing will begin at 9:15 a.m. We will have an alternate plan for those students arriving late.
■ These tests are not timed. Students will have as much time as they need to complete the test each day.

Screenings will be held at the Kenai Community Library on April 16. In order to be considered, a child must be 4 years old by September 1, 2013 and have a completed application returned to Mountain View Elementary. Nikiski North Star Elementary
The Alaska SBA testing begins next week, the first week of April. These tests will be for students in grades 3 through 5. We want to take this time to emphasize to all our families how important it is every day and especially during testing that our students get a good night’s sleep, a good breakfast, and attend school on time. All students who show up to school on time each of the first three testing days (before 9:00 a.m.) and take the test, will get to participate in a celebration at the Nikiski Pool. Today — Leona from Jostens will distribute graduation orders. Seniors, remember to bring any payment that might still be due on your order. Today is also the deadline for juniors and seniors who plan to go to the Peninsula Job Fair on Wednesday to turn in their required permissions slips to the Counseling Office.
Wednesday — The Peninsula Job Fair will take place at the Soldotna Sports Center. Students should bring copies of their resume and are encouraged to bring their own lunch.
Thursday — Skyview dancers and drama, band and choir students will travel to K-Beach Elementary, Soldotna Montessori Charter School, and Sterling Elementary for Arts in Motion performances.
The deadline to bring items for the spring food drive has been extended to April 4. The Food Bank needs canned proteins like tuna, peanut butter, and chicken, so canned proteins count as 5 cans for the class competition.
Soldotna High School
Soldotna High School is competing against Kenai High School in a Competition Canned Food Drive. This event is sponsored by KPFA in support of the Kenai Peninsula Food Bank. Food may be dropped off at the front office for this event. Individual advisories with the highest percentages can win root beer float parties. The contest runs for two weeks after spring break.
Congratulations to foreign exchange student Marie Frei for her yearbook title page artwork. She will receive a free yearbook for winning the yearbook art contest. Thanks to everyone who submitted artwork.
Soldotna High School Prom 2013 will occur April 13th. Promenade will begin at 7:30 p.m., with the dance commencing at 8:30 p.m. Ticket sales will begin on today and will continue until April 12th . Tickets will be sold at break time and during lunch. The cost is $25 per ticket. Tickets will not be sold during state testing, April 2nd-April 4th. All tickets must be purchased before prom and must be presented at the door to get into the dance. All sales are final. No returns, refunds, or replacements will be given.
Each ticket will come with a gold or silver mask. For an additional $3.00, all ticket-holders may attend a mask decorating session in the art room on April 8th, 9th, or 10th from 2:30-3:30. Soldotna High School students that plan to invite a guest must obtain a guest request form from the office and hand the completed form to Mr. Graham by 2:30 p.m. on April 10th.
Are you interested in seeing the prom decorations before the big dance? Would you like priority seating for promenade to make sure you get the “good” seat you want? Well, here’s your opportunity. Tickets may be purchased for $5.00 a person starting April 1st. This will get you a tour of the prom decorations and preferred seating in the auditorium before the doors open to the general public. To take advantage of this you must arrive between 6:50 and 7:10 on April 13th. Doors to the general public will open at 7:15 and we cannot guarantee your seating after that. General admission to the promenade is a suggested donation of $2.00 per person. For members of the public that would like to attend promenade tickets will be $2.00 at the door. Only 225 Sneak-A-Peek tickets will be sold at the front office of Soldotna High School during the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Soldotna Middle School
Track Begins Today! Practice is from 2:30 – 4:00 p.m. All students who wish to participate must turn in the required sports forms in order to practice. These forms can be picked up at the Front Office or found online on the Soldotna Middle School KPBSD Web Homepage http://soldotnamiddleschool.blogs.kpbsd.k12.ak.us/wpmu/ > Spartan Sports > Required Sports Paperwork > Forms 1-4. Melinda Anderson was chosen as the March 8th Grade Chamber Student of the Month. She will be honored at the Soldotna Chamber of Commerce luncheon on Tuesday, March 26 at Froso’s Restaurant at noon. Congratulations Melinda!
SBA Testing for all 7th and 8th Grade students in Reading/Writing/Math will be April 2, 3, 4. If you know your student will be absent from school any or all of these days, please contact the front office at 260-2500 as soon as possible to make arrangements for alternate testing dates.
The last Site Council Meeting for the 2012-2013 school year will be April 15 at 3:30 pm in the SMS Library.
Soldotna Middle School will have a regular school day on Friday, April 19 (make-up day due to the school closure on January 14). Buses will transport students as usual.
