Constructive Career Day planned

Alaska Construction Career Day will take place April 30 at the Soldotna Sports Center. Registration forms are available from school counselors and career resource advisers and are due by April 23. The event includes interactive exhibits, trade industry displays, and hands-on equipment demonstrations and activities. Session 1, from 8:30 a.m. to noon, is for Kenai, Soldotna, Nikiski and Skyview high schools; Session 2, from 1:30-3:30 p.m., is for Homer, Seward, private, home-school and rural school students. Greatland Adventure Academy enrollment open

Enrollment has opened for Greatland Adventure Academy, a newly formed charter school to be located in Soldotna for 7th and 8th grades where movement, music and time outdoors enhances learning. Enrollment will be open during the week from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It closes Friday. For more information email

Sterling Elementary to offer preschool

Sterling Elementary will be offering Preschool for the 2013-2014 school year if at least 10 students enroll. Students must be 4 years old by September 1, 2013. In order for a child to attend Preschool, they must go through a screening, which will take place on April 17 in the Sterling Preschool room. Please be sure to get your application in now as well as schedule a screening time. Contact the school office at 262-4944 for more information. Also, please spread the word by letting others know who may have an eligible preschooler.

Community service earns college scholarships

The Soldotna Rotary Club will be offering several $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors from Cook Inlet Academy, Skyview, Soldotna, and Ninilchik High Schools as well as homeschool graduates.

The Soldotna Rotary Scholarships are based on the Rotary Motto of “Service Above Self.” Recipients will be selected based on community service performed by the applicant during their high school career.

Applications are available at school counselor or the office of Foster Construction. Applications must be received by April 16. Grade point average or parental financial information is not required.

PEO scholarships offered

The PEO scholarship application for the 2013-14 school year for $1,500 is available for women who are returning after completing one or more semesters of college and are planning to enroll at the Kenai Peninsula College Soldotna campus. Applications may me picked up at Kenai Peninsula College.

Screenings for infants, preschoolers available

The KPBSD Child Find Program and Frontier Community Services Infant Learning will be offering free screenings for children 5 years old and younger. The screening will be on Wednesday from 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. at Frontier Community Services, Suite 16 in the Red Diamond Center (next to Tarma Grooming). Children’s early development, motor skills, speech, early learning concepts, vision and hearing will be screened. To make an appointment or for more information, call 714-6647.

Career and technical education

KPBSD Career and Tech Department is offering free after school academies to train students in the Welding and Medical Field.

Any high school student is able to participate in any of the academies. If a student successfully completes the 60 hour academy they will receive 1/2 practical art credit. Transportation may be provided if needed.

■ Welding Academy at Workforce Development Center (WDC-located behind KCHS): Summer welding academy with Mr. Widaman will be starting May 29th-June 7th, weekdays from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

■ Emergency Trauma Technician (ETT) Summer Academy. School location and class dates TBA. This course will cover all areas required to receive certification as an Emergency Medical Technician. The last week of class will be for review and the final exam. If you pass the exam you’ll receive your certification and an ETT patch.

Funding for the Alaska Construction Academies comes from a grant from the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development, the Alaska Department of Commerce and Economic Development and The Alaska Youth First Program.

Cook Inlet Academy

Mark your calendars for CIA’s Annual Spring Carnival on Friday, 6-9 p.m. It will be fun for the entire family, so plan to attend!

There will be no Sequel on April 12 or May 9. Thank you for planning ahead.

This week is SATs. They are mandatory for all students in Kindergarten through 8th grade. Please check with individual teachers for specific schedules as all classes will be different. These tests help us determine where we need to improve. If, for any reason, you think your children will not be here during this week, we ask that you speak with Mrs. Rowley about this ahead of time.

April 19th is the Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten Visitation day from 1:00 – 2:15 p.m. If your child will be moving up to one of these classes, they will automatically be included in the visitation activities and we invite parents to join us for this time. If you know people in our community who are considering CIA as an option for their children next year, have them call the office for more information.

We are now open for re-enrollment for 2013-2014 school year. If you are planning to have your child at CIA next year, you can save your spot now by paying matriculation. You can also save $25 per child by paying by April 30.

Kaleidoscope School of Arts and Science

The K-Beach Student Council bake sale raised a total of $93.57, which will be donated towards the purchase of a new caribou mascot. Way to go! Thank you to everyone who supported this event!

Kenai Middle

We would like to send our congratulations to Mackenzie Lindeman who is the Kenai Middle School recipient of the Masonic Student Award for the 2012/2013 school year. This award focuses on academic excellence, student leadership, and character traits. The award presentation is Friday, April 26th at 6:30pm in the Kenai High School Auditorium. Again, congratulations to Mackenzie and her family. Way to go!

We would like to recognize our Character Counts winners for the week: Caitlyn Burdick and Chase Gillies. We are proud of you!

Our annual volunteer luncheon will be Wednesday from 12:30 to 1:30. We would love to have our KMS parents attend this special event. There will be entertainment, door prizes, and a wonderful lunch provided by our staff. Please note the correction to our previous announcement concerning Elementary school visitations. KBeach 6th graders will visit Kenai Middle on April 16th at 11:50 am. Mt. View Elementary 5th graders will visit on April 15th, 16th, and 17th. And other area Elementary schools will visit on April 18th. The evening of April 18th from 5:30 to 7:30 KMS will host an Open House and Barbeque for all returning and new students planning to attend our school in the fall.

Mountain View Elementary

Mountain View Elementary early Kindergarten registration for the 2013-2014 school year open is now open. Students must be 5 years old by September 1, 2013. Registration forms may be picked up at the Mountain View Office. Kindergarten Parent Orientation will be on Thursday, April 11. Registered students will be invited to visit a Kindergarten classroom on Friday, April 12.

Applications are available for the 2013-2014 Mountain View Pre-K Program.

Screenings will be held at the Kenai Community Library on April 16. In order to be considered, a child must be 4 years old by September 1, 2013 and have a completed application returned to Mountain View Elementary. Pre-orders for the Mt. View yearbook are now being accepted. There will only be 100 yearbooks available for $16.00 each– order yours now! Order forms were sent home on Friday and are also available at the office.

Parent input forms for student placement for the 2013-2014 school year are available now at the office. For parent input to be considered in the placement process this form needs to be returned to the office no later than April 26.

For the first time in the history of the Nikiski Track and Field team, we will have an athlete, Seth Carstens, entered into the pentathlon at the Big C relays which is the biggest track meet in the state. This event has been in existence since 2008 and athletes are selected not only based on athletic abilities, but also academic standing and community involvement. Nikiski North Star Elementary

April 17th NNS will have Kindergarten registration and orientation. The times you may chose from are 9:30-10:30 a.m. or 1:00-2:00 p.m. If your child will be five years old by September 1st, bring them along to have some fun while you enroll them at Nikiski North Star. Wednesday is the deadline to get your application turned in to the office for our Ttile 1 Pre-K program for next school year. This is a free program for eligible students. Pre-K screenings will be held on Thursday, April 11th at the Nikiski Community Center. Your screening appointment wil be made when your application is received by the school. Prospective students must be 4 years old by September 1st.

Redoubt Elementary School

Kindergarten Visitation will be held April 19 at Redoubt Elementary. A parent and new kindergarten student informational meeting will be from 9:30-10:30 a.m. This meeting is for new kindergartners that will be starting school in the fall.

April 19 will be a late start day for current kindergarten students. Start time for current kindergartners will be at 11 a.m.

To register for Redoubt Elementary’s 2013-14 preschool program, children must be 4 years old by Sept. 1 and live in Redoubt’s attendance area. Admission will be based on student need. Complete information and applications are available at the school office.

Yearbooks are on sale. Yearbook order forms have been sent home. Yearbook cost is $15. Pre-order by April 10 to be sure you receive one. Make checks payable to Redoubt Elementary.

Parents wishing to provide input regarding their child’s class placement for next school year may complete the form available at the school office. River City Academy

Our students worked very diligently on their SBAs this week. Thanks to all the parents who donated snacks and other treats.

New Advisory classes start on Monday. Check the schedules in the hall to see if your class or advisor has changed.

Kenai Peninsula College will be at RCA on April 19 at 8 a.m. administer the Accuplacer test to current juniors. This will be a great opportunity for juniors or accelerated sophomores to get their paperwork in place for Jump Start classes at KPC this summer or next fall.

Are you interested in learning more about River City Academy? RCA students will be hosting our annual Open House on April 15 at 6 p.m. at RCA. Students, parents, community members and families who want to learn more about River City Academy and the unique small school environment we offer are encouraged to attend. Applications for next year will be available at the open house. New students may also register to attend our Shadow Day on April 17 from 8 a.m. to noon. Transportation is not provided. The Shadow Day will allow students an opportunity to learn more about RCA, sit in on classes and participate in learning activities. RCA is accepting applications for students in grades 7-12 who are interested in a different school experience. Students who demonstrate skills in being self-motivating, self-managing and self-advocating are often an ideal fit for RCA. The performance-based model offers students choice in their education, which maintaining a consistent standards-based curriculum. Skyview High

Congratulations to Ryder Galic and Marcus Thornburgh for placing 2nd and 3rd respectively in the Construction competition at the State SkillsUSA meet held recently in Anchorage.

Tuesday – All 10th grade students will be in the library for the Standards Based Assessment Science test.

Thursday – Super Activity Day: There are changes to the class schedule – 5th and 6th periods will be after lunch. There will be no 7th period class.

Saturday – This year’s Prom theme is “Moonlight Masquerade” and it takes place from 7:30-10:30 p.m. in the commons. The public is invited to view promenade in the gym beginning at 6:30 p.m. The cost for promenade is $3.00. Tickets for Prom are $35 per person and are available for purchase during lunch. No tickets will be available at the door.

Soldotna High

Soldotna High School Prom 2013 will occur Saturday. Promenade will begin at 7:30 p.m., with the dance commencing at 8:30 p.m. Ticket sales will continue until Friday. Tickets will be sold at break time and during lunch. The cost is $25.00 per ticket. All tickets must be purchased before prom and must be presented at the door to get into the dance. All sales are final. No returns, refunds, or replacements will be given.

Each ticket will come with a gold or silver mask. For an additional $3.00, all ticket-holders may attend a mask decorating session in the art room on April 8th, 9th, or 10th from 2:30- 3:30. Soldotna High School students that plan to invite a guest must obtain a guest request form from the office and hand the completed form to Mr. Graham by 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Are you interested in seeing the prom decorations before the big dance? Would you like priority seating for promenade to make sure you get the “good” seat you want? Well, here’s your opportunity. Tickets may be purchased for $5.00 a person starting today. This will get you a tour of the prom decorations and preferred seating in the auditorium before the doors open to the general public. To take advantage of this you must arrive between 6:50 and 7:10 on April 13th. Doors to the general public will open at 7:15 and we cannot guarantee your seating after that. General admission to the promenade is a suggested donation of $2.00 per person. For members of the public that would like to attend promenade tickets will be $2.00 at the door. Only 225 Sneak-A-Peek tickets will be sold at the front office of Soldotna High School during the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

SoHi will be locking the parking lot entrance door from 7:50 a.m. to noon and 12:35 p.m. to 2:25 p.m.

Also note that during school hours the only open door will be the Front Entrance Commons/Flag Pole doors. The above is to improve our overall school security.

SoHi will be having school on April 19th for missing January 14th.

There are two ways to order a transcript.

If you need a transcript sent to a college or NCAA or a similar agency, then you will need to log on to: to order transcripts to be sent. The request is then forwarded to SoHi. After processing, it then goes through cyberspace to get to its destination. All transcripts that are headed for NCAA, colleges, etc. have to be processed this way.

A final transcript is one that shows your second semester grades. If you order your transcript when we are in second semester, you will need to make sure you choose “next grading period” when you go on to Parchment. That way your transcript request will wait until the grades are in at the end of the year before it is sent.

Soldotna Middle

Science SBA Testing for all 8th Grade students will be on Tuesday. Test taking tips for students: Please be on time to school; Get plenty of sleep; Eat a good breakfast.

Soldotna Middle School will have a regular school day on April 19 (make-up day). Buses will transport students as usual.

The last Site Council Meeting for the 2012-2013 school year will be April 22 at 3:30 p.m. in the SMS Library.

Soldotna Montessori Charter School

There are 3 open seats on the SMCS Academic Policy Committee. Open Positions include a 1-year term and two 3-year terms.

Applications are available in the office. Applications are due by April 19.

Students in grades 1 – 3 will be exploring the world of hands-on science with science consultant Liz Burck for the month of April.

Sixth graders at SMCS will begin 2 weeks of swimming lessons on April 8. Lessons will be conducted at So Hi every afternoon through April 19.

Sixth graders will also participate in the annual “Middle School Boot Camp”, a one-week series of activities and scheduling designed to simulate the middle school day and middle school expectations.

The annual band concert for Soldotna Montessori and Soldotna Elementary will be held at 6 p.m. on April 23 in the gym. The annual spring music program for SMCS will be held at 6 p.m. on April 18.

The Study

Spring is in the air and it is not too late to start thinking about summer activities for your kids! Here is the tentative schedule for summer at The Study! The Study will have two sessions of Summer School for a variety of ages: Session 1 runs from June 3rd-June 27th, Monday through Thursday from 10-12. Second Session runs from July 8th-August 1st. The Study will offer Mini Kinder Prep, this is a four week program that prepares students for Kindergarten. Two sessions, starting June 3rd through June 27th and Session 2 starts July 8th-Aug. 1st (12:30-2:30). Yearlong Kinder Prep for 2013-2014 is almost filled already! This course prepares your child with the tools he/she needs to enter school, including technology and Spanish! Meets Monday-Thursday from 10-12starting in August.

Jr. High Math teaches fractions, decimals, ratios along with basic geometry and algebra. Session 1 starts June 17th-July 11th with Session 2 starting July 15th-August 8th. Monday through Thursday 12-2. Mastery of Multiplication will be offered twice this summer. Session 1 starts June 3rd through July 2nd with the second session starting July 8th through August 6th. Tuesdays, 12:30-2.

Excellence in Writing will only be offered once starting: June 3rd - July 3rd. If your student need science, The Study offers Alaska Sea Studies for Kinder through third grade starting June 4th-June 27th from 2-3:30.

Are there girls in your daughter’s life that just aren’t very kind? The Study is doing a mini-workshop for junior high girls that focuses on the book, One Hundred Dresses. This workshop will address relationships between Junior High Girls and their peers. Students will learn by role playing, discussions and real experiences. June 3rd-June 6th from 3-4.
