PEO scholarships offered
The PEO scholarship application for the 2013-14 school year for $1,500 is available for women who are returning after completing one or more semesters of college and are planning to enroll at the Kenai Peninsula College Soldotna campus. Applications may me picked up at Kenai Peninsula College.
Builders Association accepting scholarship applications
The Kenai Peninsula Builders Association will accept applications for the 2013 Shelby Johnson Memorial Scholarship. Up to four $1,000 scholarships will be awarded. Scholarships are available to individuals 21 or younger who have graduated from high school, received a GED or are a 2013 Kenai Peninsula Borough School District graduate, including private and home schooled students. Applicants must plan to attend school within the state and be pursuing a building-related career. Applications are available from any high school guidance counselors office, on the KPBSD website and the KPBA website (www.kenaipeninsulabuilders.com). Application deadline is May 7. Career and technical education
KPBSD Career and Tech Department is offering free after school academies to train students in the Welding and Medical Field.
Any high school student is able to participate in any of the academies. If a student successfully completes the 60 hour academy they will receive 1/2 practical art credit. Transportation may be provided if needed.
■ Welding Academy at Workforce Development Center (WDC-located behind KCHS): Summer welding academy with Mr. Widaman will be starting May 29th-June 7th, weekdays from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
■ Emergency Trauma Technician (ETT) Summer Academy. School location and class dates TBA. This course will cover all areas required to receive certification as an Emergency Medical Technician. The last week of class will be for review and the final exam. If you pass the exam you’ll receive your certification and an ETT patch.

Funding for the Alaska Construction Academies comes from a grant from the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development, the Alaska Department of Commerce and Economic Development and The Alaska Youth First Program.

Cook Inlet Academy
CIA is now open for re-enrollment for 2013-2014 school year. If you are planning to have your child at CIA next year, you can save your spot now by paying matriculation.

Tuesday is our Annual High School awards night to honor our outstanding scholars. This evening will begin at 6 p.m. with our 2013 National Honor Society and National Junior Honor Society Induction Ceremony. This evening is required for all high school students, as well as for junior who are being inducted into NJHS. This will be a semi-formal affair and we ask everyone to dress accordingly. You won’t want to miss this special night! Invite your family and friends!
On Thursday there will be no Sequel, thank you for planning ahead.
Sunday will be our Graduation Ceremony starting at 3 p.m.
May 16th, students will be dismissed at noon for Teacher In-Service Day.
May 17th is the last day of school and students will be dismissed after Awards Chapel starting at 8:30 a.m.

Kaleidoscope School of Arts and Science
The last PTA meeting of the year will be held May 9th at 5:00 p.m. Please come and help us say thank you to the current board and welcome in the new board.
The Carnival/End of the Year BBQ will be held on May 17th from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Many volunteers will be needed! Watch your Friday Folders for more info.
Please come help us celebrate Mrs. Larson as she retires after over 30 years of teaching! A reception will be held on Wednesday from 4:00-6:00 p.m. in the Kaleidoscope library. There will be a New Parent Informational Meeting on May 8th at 8:15 a.m. in the school library. If you have not attended a meeting and you have a student enrolling in Kaleidoscope, please plan to attend.
The 5th and 6th grade bands will perform their Spring Band concert on May 9th at 6:00 p.m. in the school gym. An encore performance will be held at an all school assembly on May 10th at 9:15 a.m.
The calendar is full of field trips for the next two weeks. Please make sure your volunteer requirements are done before volunteering on a field trip. If you plan to drive your child home from a field trip, make sure the appropriate paperwork is filled out. Please contact the office if you have any questions.

Kalifornsky Beach Elementary
The KPBSD Film Festival was held at Sohi on April 18th. Out of 44 films entered, 5 films were selected to be shown from K-Beach Elementary. Movies selected to be shown at the festival were as follows:
‘Football Tragedy’, starring Corbin Wirz, Marceles Sepluveda, Cade Appelhans, and Hudson Metcalf;
‘Meaning of Friends’, starring Onaca Daniels, Tieran Evans, and Lindsay Ward, with minor roles by Blake Smith, Wyatt Medcoff, Tera Heathers, and Liam Miller;
‘WRDH News’, starring Wyatt Medcoff, Ryan Hill, Danielle Kjostad, and Hunter Beck;
‘Monster in Seaview School’, starring Charly Morton, Jonas Zorn, and Katelynn Kimes; and
‘Charlie Chin at the Movies’, starring Owen Rolph. Owen’s movie won 2nd place for the People’s Choice Award. Way to go!

Mr. Daniels’s class is full of inventors. They have embarked on a quest to invent a tool or device to fill a need or to make work easier. They will be scored on their creativity and their inventor’s log notes. On Wednesday from 12:30-1:45, the students will bring in their inventions to show and share with the class. Parents are invited join in the fun! The students are also learning how to conduct research and turn their research into writing. They have studied polar bears and have written their findings in a class report. Next, they will research their own mammal and practice what they have learned.
Our Student Council is sponsoring a fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The fundraiser, “Pennies for Patients” runs through Wednesday. Students may bring in pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters to donate to help fight cancer. Thank you for supporting our efforts!

Thirteen days to go to summer! It is countdown time. Our annual Spring Choir Concert will be held on Tuesday at KCHS auditorium at 7 p.m. Friday, our Leadership class will host our last dance and activity night for the year.
Teacher appreciation will be on May 13th. The Site Council will meet on May 14th at 5 p.m. in the KMS library.
The annual sixth grade camp will be May 15th thru the 17th at Victory Bible Camp in Sutton.
Eighth grade Farewell ceremony will be in our gym on May 17th at 8 a.m.

Kenai Middle recently purchased 40 mountain bikes for our students to enjoy during PE and other classes. We are looking forward to putting these bikes to good use!
Mountain View Elementary

Attention all 1st and 2nd graders mark your calendars, it is Bike Rodeo time!
May 16th will be Bicycle Safety Instruction. The Kenai Police Department will send an officer to teach and instruct students on Safe Bicycle Tips. Friday, May 17th bring your bicycle and helmet to school and ride the obstacle course. You will be able to have your bicycle checked and registered with a sticker. Outgrown or don’t have a helmet? No worries, helmets can be purchased for $5.00 and will be personally fitted for your student thanks to Safe Kids through Central Peninsula Hospital. Get ready for fun!

On May 14, Redoubt will be hosting a Bike Rodeo from 4:30-6:00 p.m. Bring your bike and helmet. You must have a helmet to participate in the Bike Rodeo.

The Soldotna High School Child Development class is having a free daycare Thursday and Friday from 12:45-2:15 p.m. Games, crafts, snacks, and other activities will be provided. Children must be potty trained and between 2-5 years of age. Registration is full at this time.
SoHi will be locking the parking lot entrance door from 7:50 a.m. to noon and 12:35 p.m. to 2:25 p.m.
Also note that during school hours the only open door will be the Front Entrance Commons/Flag Pole doors. The above is to improve our overall school security.
There are two ways to order a transcript.
If you need a transcript sent to a college or NCAA or a similar agency, then you will need to log on to: www.parchment.com to order transcripts to be sent. The request is then forwarded to SoHi. After processing, it then goes through cyberspace to get to its destination. All transcripts that are headed for NCAA, colleges, etc. have to be processed this way.
A final transcript is one that shows your second semester grades. If you order your transcript when we are in second semester, you will need to make sure you choose “next grading period” when you go on to Parchment. That way your transcript request will wait until the grades are in at the end of the year before it is sent.

We know it is almost summer but it is not too late to start thinking about Fall Courses! This fall The Study will offer for credit the following courses: Alaska Studies, Algebra1 and 2, and Spanish 1,2, and 3. Upon completion of the course, transcripts will be sent to the attending school and parents. Spring is in the air and it is not too late to start thinking about summer activities for your kids! Here is the tentative schedule for summer at The Study! The Study will have two sessions of Summer School for a variety of ages: Session 1 runs from June 3rd-June 27th, Monday through Thursday from 10-12. Second Session runs from July 8th-August 1st. The Study will offer Mini Kinder Prep, a four week program that prepares students for Kindergarten. Two sessions, starting June 3rd through June 27th and Session 2 starts July 8th-Aug. 1st (12:30-2:30).
Yearlong Kinder Prep for 2013-2014 is almost filled already! This course prepares your child with the tools he/she needs to enter school, including technology and Spanish! Meets Monday-Thursday from 10-12 starting in August.
Jr. High Math! This one fills up quickly. This course teaches fractions, decimals, ratios along with basic geometry and algebra. Session 1 starts June 17th-July 11th with Session 2 starting July 15th-August 8th. Monday through Thursday 12-2.
Mastery of Multiplication will be offered twice this summer. Session 1 starts June 3rd through July 2nd with the second session starting July 8th through August 6th. Tuesdays, 12:30-2.
Excellence in Writing will only be offered once starting: June 3rd - July 3rd. If your student need science, The Study offers Alaska Sea Studies for Kinder through third grade starting June 4th-June 27th from 2-3:30.
Are there girls in your daughter’s life that just aren’t very kind? The Study is doing a mini-workshop for junior high girls that focuses on the book, One Hundred Dresses. This workshop will address relationships between Junior High Girls and their peers. Students will learn by role playing, discussions and real experiences. June 3rd-June 6th from 3-4.
Look for The Study at the following events: “Unpluugged for Summer” at Soldotna Middle School, May 11th from 11-4. Lemonade Day, May 11th. This mini-course is a fun business education that helps youth understand how to start, own and operate a business. If you would like your child to participate call 262-6227. Look for The Study at the Kenai River Festival on both June 8th and 9th. Finally, look for The Study in the Progress Day parade.
