The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District Board of Education meets at 7 p.m. in Assembly Chambers in the borough building, at 148 N. Binkley Street in Soldotna (unless otherwise noted).

Career and technical education

KPBSD Career and Tech Department is offering free after school academies to train students in the Welding and Medical Field.

Any high school student is able to participate in any of the academies. If a student successfully completes the 60 hour academy they will receive 1/2 practical art credit. Transportation may be provided if needed.

■ Welding Academy at Workforce Development Center (WDC-located behind KCHS): Summer welding academy with Mr. Widaman will be starting May 29th-June 7th, weekdays from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

■ Emergency Trauma Technician (ETT) Summer Academy. School location and class dates TBA. This course will cover all areas required to receive certification as an Emergency Medical Technician. The last week of class will be for review and the final exam. If you pass the exam you’ll receive your certification and an ETT patch.

Funding for the Alaska Construction Academies comes from a grant from the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development, the Alaska Department of Commerce and Economic Development and The Alaska Youth First Program.

Connections Home-school

Connections is now enrolling for the 2013/2014 school year. Call now to make an appointment.

Connections graduation will be held at Soldotna High School on May 23 at 4:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome!

Cook Inlet Academy

CIA is now open for re-enrollment for 2013-2014 school year. If you are planning to have your child at CIA next year, you can save your spot now by paying matriculation.

May 16th, students will be dismissed at noon for Teacher In-Service Day.

May 17th is the last day of school and students will be dismissed after Awards Chapel starting at 8:30 a.m.

Please make sure to check out Sycamore for detailed information regarding important school information and announcements, especially if your student is involved in athletics. All practice information and anything pertaining to sports will be posted here. If you need assistance with accessing Sycamore, please do not hesitate to contact the office for assistance.

Kaleidoscope School of Arts and Science

The Carnival/End of the Year BBQ will be held on Friday from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Many volunteers will be needed! Watch your Friday Folders for more info.

The APC meeting was moved to today at 4:00 p.m. Please come help us welcome in the new APC board.

Field day will be held this week for all grades.

May 14th — 1st and 2nd grade from 2:00 to 3:30.

May 15th — Kindergarten from 2:15 to 3:15.

May 16th — 3rd through 6th grade from 1:45 to 3:30.

Please make sure your child dresses for outdoor gym activities. Parent volunteers will be needed to make this event a success. Please let Mrs. Calvert know if you are available to help.

Science Camp will be held Friday for 3rd through 6th grade and May 20th for Kindergarten through 2nd grade. Please Contact Mr. J if you are available to help.

Officers from the Kenai Police Department will be at Kaleidoscope on May 20th to teach students about bike safety. Bike Rodeo is May 21st. Students in grades 1 through 6 should plan to bring their bikes to school on the 21st and park them outside by their classroom window. Please make sure to label all bikes and helmets with first and last name. Helmets will be available for $5 for all students to purchase.

There will be an all school BBQ on May 21st provided by the KSAS PTA and the Moose Lodge. Students will not need a lunch.

The last day that breakfast will be served at school is Friday. Be sure to thank our breakfast volunteers!

The last day for hot lunch will be May 20th.

Kalifornsky Beach Elementary

The Elementary Math Bowl was held in Seward on Friday, May 3rd. K-Beach was well represented by 4 awesome teams: The Calculator Conquerors – Sissy Williams, Blake Smith, Emma Mullet, Grace Wahl and Braden Lemm; 97% Scientists – Laura Green, Kilei England, Liam Miller and Hudson Metcalf; The Romans Who Like Numerals – Katelynn Kimes, Wyatt Harvey, Ryan Hill, Wyatt Medcoff and Kyla Smith; and The Mathmateers – Patrick Kaminski, Tyler Neill, Marceles Sepulveda and Dallas Wilson. Way to go! Congratulations to all participants.

Congratulations to all 5th Grade DARE Graduates and to Ryan Hill for writing the winning essay. Ryan’s essay was chosen out of 150 essays written and he was awarded a brand new Trek Bike. A big thank you to Officer Brennan and the Soldotna Police Department for continuing to bring the DARE Program into the elementary schools.

Our very own Trevor Bagley got 3rd place in points for the 11-12 year old boys at the huge swim meet this past weekend for the Kenai Piranhas. Way to go Trevor!

KCHS Choir’s 41st annual ‘Pop’s Concert is this Tuesday at 7 p.m. Enjoy KCHS Choir students at their best — singing their favorite popular songs.

Kenai Middle

Today is Teacher Appreciation day at KMS!

Our Site Council meeting will be Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Our 6th graders will be going to their annual camp Wednesday-Friday.

Eighth-grade Farewell will be on Friday at 8 a.m. It will last for approximately 1.5 hours with punch and cake to follow and then an 8th grade talent show. We encourage parents and community members to attend.

Congratulations to our track team! The boys took 1st place at Boroughs and girls took 2nd place.

Mountain View Elementary

We have a limited number of yearbooks available at the office for $16.00 each.

There will be a PTA meeting on Tuesday at 3:45 p.m. in the Staff Lounge.

There will be a band/choir concert on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. in the gym at Mountain View.

Attention all 1st and 2nd graders mark your calendars, it is Bike Rodeo time!

Thursday will be Bicycle Safety Instruction. The Kenai Police Department will send an officer to teach and instruct students on Safe Bicycle Tips. Friday, bring your bicycle and helmet to school and ride the obstacle course. You will be able to have your bicycle checked and registered with a sticker. Outgrown or don’t have a helmet? No worries, helmets can be purchased for $5.00 and will be personally fitted for your student thanks to Safe Kids through Central Peninsula Hospital. Get ready for fun! If you would like to help with the bike rodeo, please call the office at 283-8600.

There will be a Site Council meeting on May 21st at 4:00 p.m. in the Library.

Please check the Lost and Found outside the school office before the end of the school year. There are a lot of coats, hats, and gloves just waiting to be claimed.

Please try to repay borrowed lunch money before school is out.

May 22 is the last day of school. Students will be participating in field day activities. We will be having a picnic for the students with chips, cookies, and juice provided by the PTA and hot dogs being provided and cooked by the Kenai Moose Lodge.

Nikiski North Star Elementary

Congratulations to the Character Counts! Students of the Month for April: Jameson Harney, Sabena Christofferson, Savannah Ley, Noah Douglas, Brooklynn Biamonte, Dylan Richie, Delen Byrd, Jasmine Durfee, Savanna Stock, Aspen Hooper, America Jeffreys, Levi Kimbell, Carter Eiter, Brody Dupuis, Wyatt Stormer, Avery White, Everett Chamberlain and Isabella Smith. These students were treated to a pizza lunch with Principal Callahan.

There will be a PTA meeting today at 3:45 p.m. in the staff lounge.

The third through fifth grade classes will have a music concert on Wednesday. This concert will be held at Nikiski Middle High School and will begin at 6:30 pm. Please call the school at 776-2600 if you have any questions.

Hershey Track and Field Day will be held on Friday at the Nikiski High School track. If your child is participating, please remember to send them with snacks, water, and some warm clothing depending on the weather conditions. If you have any questions, please call North Pen Rec at 776-8800.

Redoubt Elementary

On Tuesday, Redoubt will be hosting a Bike Rodeo from 4:30-6:00 p.m. Bring your bike and helmet. You must have a helmet to participate in the Bike Rodeo.

Bring the whole family! There will be bike tune-ups. New helmets will be available for purchase at $5.00 each, sponsored by PTA. We will need volunteers for this event, please contact the school office if you can help.

Last Day of school is May 22nd, with Student Awards Assembly, School Picnic and Field Day. Volunteers are needed to help with the picnic. Please call the school office at 260-4300 if you can help. Students are asked to bring $2.00 for the picnic lunch. If your child does not like hotdogs please make sure to pack a cold lunch for them. No school hot lunch will be served on picnic day, hotdogs only.

Soldotna High

SoHi will be locking the parking lot entrance door from 7:50 a.m. to noon and 12:35 p.m. to 2:25 p.m.

Also note that during school hours the only open door will be the Front Entrance Commons/Flag Pole doors. The above is to improve our overall school security.

There are two ways to order a transcript.

If you need a transcript sent to a college or NCAA or a similar agency, then you will need to log on to: to order transcripts to be sent. The request is then forwarded to SoHi. After processing, it then goes through cyberspace to get to its destination. All transcripts that are headed for NCAA, colleges, etc. have to be processed this way.

A final transcript is one that shows your second semester grades. If you order your transcript when we are in second semester, you will need to make sure you choose “next grading period” when you go on to Parchment. That way your transcript request will wait until the grades are in at the end of the year before it is sent.

Soldotna Middle

End of the School Year Events:

Tuesda — SMS Awards Night and Final Band And Choir Concert. Award presentations to start at 7:00 p.m. in the Soldotna Middle School Large Gym. Performances from the SMS Band, Choir and Drumline to follow.

May 20 — Students receive purchased yearbooks. Yearbooks still on sale at the Front Office for $35.

May 21 — Student Checkout, 7th and 8th Grade. Return classroom textbooks, pay outstanding fees, clean out lockers.

May 22 — Last Day of School for students! 8:00 a.m. — Celebration of Academic Achievement for 8th Grade Students, SMS large gym, with a reception to follow in the SMS small gym. Parents, family, and friends are invited to attend! Noon to 2:15 p.m. — Lunch provided for all students! Talent Show and school-wide field day to follow.

We know it is almost summer but it is not too late to start thinking about Fall Courses! This fall The Study will offer for credit the following courses: Alaska Studies, Algebra1 and 2, and Spanish 1,2, and 3. Upon completion of the course, transcripts will be sent to the attending school and parents. Spring is in the air and it is not too late to start thinking about summer activities for your kids! Here is the tentative schedule for summer at The Study! The Study will have two sessions of Summer School for a variety of ages: Session 1 runs from June 3rd-June 27th, Monday through Thursday from 10-12. Second Session runs from July 8th-August 1st. The Study will offer Mini Kinder Prep, a four week program that prepares students for Kindergarten. Two sessions, starting June 3rd through June 27th and Session 2 starts July 8th-Aug. 1st (12:30-2:30).

Yearlong Kinder Prep for 2013-2014 is almost filled already! This course prepares your child with the tools he/she needs to enter school, including technology and Spanish! Meets Monday-Thursday from 10-12 starting in August.

Jr. High Math! This one fills up quickly. This course teaches fractions, decimals, ratios along with basic geometry and algebra. Session 1 starts June 17th-July 11th with Session 2 starting July 15th-August 8th. Monday through Thursday 12-2.

Mastery of Multiplication will be offered twice this summer. Session 1 starts June 3rd through July 2nd with the second session starting July 8th through August 6th. Tuesdays, 12:30-2.

Excellence in Writing will only be offered once starting: June 3rd - July 3rd. If your student need science, The Study offers Alaska Sea Studies for Kinder through third grade starting June 4th-June 27th from 2-3:30.

Are there girls in your daughter’s life that just aren’t very kind? The Study is doing a mini-workshop for junior high girls that focuses on the book, One Hundred Dresses. This workshop will address relationships between Junior High Girls and their peers. Students will learn by role playing, discussions and real experiences. June 3rd-June 6th from 3-4.
