Posted: May 19, 2013 - 8:38am  |  Updated: May 19, 2013 - 9:09am

With more than $33 million of new construction coming to fruition this summer, Kenai Peninsula College will being going all out to celebrate opening the college’s first residence hall and new, state-of-the-art Career and Technical Education Center.

The public is invited to mark the calendar for Aug. 15 to enjoy the festivities that will include ribbon cuttings and tours of facilities, a free barbecue, live music and general celebration of the historic occasion.

The entire staff and faculty at KRC will contribute to the event. According to Eileen Reemtsma, KPC’s assistant to college director, it will take the entire workforce to support such a large event. Reemtsma has already coordinated two planning meetings in anticipation of many employees going off contract for the summer and returning just prior to the Aug. 15 event.

The ribbon cutting for the Career and Technical Education Center will be at 4 p.m., followed by the ceremony for the residence hall at 4:30 p.m. Tours of both facilities and the barbecue festivities will follow.

Last fall UAA contracted with the company ModernThink to survey current employees at all locations, including KPC’s campuses and extension sites, The purpose of the survey was to get employee feedback with the goal of using the data to build a better, more productive workplace. According to their website, ModernThink specializes in creating value for companies through their employees’ experiences. ModernThink believes that engaged employees are more dedicated, innovative and productive.

“The amount of data that ModernThink provides institutions is voluminous and consists of information broken down in almost every way imaginable. It is an overwhelming amount of useful material,” said KPC Director Gary J. Turner.

The KPC results are outstanding. All staff and faculty should be proud of the environment and culture they have created at KPC. We always knew we were pretty special and did great things, and this survey is a solid testament to that. KPC is the only UAA unit to score a high enough average to make the ‘ModernThink Honor Roll.’

KPC had the highest response rate of any UAA campus with 50 percent of surveys returned. This survey will serve as a tool for us to improve in areas that need some attention. While our ratings are outstanding, we need to use them to get even better,” said Turner.

Henry Haney, KRC assistant professor of process technology, has announced that he will be providing summer advising for students interested in planning for the process technology degree program.

Sessions will be held from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. on June 11, July 16 and July 30. For more information, contact Haney at 262-0341 or e-mail hwhaney@kpc.alaska.edu.
