Kenai River Campus faculty and staff military vets to be featured

KPC Director Gary Turner served in the U.S. Air Force from 1979 through 1994, retiring at the rank of captain. Turner, along with six other military veterans who work at the college, volunteered to be a part of U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski’s Veteran Spotlight feature.

Andrea Gusty, Alaska communications director for Senator Murkowski, visited the campus on Sept. 24 to interview and video KRC military veterans. This project is supported by the Library of Congress and its Veterans History Project. The videos, transcripts and biographies of those interviewed will be permanently housed at the Library of Congress and excerpts will be shown on the senator’s web site.

According to Murkowski’s website, the monthly Veteran’s Spotlight focuses on an Alaska veteran to honor and draw well- deserved attention to Alaska’s men and women who served.

In addition to Turner, Bill Howell, director of Student Services and adjunct faculty member (U.S. Navy retired commander; 1984-2004), Jane Fuerstenau, director of the library and associate professor of library science (U.S. Navy jet mechanic; 1983-1987), Dave Stang, facilities and maintenance supervisor (U.S. Navy machinists mate; 1982-1988), John Pollock, veteran services coordinator (U.S. Marines retired colonel; 1985-2010), Paul Perry, assistant professor of paramedic technology (U.S. Army medic; 1985-1988) and Henry Haney, assistant professor of process technology (U.S. Air Force electronics; 1968-1972).

While on campus, Gusty utilized the video equipment and studio to interview local veteran Herb Stettler. Stettler served in the U.S. Army in the Korean War and currently is chaplain and service officer for Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10046. Stettler has been a member of the VFW Honor Guard that annually posts the colors at KRC’s commencement ceremony.

Gusty has indicated that she will return to KRC to interview and film students that are military veterans.

The recently filmed video interviews are not yet edited and will be posted to Senator Murkowski’s website in the future. To view past Veteran Spotlight features, visit: http://www.murkowski.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?p=spotlight-veterans .

Campus generators on the ready for power outages

KRC experienced more lapses in electrical utility service last winter than usual due to severe weather. Although most outages were brief, causing only minor disruptions, a few outages were prolonged and required closing the campus.

Last summer, the main campus complex stand-by generator was replaced with a 350 kilowatt unit fueled with natural gas. The previous diesel-fueled unit could only power essential environmental services and emergency lighting.

The new Residence Hall and Career and Technical Education Center are each equipped with their own standby generators. It is anticipated that the campus can now continue operations through outages, avoiding inconveniences experienced in the past.

Student Forums give students their say

Each semester, the KPC Leadership Team comes together with students in the McLane commons to provide information, answer questions and address concerns. The aroma of pizza wafting through the halls gives students the signal and incentive to both participate and engage in the forum.

Forums will be held at 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday and at 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday. Past forums have provided updates about the many, ongoing campus construction and remodel projects, and fielded concerns regarding parking, smoking near entrances, tuition and fee rates and course offerings.
