River City Academy

River City Academy held the first Saturday School of this year on Nov. 2 and it was a resounding success. Students came from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., worked hard and focused on their math and technology standards. The next Saturday School will be on Nov. 16, and will focus on history and careers.

Last week’s early release provided the opportunity for teachers to use their extra time to focus on the migration to the new Alaska state standards on math and science which will be implemented next school year.

If parents need their Educate log in, please call the office at 714-8945. The school will offer an Educate training that will teach parents how to navigate through RCA’s grading system and see clearly where the student is at in all of their classes, what they’ve turned in and what they haven’t, and what they could be working on.

RCA is currently accepting applications for students in grades 7-12 who are interested in a different school experience. Students who demonstrate skills in being self-motivated, successful time managers and advocate on their own behalf are often an ideal fit for RCA. The performance-based model offers students choice in their education inside of a consistent standards-based curriculum. For more information, please call 714-8945.

During the event, topics such as the cost of attendance, the ways you can cut those costs (i.e. community college transfer, WUE, scholarship, etc.), various types of financial aid including grants, work study, loans, and the FAFSA will be discussed. Seniors and juniors are encouraged to attend and invite their parents. Refreshments from Subway will be provided.

Gymnastics is being offered to all fifth- and sixth-grade students and is beginning today. Participation forms went home two weeks ago and must be returned by today. The participation fee is $15 (checks payable to SoEl). Space is limited for this activity so please return the permission slips by today.

The next PTA meeting is Nov. 18, at 3:45 p.m. in the SoEl Library. Please join us there. Childcare will be provided. The PTA conducted our recent book fair, and it was a wonderful success. They set up the fair in the library, and everything looked lovely.

Don’t forget, this Friday is the ice cream/snack sale for our students at 2 p.m.

If you’ve been looking for another late salmon run, I think I’ve found it. Check out the walls at the intermediate end of the school.

Mrs. Baktuit’s class studied several Vincent Van Gogh paintings that included trees. They learned about drawing with perspective, and studied the types of trees on a field trip to the Wildlife Refuge. The students practiced blending colors using oil pastels to mix colors and adding white to lighten the hues. Great job, kids. Even Mr. V would be impressed.

Mrs. Straw, Mrs. Buben, and Ms. Smith each have classes participating in “The Pumpkin Book Project”, combining reading with creativity. Each student has received their pumpkin, yes, a real one, plus a project packet. They have to fill out a reading log, the character’s traits, story map, project blueprint, first draft, and a final draft with their best penmanship. The pumpkin will be turned into the character they selected from the book. Then the student has to present their project. I can’t list all the pumpkin characters here, but I have seen a moose, Big Nate, Fly Guy, Bing and Golly, Curious George, and Captain Underpants. They are wonderful representations.
