School board to meet

The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District Board of Education meets at 7 p.m. in the borough building at 148 N. Binkley Street in Soldotna (unless otherwise noted). Career and technical training for high school students

KPBSD Career and Tech Department is offering free after school academies to train students in the welding, construction and medical field. Listed below are an upcoming academies:

A summer construction academy will be taking place at the Workforce Development Center (located behind KCHS). Students will be constructing a greenhouse and a shed. Class days will be May 27-30 and June 1-4 from 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

Also offered this summer is an Emergency Trauma Technician (ETT) academy. Dates and locations to be announced. This course will cover all areas required to receive certification as an Emergency Medical Technician. The last week of class will be for review and the final exam. If you pass the exam you’ll receive your certification and an ETT patch.

Any high school student is able to participate in any of our academies. If a student successfully completes the 60 hour academy they will receive a ½ practical art credit.

Funding for the Alaska Construction Academies comes from a grant from the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development and The Alaska Department of Commerce and Economic Development.

Scholarships available

— The Soldotna Rotary club is offering several $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors from Cook Inlet Academy, Soldotna and Ninilchik High Schools as well as homeschool graduates. The Soldotna Rotary scholarships are based on the motto of “service above self.” Recipients will be picked based on community service performed during their high school careers. Applications are available at school counselor’s offices or the office of Foster Construction, 265 Wilson Ln. Applications must be received by April 13. GPA or parental financial information is not required. Submit applications and two letters of recommendation to: Soldotna Rotary Club Scholarships, P.O. Box 303 Soldotna, Alaska 99669.

— The Kenai Borough Employees Association scholarship committee is accepting applications for four scholarships of $500. The scholarships are available to all 2015 graduates of the Kenai Peninsula Borough including public, private and home-schooled graduates. Applications and instructions are available from any Kenai Peninsula Borough High School counselor’s office or on the borough’s website at www.borough.kenai.ak.us. Applications can be mailed or dropped off at the Kenai Peninsula Borough, KBEA Scholarship Committee, 144 North Binkley Street, Soldotna. Applications must be postmarked or delivered by March 27.

— The local chapter of the Interational Organization of Philanthropic Educational Opportunities, PEO, is looking for women who are returning to further their education and looking for scholarships for the 2015-16 school year. Applications are available at the financial aid office of Kenai Peninsula College’s Kenai River Campus. PEO’s purpose is to help women reach their goals to improve their lives and the lives of their families through education. The scholarships are offered for a wide range of students including high school graduates to masters and doctorate level education as well as grants and loans. If you are a woman returning after at least one year of college classes, you would be eligible to apply.

— Applications for the Cody Honrud Memorial Scholarship must be received at the Soldotna High School counselors office by April 15. The recipient must be graduating this 2014-2015 school year from Soldotna High School. The student must be accepted as a full-time student by either a business/trade school, apprenticeship program or vocational/technical school in 2015-2016 and carry at least a 2.0 gpa. Pick up an application today at the counselors’ office at Soldotna High School. The winner will be announced April 30.

— The Central Peninsula Hospital Auxiliary has released the application packets for its 2015 High School Senior Scholarships. There will be 2 scholarships awarded at $4,000 each. To be eligible, you must be a member of the Auxiliary, or a dependant of a CPH employee. You must be a senior in high school, and have at minimum a 2.5 GPA. You must also be majoring in a medical career. For more information or an application please come to the Central Peninsula Hospital Gift Shop or call Jim Childers at 907‐714‐4543. The deadline to submit an application is April 17.

Connections and Central Peninsula General Hospital are partnering together to offer the Safe Sitter class for homeschoolers. This is a two day class and will be offered March 30 and 31 from 9:00am to 3:30pm. Children need to be between the ages of 11 & 13 to attend. Homer Electric Association (HEA) is offering its 21st annual Electrical Safety Poster Contest for 3rd and 4th grade students. Contestants will receive a certificate of participation and have the opportunity to win some great prizes. The electrical safety posters will be judged on the following message:

The Connections Talent Show has become an event we look forward to each school year. We enjoy seeing the work & success our students are finding outside of the academic realm, and we love giving them a chance to put those talents on display each spring. Visit the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, and the Barren Islands with Rainbow Tours on May 14; depart at 7 a.m., return at 6 p.m. Located in the middle of Kennedy Entrance numerous species of wildlife call these islands home during our summer months and will be arriving starting the beginning of May. This is a great opportunity to view pelagic seabirds, whales and more during this over-100 mile round trip. Oceanography, geology, and marine biology will be discussed along the way. Cost is $150/person with a minimum of 15. This can be deducted from the student allotment if the student has a class on their ILP related to this activity. Parents are welcome but would need to pay out of pocket. This trip is open to High School Connections’ students and their parents with good sea legs. State testing will occur for all students in grades 3-6 on March 30-April 17. By requirement, we must test every enrolled child. Please be in attendance daily. Also, volunteers are welcome in the building except where students are testing for test security purposes provided by the state.

Kalifornsky Beach Elementary

After studying the digestive system and how to keep it healthy, Mr. Daniels’s class made models of the digestive system and their parts. We took the Science Standards Based Assessment on Tuesday, March 24. We are preparing for the new computerized Alaska Measures of Progress (AMP) tests the week of April 6. Parents, thank you for sending your child ready to go for state testing on these important dates.

Mr. Vedders’ class thanks Mr. Daniels’ class for helping them with our first mystery skype. We guessed where the other classroom was from (Texas) before they guessed Alaska! It was a fun and exciting time using our map skills and sharing about Alaska. Cadence asked their class, “What is it like living in such a small state?”

Friday, April 3, is a vacation day. There is no school for students.

Spring pictures are scheduled for Tuesday, April 7. Only students returning the picture order form will have their pictures taken.

Applications are available for the 2015-2016 Mountain View Pre-K Program.

Screenings for this program will be held on April 16. In order to be considered, a child must be 4 years old by September 1, 2015 and have a completed application returned to Mountain View Elementary. NNS offers Title 1 Pre-K classes to eligible children who will be 4 years old by September 1, 2015. Please contact the school to receive an application. Your screening appointment will be made when your application is received by the school. The purpose of the screening is to determine Kindergarten readiness. Screenings will take place on April 15th and all appointments must be made by April 14th. Please call the school office at 776-2600 if you need further information.

This week begins the AMP testing for all third graders. Testing will take place on Tuesday, March 31st and Wednesday, April 1st . Fourth graders will test on Tuesday, April 7th and Wednesday, April 8th and our fifth graders will have their testing on Tuesday, April 14th and Wednesday, April 15th. It is very important that each child get a good night of rest, eat a healthy breakfast and arrive at school on time.

Friday, April 3rd is a vacation day for all students and staff. School will resume on Monday, April 6th.

Congratulations to 4th grader Liam Quiner! Liam took part in the 60th Alaska State Science & Engineering Fair and earned a perfect score and a 1st place ribbon in the ‘Plant Science’ category.

Field trip season is just around the corner. All parent drivers, chaperones and classroom volunteers must be registered and approved by the school district. Please make sure that your current vehicle and driver information is on file in the school office. A new application must be submitted each school year. Please call the school office if you have any questions about this process. Please do not wait until the last minute to register. We ask that all paperwork and registrations be done at least two days prior to the day of the field trip.

Title One Pre-K applications for next fall are available in the school office. Students must be 4 years old on or before September 1st of 2015. Screenings will take place Tuesday. April 28th. If you have questions about this program please call Mrs. Oberts at 260-4317.

Pre-registration forms for next year have been sent home. Please make sure to send the completed form back to school as soon as possible. This is a good time to let us know if you will be having a new kindergartener starting in the fall.

Registration for next fall will take place March 31st – April 2nd, 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m., for students who do not currently attend Redoubt and currently live in the Redoubt attendance area. This registration will also include new kindergartners. Please bring in your child’s current immunization record, birth certificate and proof of your physical address. Yearbooks are on Sale — $15.00 pre-order yours now, make checks payable to Redoubt Elementary. Yearbooks will arrive in May. Only 175 yearbooks will be ordered, reserve yours today.

Redoubt’s 4th grade students will be selling ice cream each week to raise money for their upcoming field trip this spring to the Kenai Fjords. Ice cream prices will range from .75 cents to $2.00. Sales will take place after school in the hallway. April – Thursday, 4/2, Friday, 4/10, Friday, 4/17 & Friday, 4/24.

Redoubt’s 6th grade students will be visiting Skyview Middle School on May 8 from 10-11:15 a.m. in preparation for next fall!

Students will be transported by bus. All students must have a signed permission slip in order to attend this presentation. Additional information on this visitation will be sent home with students.

Fun Fest — April 10th 3:30-5:00 p.m. This will be our last Fun Fest for the school year. Cost is $4.00 per student. Snacks will be available to purchase at Fun Fest, so make sure to bring a little extra cash. All permission slips are due by noon the day of the Fun Fest. We would like to thank Jumpin’ Junction for their generous donation of their bounce house throughout the school year.

Each spring we provide parents the opportunity to provide input into the classroom placement of their child for the following school year. This input can be very helpful to the school staff when placing students into classes. So that your input may be considered during the placement process, this form must be returned to the school office no later than Friday, April 17, at 4:00 p.m. Forms returned after that date will not able to be considered in the placement process. Forms are available at the school and at our school website.

River City Academy

The week of March 30th through April 2nd will be Debate week in ELA classes. Monday, students will choose and be assigned to topics, Tuesday and Wednesday students will prepare in teams, and Thursday will be debate day. The public is invited. Students will be debating during or near their scheduled ELA class.

New Student Shadow Day is planned for April 7, from 7:40-11:50. New students planning to attend RCA next school year are invited to come spend the morning with us, shadowing current students and getting a general feel of our school atmosphere. Please call the school if you have any questions.

Congratulations to Hannah Delker for being chosen as the Skyview Middle School Masonic Student of the Year! Hannah demonstrates outstanding qualities in 5 areas: Character, Academic Achievement, Extra Curricular Activities, Leadership, and Volunteer work. She was selected from a group of six finalists: Darby McMillian, Aliann Schmidt, Danica Schmidt, Haley Buckbee, and Kortney Birch. Hannah will be recognized at the Masonic Lodge Outstanding Student Awards Ceremony on Friday, May 1 at the Kenai Central High School Auditorium.

Congratulations to staff member Shannon Dwyer. She was chosen as a BP Teacher of Excellence! We appreciate all she does for the students and staff at Skyview Middle School. Thank you Ms. Dwyer!

Sadie Fox received 1st place in the Oosik Classic Women’s 25 K on Saturday and Levi Michael received 2nd place in the Men’s 25 K. Great showing for our Stars!

Soldotna High students volunteered on March 21 for the Kenai Peninsula Food Bank’s fundraiser. This was called the Clash of the Culinary Kings. Local chefs competed in a “Chopped” “Iron Chef” type of competition. Some of our students volunteered for almost 8 hours straight. They helped the chefs, did the event set up and cleanup, preppy food, bussed tables, washed dishes, and served food. They worked very hard! This was a great event to be a part of.

The National Honor Society will be hosting auditions for the annual Talent Show. The show will be on Thursday, April 2nd at 6:00 p.m. in the SoHi Auditorium cost is $2. The show will include performing arts in the auditorium as well as the visual arts, which will be on display. Get your acts together along with your talent and your talented friends. In order to participate, you must fill out and sign a registration form as well as attend the mandatory audition & dress rehearsal, which will be Tuesday, March 31 at 2:30 p.m.. Art students wishing to enter art pieces need to fill out the forms & category and give it to either Ms. Taylor or Ms. Cox along you’re your art piece. You may get the audition forms from Mrs. Raemaeker (room 88) or at the office. These forms must be turned in either to the office or Mrs. Raemaeker by Tuesday, March 31 at noon. It is a great night of music, vocals, dance, theatrical pieces and art displays.

The Media Center is open until 5pm Monday-Friday. There are buses at 4:15 for those students working in the Media Center. If your student were to stay after school and would need a bus home at 4:15 please contact Tamra Wear at 260-7036 or twear@kpbsd.k12.ak.us to give her the bus drop off location for your student.

Cinderella’s Closet is open March 31 from 2:30-5:30 in the theater dressing rooms at Soldotna High School. This program helps local ladies in need with free prom dresses, shoes, and accessories. Donations welcome.

The Study

The Study is excited to introduce academic pre-k/kindergarten and first/second grade in the 2015/16 school year! It’s not too early to begin enrolling, so call us to reserve your little ones a spot!
