There is a saying that everyone has heard that goes, “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover.” I am going to take a leaf out of Candace Flynn’s book (a teenage girl from the animated TV show Phineas and Ferb) and say, “That’s why books have covers; to judge them!” If you pick up a book and the cover is a picture of a couple holding hands, with pink, curly writing across their feet proclaiming Summer Love, you are going to assume that it is a romance novel. You can also safely assume that is isn’t about the zombie apocalypse.

Time running out to finish GED testing

The Kenai River Campus Learning Center has been very busy these days assisting members of the public who are finishing up the current incarnation of the GED test.

“We’ve really seen a lot of people coming in to finish,” said Diane Taylor, Learning Center programs manager.

Every school day elementary students across the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District shimmy on snow pants, glide on gloves and put on hats to brave the elements during recesses.

Be it snow, sleet or below zero temperatures, students go out to play. While many often come prepared, sometimes students are missing a glove or hat— which makes outside pay nearly impossible in the cold.

Piles of copper, silver and bills were spread out across two counters in Sheilah-Margaret Pothast’s classroom Tuesday at Soldotna Middle School. As the contents of two five-gallon water jugs were counted, excitement grew for five middle school students.

The coins and bills were collected over a one-week period at SMS as a part of the Spartan Student Council Penny Drive to benefit the victims of Typhoon Haiyan, a powerful tropical cyclone that devastated the Philippines in early November. It is the deadliest Philippine on record killing at least 5,500 people.
