For those who love to not only eat but cook Asian cuisine there is a new market with everything you need to prepare or learn how to prepare you favorite Asian dishes. The locally owned Bayan Asian Market recently opened in the AK Maxi Storage mall on the Kenai Spur Highway in Soldotna. Teresita Nunag after living in Alaska for eighteen years decided to open an Asian market to offer the community foods and seasonings she remembers from her childhood in the Philippines. “We opened July 1st and have been adding things daily. We have a wide variety of Asian products from special seasonings to shampoos from the Philippines and special juices from Thailand, Japan and specialty items from other Asian countries and lots of fresh frozen fish from Asia of all different kinds for when you want to serve something special other than your salmon or halibut. We also have organic and black rice, jasmine rice and sweet rice that is very popular in five, twenty five and fifty pound bags,” Nunag told the Dispatch.
With the coming of Alaska’s long winter nights Teresita says she will gladly help anyone who wants to try some new recipes or learn the secrets of preparing successful Asian dishes, “Just stop by or call me and we’ll have fun making you happy with what you are cooking whether you shop here or not I’m always happy to share my favorite recipes and those of my parents and grandparents with folks who come by. My niece May Nunag manages the store when I’m not here and she is also very good with Asian cooking and we have a frozen section with things that are easy for anyone to prepare and very delicious and of course lots of healthy Asian snack foods that are popular and that kids love to have in their lunches,” said Teresita.
According to Nunag the most popular item at the new Bayan Asian Market is the ready to cook steamed Pork SioPao, “It’s sort of like a barbeque inside of a bun and very delicious and easy to prepare and we also sell a lot of Lumpia wrappers for making your own wraps at home,” she said.
The Bayan Asian Market is open seven days a week Monday through Saturday 9:00am – 6:00pm and Sunday from 11:00am – 6:00pm for more information call Teresita or May at 260-3327.
