Call to Artists for Central Peninsula’s 1st mural project... “Paint the Kenai!”

The Kenai Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center have teamed up with the Soldotna Rotary Club for an exciting community project that will culminate in a large mural similar to those popular in Seward, Anchorage and other Alaskan locations. “This is entirely a community based project with lots of opportunities for local artists and business owners and residents,” explained Soldotna Rotary Club president Marcus Mueller at a Kenai Chamber meeting. “The Call to Artists has now gone out from the Kenai Visitors Center which invites local artists of any age to get a registration form that includes all the guidelines for submitting a mural idea. Artists will have until April of next year to complete their 24”X 48” flat board tile that will translate well into a large 12’X24’ mural on the theme of Community Identity,” said Mueller.

According to Mueller all “Paint the Kenai” tile entries will be exhibited as next year’s summer art show at the Kenai Visitors and Cultural Center for the summer of 2013 and will be voted on by residents of the Kenai Peninsula in a three-phased voting process that will include the top 20 mural sketches in addition to the winning mural idea. The top 20 will be auctioned off at a fundraising event for the project on Saturday, September 7th, 2013. While the “Paint the Kenai” project is for the completion of one mural, the other ideas submitted will be promoted and available for other mural projects in the community. The artist of the winning entry will be awarded $1,500 cash prize and work closely with James Adcox, project manager to reproduce the image onto the permanent large mural at the selected location. “We are excited to see what local artists will portrait as their idea or vision might be of our community identity and when I say our community I mean Paint the Kenai in its broadest sense of the artist wants to interpret our community,” said Mueller. The Soldotna Rotary Club will be asking for submissions of possible locations for the mural which will also be determined by a community vote. The cost for the project is estimated to be $18,000 and Mueller says there will be opportunities for corporate sponsors in the future as well as for individuals and volunteers to participate in the construction of the Paint the Kenai mural.
