Realtor Awards ceremony and Board installation celebrates service

Counting down the final days of 2012 is a good time to appreciate those who have served our community during the last year and make plans for the coming one.  The Kenai Peninsula Association of Realtors (KPAR) recently held their annual awards night at the Soldotna Senior Center for just such an occasion.  While realtors are mainly identified with “For Sale” signs, associations like KPAR do a whole lot more according to Melissa Duffy KPAR chief executive officer, “Our goal is to help strengthen and support the community, one event at a time. During the spring KPAR hosts a raffle to benefit Habitat for Humanity and Hospice of the Central Peninsula. This event has changed forms through the years, but the Realtors dedication to these wonderful organizations has never wavered and plans for the 2013 raffle are underway. To help support this event, the Association welcomes donations from local businesses and sells raffle tickets at the Home Show in April, and the Sport, Rec and Trade Show in May. 

KPAR also hosts the annual Kenai Peninsula Sport, Rec and Trade Show. The Show was purchased a few years ago as a means to cover operational expenses for the Association, which in turn allows us to focus efforts on raising money to help others. It has been a welcome opportunity for our Association Affiliates to provide a weekend long event for the community to attend and enjoy. We have many volunteers that help with the show and it truly is wonderful to watch them come together for this event,” said Duffy in a Dispatch interview.

At their award ceremony and board installation last week KPAR raised funds that will be split between the Dave Feeken Scholarship Fund, helping to further REALTOR® education, and the KPAR® Hardship Fund, aimed to help community members in need.  “We were also able to collect 42 toys that were donated to Toys for Tots. In 2013 we are hoping to continue our path of support for the community. Remember, the members of the KPAR are here to help you with all your real estate needs. But we’re also here to help make the Kenai Peninsula a great place to live as well. It is that collaborative spirit and common goal that helps make our Association such a success,” added Duffy.

The event recognized the 2012 Board of Directors and Committee Chairs for their generous time and support throughout the year. KPAR selected two realtors to receive the Affiliate of the Year award this year honoring Sharon Dallmann of First American Title and Julie Murchison also of First American Title for their years of hard work and dedication. KPAR president Dale Bagley commented that while traditionally people enter the real estate profession as a second career he feels opportunities are available for young people on the Peninsula, “Anyone interested should talk with a realtor to find out specifics about the business.  It’s tough getting started and takes time to build a business but the local market was good last year and should be better in the coming year.  KPAR is also active in going to Juneau and working with our national affiliates to protect property rights and the ability for all to achieve the American dream of home ownership,” said Bagley.

According to Duffy Mary Kay Grenier was the lucky raffle winner, “Our sponsors for the raffle were Michael Smith, Wells Fargo Home Mortgage and Aaron Swanson, Residential Mortgage.
