It was a busy holiday season for Jenna Hansen and “Scene of the Crash” her friendly reindeer. As 2012 was getting underway Hansen a Nikiski freshman and 4-H member most of her life applied through UAF to raise a reindeer for her 4-H project. “I was hoping all along not to sell him at the Jr. Market Livestock Auction and would be able to gentle him for public appearances. He was pretty skittish in the beginning, but we bonded and h grew up to be a real gentle animal who likes being around people,” she said. Crash and Jenna have helped the community by donating appearances through out November and December to non-profit organizations raising funds during the holiday season. Jenna and Crash will continue in the new year to work with local schools and Boys and Girls clubs as part of an ongoing educational program. “It’s been a lot of fun being out in the public with Crash, he’s made a lot of family photo albums and facebook pages this holiday season. I look forward to the new year and continuing to give back to the community through 4-H education programs and no he didn’t come with flying instructions and that’s how he got his name,” said a smiling Jenna.
Santa and Crash were not the only ones making public holiday appearances and bring smiles to peoples faces. For two decades Becky Dwinell (known affectionately as Miss Becky) and her pre-school through 4th graders at Cook Inlet Academy (CIA) have taken an afternoon to go caroling in the community, “We have been doing Christmas caroling for about 20 years. I love taking the children around to different places in the Soldotna area. I really appreciate the parents and the time that they take out of their busy schedule to help us with this awesome trip. A special thank you to Soldotna Senior Center, Beemuns and Fred Meyer for letting us come to their place of business. The kids this year were all really excited about singing and of course a day getting out of school,” said Miss Becky. When asked why they liked to go Christmas caroling 7-year-old Jeremiah said, “Going out to sing to people,” others commented, Singing, its Christmas fun, meeting other people, singing about the baby Jesus and seeing people smile. “I would also like to say a huge thank you to the teachers for helping out with Christmas caroling every year. Merry Christmas everyone!” said Miss Becky.
