After 50 some years of food service at a variety of restaurants Bobbi Stelljes is now the owner of the Fine Thyme Café in the River City Book Store at the “Y” in Soldotna. “It’s a wonderful adventure I feel like I’m being rewarded for all the years of effort I’ve put into the food service business and loving it,” Bobbi told the Dispatch in an interview. Stelljes says the menu will stay the same as will the friendly quality service, “The food is excellent and our customers love the friendly service so the only thing that will change will be our daily specials with a different special every day on our special board,” she said. Bobbi says the most popular is the meat loaf sandwich, “And we have the best Rueben in Alaska, when folks see it for the first time their eyebrows may go up, but they come right back down with the first bite. Our soups are hearty and heart warming on cold days and to accompany your winter Hawaiian fantasies we have a great Kona Chicken sandwich featuring lime marinated chicken with coconut milk and fresh pineapple and avocado in a mango mustard sauce. We make it all right here and from the freshest of ingredients,” said Bobbi
The atmosphere of the Fine Thyme Café is unique located within the Riverside Book Store where you are surrounded with real books that stimulate imagination and conservation. “We love our clientele, they are wonderful everyone seems to know each other when they come here and that makes for a comradery and family atmosphere that we truly love,” she said. Here’s what other people have said about the Fine Thyme Café and posted on their website: “This place is very relaxing. Tiny place right next to a book store. It serves some yummy soups and quiches. Along with great sandwiches. I always find myself staring at all the books when I come here. I enjoy reading one of their many books while waiting for my meal. It's a warm and relaxing atmosphere for just yourself or with a friend. The price is decent and the people who work there are friendly and helpful if you have questions about anything on the menu.” “This cafe is inside River City Books, the kind of bookstore that you used to find everywhere but is now a rarity in the big box / Amazon / e-book era. There's a nice selection of quiches, salads, and sandwiches in a very relaxing atmosphere, with friendly people and good service. I met the owner and some of the staff on a boat ride to Halibut Cove, the day before we were scheduled to drive through Soldotna; otherwise I would never have noticed this place. They are clearly oriented toward local regulars, but it's a great little oasis for the weary traveler. Highly recommended.”
Why buy a business at a time when others think of retiring? “I love this place and the people and besides I never thought I’d get this old and I still feel like I’m in my twenties,” laughed Bobbi. Stelljes has been joined by her sister Jerri Scott from Utah who will be helping Bobbi with her new business, so stop in and welcome Jerri to Alaska, congratulate Bobbi and treat yourself to at “Fine Thyme!” The Fine Thyme Café is open daily 9:00am – 5:00pm Monday – Saturday and Sunday 11:00am – 4:00pm.
