Instead of pounding nails and pouring concrete last week members of the Kenai Peninsula Builders Assoc. (KPBA) were pounding golf balls and pouring barbeque sauce on their ribs at the 3rd Annual Golfing for Scholarships Tournament at Bird Homestead Golf Course. “Great builders are not necessarily great golfers, but we sure had a great time here today and a fantastic turn out from the community for a great cause.  Our fundraising usually focuses on our scholarships; last year we awarded four scholarships to Kenai Peninsula grads who each are attending AVTEC to pursue careers in the building related fields.  But additionally this year This year, a special fundraiser was held for the KPBA “Bench Project” which is an outdoor wooden bench being built in memory and honor of David Douthit and Spencer Jay Reeder, two local Alaskan soldiers who lost their lives while serving our country in the United States Army. A memorial plaque will also be included in honor of these two young men and the sacrifices they made for our freedom. The funds collected at the tournament will be used for materials. The bench is being constructed by Stix Jenkins at Stix’s Woodworks. We’d like to thank Stix for donating his talents toward our efforts, and to everyone who supported our project,” said KPBA past president Jeff Twait.

The tournament was co-sponsored by Wells Fargo and according to Tyler Davis of Wells Fargo it’s all about supporting the next generation, “We’re committed to the youth of our community and want to support them in education toward a career path that’s going to come back to our community,” said Davis. KPBA scholarships are focused on helping students wanting to pursue a career in the trades explained Twait, “A student is eligible to apply if they plan on going into a builder related field and continue their education in Alaska.  Applications are available through school counselors or by going to our KPBA website,” said Twait.

Winning teams and cash prizes went to: First Place and $500 Cash to “Eddie’s Team” Eddie Silboro, Theresa Silboro, and Pedro McCall. Second Place and winner of $300 Cash “Slash E Construction” Roy Bird, Trevor Baldwin, Ardie Crawford, and Scott Sundberg. Kevin walked away with a lovely box of wine and a set of ‘red neck’ wine glasses. “The competition for this award was really keen!  We had to play really terrible to come in last,” said Hanson.  According to Cindy Rombach, KPBA executive officer plans are already in the works for the 2014 Tournament – Scheduled to be held Saturday, August 2 at Bird Homestead Golf Course
