Alaska’s largest amateur sporting event was held in Anchorage last month and five local weight lifters and body builders who train at The Fitness Place brought home medals from Alaska Fitness Expo #4 & Crystal Cup competition. James Slone put up the heaviest bench press at 369 pounds and weighed in for the lift at 212 pounds. Zach Hallford took 1st Place in the teen division and 4th in Middleweight in his first competition. Coming home with the esteemed Crystal Cup in the women’s division was Sarah Jo Theis, who took 1st in Overall Women’s Physique and 2nd in Women’s Bodybuilding. “I’ve come to completely enjoy competing,” said Sarah Jo. “This was my fifth show and I was happy to do so well. It’s just wonderful, takes a lot of discipline and hard work, but the feeling that comes from winning is truly inspirational and makes all the effort pay off,” she said.
Danny Autrey, who also trains at The Fitness Place, took 2nd in the Men’s Heavyweight Strongman competition. “We scored points in each of four events and I was able to score second highest. I’ve been training in weight lifting for about five years and for Strongman off and on for about three. This was my third Strongman competition and I’m improving each time out. I hope to qualify for national competition and go down to Las Vegas to see how an Alaskan stacks up against the rest of the nation,” said Autrey.
Seth Short of Soldotna also came home with a silver medal for taking 2nd in the CrossFit competition in the Men Over 40 category at the Alaska Fitness Expo #4 and Crystal Cup.
